"Lord Horus, I have some questions about this."
Patting the shoulder of Torgaddon, who didn't dare to speak rashly, Fourth Company Captain Garviel Loken stepped forward to object.
He was not a member of the Mournival.
At least, not yet.
"Oh?"
Seeing this, Horus was also quite surprised.
In his memory, this taciturn captain rarely disagreed with him, let alone on a matter as obvious as an inexperienced commander like Kasjia being unskilled in combat.
"Fourth Captain, are you trying to say that perhaps because Kasjia participated in command on his homeworld, he might actually be able to command a battle?"
"No, Loken. A real interstellar-scale battle is far more perilous than the squabbles on our homeworlds."
"When I was just a street tough on Cthonia, in my understanding, a battle was just a fight between two gangs," Horus said with a smile, as if reminiscing about the past. "At that time, whoever had the bigger guns, whoever had more and braver men, would win."
But war, especially interstellar war, was a completely different concept.
It required being tempered by blood and fire.
Forged again and again in endless slaughter, and learning from experience under the roar of cannons.
In this world, there has never been a War Master who could be made overnight.
He made a pun at the end, showing a little bit of his sense of humor.
"You are right, Lord Horus."
Loken nodded in agreement.
"But I still believe that Kasjia is far more profound than we expect."
"Interesting, Loken. And how did you come to this conclusion?"
"A premonition."
He nodded slightly.
"This is the place."
"All auxiliary troops and members of the First and Second Companies of the Emperor's Children, with me on the Stormbird to the Silent Star, to survey the surface geology and construct defensive fortifications," Kasjia commanded, looking at the planet wrapped in layers of poison clouds outside the window.
The stargate they were guarding was located at the pole of a planet called the Silent Star.
The Silent Star, a planet composed of shattered crystal deposits, its surface covered with a very thick layer of acidic poison fog.
With such a harsh environment, coupled with the lack of mineral resources, this planet was deemed an uninhabitable, worthless planet upon the arrival of the expeditionary fleet.
Apart from the Tech-Priests at the pole who were constantly studying the mechanical structure of the gate, no one, no creature, would visit this place.
But Kasjia still insisted on designing a total of three defensive lines, inner and outer, according to the legion's highest standard for an enemy attack.
Who was he defending against?
"The planet's surface geology is extremely hard crystal."
"Coupled with the large amount of toxic gas interference in the atmosphere, the difficulty of our defensive construction will increase sharply."
"Furthermore, we also lack the necessity to build large-scale defensive facilities. If we forcibly order the construction, many of the Terran veterans are very likely to be dissatisfied."
"Many veterans have already reported to me, hoping to lower the level of the defensive facilities and just build light defensive barriers," proposed Saul Tarvitz, a new recruit under Kasjia's tactical squad and also a fellow student under Sword Saint Arcur.
"Sergeant Tarvitz, your proposal is reasonable."
He nodded in agreement.
The biggest problem Kasjia was currently facing was these arrogant Terran veterans of the Third Legion.
In the early days of the Great Crusade, the recruits of the Third Legion all came from the ancient noble families on Terra.
While this ensured the quality of the recruits to a certain extent, it also brought great management difficulties.
These lords from Terra were, well, lords.
It was one thing if the Primarch Fulgrim herself was commanding, but how could these battle-hardened veterans tolerate a newcomer with no prestige like Kasjia commanding them in battle?
Not to mention he was an outsider from a backwater like Chemos.
It was more or less a foregone conclusion that they would feign compliance with his orders.
"But I have my own way of dealing with this," Kasjia said, comforting him with a smile.
"What is this kid up to now...?"
First Company Captain of the Emperor's Children, Julius Kaesoron, sneered at Kasjia's orders.
As a member of the Emperor's Children, one of the two hundred surviving veterans, he was not unskilled at building defensive fortifications.
In fact, every Space Marine of the Emperor's Children could change their tactical style according to the needs of the battlefield.
From masters of close combat, to perfect designers of defensive fortifications, to oversaturated fire from ranged weapons, the Emperor's Children could achieve it all on command.
But the premise was that the command came from a normal commander!
"Those Mechanicum priests all said that no creature has passed through this gate for countless years!"
"On what grounds does this armchair general have to spend huge resources to build a top-tier heavy fortress?"
The probability of xenos appearing here was smaller than the probability of the Warmaster betraying the Emperor!
The fact that Kasjia had caused the Third Legion to be stuck in the rear, preventing him from going to the front lines to fight, was enough to make his blood boil.
What was even more infuriating was that he had to mix concrete in the rear!
And it was unnecessary concrete!
Even if they went to all the trouble to build it, there would be no credit or reward!
Kaesoron was very angry.
He was feeling hard as steel, inside and out.
"Then, Captain, should we follow Lord Kasjia's instructions or not?"
The few veterans beside him looked at each other.
Those in the First Company were all battle-hardened, elite Terran veterans.
Compared to the fledgling Kasjia, they were more willing to trust the orders of First Captain Kaesoron.
Although he was just a sword-obsessed idiot who didn't know how to command, he was still more trustworthy than a nepotism case like Kasjia.
"Just build the basic fortifications and outposts."
"It's our misfortune to be stuck with such a grandiose and incompetent fool," Kaesoron pouted with dissatisfaction.
"Exactly! It pisses me off. Every time I see that sword of his, I get so envious."
"Why does a new recruit get to use such a good power sword!?"
"Sigh, it can't be helped. This is the fate of us poor folks."
Every time they saw this guy, a new recruit, wearing such exquisite weapons and armor...
...they were so envious!
Although they were all nobles.
It seemed some nobles were more noble than others.
"The First Captain seems to be somewhat dissatisfied with your orders."
Sword Saint Arcur Tona stood beside Kasjia, looking at the difference in the construction progress below.
As Fulgrim's Eldest Daughter, she was acting as Kasjia's bodyguard and guard in this operation.
Of course, you could also use a nicer, more Warhammer-style name—Kasjia's Champion.
"Do you need me to step in and remind them?"
Arcur's eyes narrowed slightly.
That guy, First Captain Kaesoron, was also her student.
For him to be so arrogant and disobedient now... perhaps it was time to teach him a lesson.
"No need."
"He'll know he was wrong when the xenos army actually comes through the gate and starts bombarding us."
"Are you so confident that there will be a xenos invasion?"
Arcur was a little surprised.
"Where does this confidence come from?"
Of course, it's because I've read the script.
Haha, what else?
"Because I am a Son of the Emperor."
"Even if there is only a tiny possibility of failure, it must be meticulously eliminated to achieve perfection."
"Not to be proud because of one's noble status, not to be slack because of a certain victory."
"This is the virtue that a Son of the Emperor should possess."
Kasjia had a thick skin.
He said this with righteous indignation.
