Chapter 46 - Chapter 46 Final Preparations

The impact of that single goal was felt throughout the final week of preseason. The training pitch, once divided by unspoken ranks, now felt like home to a united team. The line that had kept the younger boys separate from the established U16s had disappeared, erased by a moment of shared victory.

The older players, who had once viewed the trio with doubt, now treated them as equals. Jake, the captain, sought out Mason to discuss defensive strategies. Their rivalry had cooled into a strong midfield partnership based on respect. He began passing to Ethan in tight spots, trusting his new teammate to handle the pressure.

The last training session before the season opener was sharp and focused. The ball moved with a speed and purpose that had been missing just weeks earlier. It was clear to everyone that the tough competition of pre-season had created a stronger, more dynamic squad.

On the morning of the first league match, the players gathered in the changing room. The atmosphere was calm yet charged with anticipation. Coach Shaw stood before them, his serious expression unmistakable. "Pre-season is over," he said, his voice breaking the silence. "The work is done. The debates are finished. This is the team I believe gives us the best chance to win today and to challenge for the title this season."

He picked up the whiteboard and revealed the starting lineup.

At the back were the familiar, experienced U16 defenders. In the midfield was a powerful trio: Jake, the captain, in a holding role, with Mason beside him as the tireless engine. Just ahead of them, in the number ten position, was Ethan Matthews. Leading the attack was Callum Reid.

They had all made it.

They walked onto the Crestwood pitch not as a group of older players and talented newcomers, but as a single, cohesive unit. From the first whistle, their chemistry was clear. The team played with a mix of the U16s' strength and the creative flair of the U14 champions.

In the 25th minute, the combination forged in the preseason shone through. Jake won a high header, directing it down to Mason. Mason took one touch before passing to Ethan in open space. Ethan turned, charged at the defense, and slid a perfectly timed pass to Callum, who coolly finished, his confidence restored.

Crestwood dominated the rest of the game, adding a second goal in the second half for a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Back in the changing room, the joyful atmosphere reflected unity. Coach Shaw gave the team a rare, satisfied smile. "That," he said, "is the standard. Well done."

As the team celebrated, Jake approached Mason and Ethan. He clapped Mason on the shoulder. "We didn't give them an inch out there," he said, acknowledging their midfield control. He then looked at Ethan. "Good game. You make us look dangerous."

Ethan sat on the bench, unwrapping tape from his ankles, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction. He remembered that first tough day of preseason, the intimidation, the physicality, and the doubt. The struggle to earn his place had been one of the hardest challenges of his life. But now, as a starter on a winning U16 team, surrounded by teammates who trusted and respected him, he knew the battle had been worth it. The fight for a spot was over. The fight for a new title had just begun.
