Chapter 45 - Chapter 45 U16 Friendly Debut

Stepping onto the pitch, Ethan felt a rush of adrenaline that pushed aside all the preseason fatigue. The game was tied, a tactical deadlock waiting to be broken. He and Callum quickly brought new energy to the match. While the play had been cautious and structured, Ethan demanded the ball in tight spaces, looking to turn and face the goal. Callum, energized by Ethan's presence, made smart and persistent runs that started to break apart the organized defense.

The older players noticed the change right away. After Ethan executed a quick one-two with the left winger that almost broke through the defense, he caught the captain, Jake, giving him an approving nod. The seasoned players began to trust the newcomers, passing them the ball and anticipating their movements. The rhythm of Crestwood's attack had shifted completely.

The breakthrough came in the 70th minute, thanks to the chemistry that had built up over years of playing together. It started with Mason, who threw himself into a solid but well-timed tackle to win the ball just inside his own half. He immediately passed it to Ethan.

Ethan took one touch to gain control and another to push it forward into space. He looked up and saw it—a run Callum had made countless times, a quick movement between the two center-backs. Without hesitation, Ethan sent a perfectly weighted through ball into his path, bypassing the entire midfield and defense.

Callum was through, one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The frustration of his pre-season goal drought seemed to vanish in that moment. With a calm, polished finish, he slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The relief and joy exploded. Callum let out a roar and pointed right at Ethan, who was already sprinting over to celebrate with him. Mason was the first to join them, patting them both on the back, the trio united in their moment of triumph. The rest of the team, including Jake, crowded around them, genuinely celebrating a goal that had been earned together.

With a 1-0 lead, Crestwood held on for the rest of the match. Ethan showed his maturity, helping to control the pace and retain possession, frustrating the opposition until the final whistle blew.

In the changing room, the victory felt important. It was more than just a pre-season friendly. Coach Shaw stood in front of the team, his expression as serious as ever. "In the first half, we were solid. In the second half, we were dangerous," he said, his gaze fixed on Ethan and Callum. "You two were brought on to make a difference. You did. That's what I expect. Well done."

It wasn't excessive praise, but from Coach Shaw, it was a strong endorsement.

As the team packed their bags, the invisible barrier between the U15s and the older U16s seemed to disappear. They were one team now. Ethan sat with Callum and Mason, a quiet understanding shared among them. The fight for a starting spot was far from over, but they had just taken their first, decisive shot. They had shown the coach, their teammates, and themselves that they not only wanted a place on this team. They deserved it.
