Chapter 1 - Wish I Could Be

"XANIA EMERSON!!! WHERE ARE MY CLOTHES." Taia screamed at me as she threw her long black t-shirt in my face.

"I'll get it done, there's no need to bring the roof down." I said with as much patience as I could muster. I was exhausted for the day and I just wanted to curl up and sleep in bed.

I had come home to find my stepsisters throwing all their clothes all over their room as they were frantic to find something to wear to impress their potential mates.

"Don't just stand there! Help us!" Mila yelled.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked still clueless about what they needed from me.

"Don't waste your breath Mila, she's hopeless and a pathetic Omega, the working class these days are just getting worse and worse. Most of them simply brainless." Taia sneered as she pointed at me.

"I don't know what you're looking for or the occasion. If I did I could help." I replied calmly.

"You haven't heard the news?" Mila asked looking genuinely surprised.

"What news?" I asked.

"The Alphas will be attending the grand ball along with the royal family. It's a great honour as this time, the king is hoping to select a bride for his son, who is eligible enough to tke his place."

"Everyone is to attend to witness the grand event. Including Omegas." Taia added pointedly looking disgusted.

"So I don't have to go?" I asked curiously. I wasn't all hyped to go. I had a lot of work to do like school work, if I wanted to keep my good grades up and keep my scholarship.

"You're not worthy to go anyways," Taia remarked with a shrug of your shoulders.

"You must go," Mila said slowly.

"Everyone has to attend. It will be fun, we get to dress up and....."

"But i don't have a mate to go with," I interrupted her.

"All the more reason to go." Mila said smugly.

"I'm too tired to go shopping the ball is in less than five hours away." Mila added annoyed with the situation at hand.

"I agree," we will have to make do with what we have.

"I think I will wear my gold sequin dress," Taia said finally.

"I'll match you wearing silver," Mila added gleefully.

"You can were the dark pink dress, if you want Xania," Mila said as she turned to me.

"We're about the same size." She stated with finality.

I didn't like that tone, Mila may be the nicer

stepsister but she was definitely the bossy one.

"Okay, boss lady, since I am obligated to accompany you, I shall. If I can finish clearing this mess up in time." I replied doubtful, surveying the tornado that had hit the room and left.

"Don't bother if you can't, we may need you more there than here," Taia said briskly.

"Very well," I said softly as I got to work arranging and folding all their clothes and hanging up their dresses in the closet.

It took a total of three hours before I finally finished while my stepsisters were busy giving each other a full spa treatment.

Once they were dressed and ready with their make up on. Mila turned to me and said, "go get ready now, before we get late."

"Brian will be picking all of us up in his car," Taia announced.

I cringed inwardly, Brian was such an ass, then again he and Taia seemed to get along well like milk and honey so who was I to judge.

I went up to my own room which was located on the highest floor of our house. It was a cute little bedroom tucked away in the corner and no it was not the attic.

I showered, sprayed on deodorant and perfume. Brushed my long black hair till it shorn. Applied on some light make up and begrudgingly slipped on Mila's pink sequined dress. I took a look at myself in the mirror and I was a little taken aback. I guess the dress looked nice even on me, it complemented my skin tone. My green eyes seemed to sparkle and stand out even more.

"Okay, Xania, let's do this and get it done with,"

I whispered to myself as I left my bedroom.

My stepsisters were Betas in our society's rank. Betas were a level above Omegas and in most cases they were considered the upper class of society, next in command after Alphas.

My mother had married their father and voila here we are now.

I lost her after that, she died in an accident along with my stepdad.

Since that day, all I ever did was throw myself into more work to keep the grief of losing her at bay. I never found out who my father was.

A tear slipped down my eye as I thought of her she would have wanted me to attend this event too.

"Xania, hurry up we're going to be late," yelled Taia from down below.

I hurriedly took their stairs down and made such a noise doing so till I reached the hall where Brian and Travis were waiting.

Brian and Travis were both six foot one with muscular builds. Both were Betas and came from influential families.

Travis gave me an easy smile and said "hey."

Brian looked at me and with a smugly smile asked "what's new dork?"

I rolled my eyes at him and smiled at Travis.

We got into the big black SUV and pulled out of the driveway.

"This is going to be interesting," Travis whispered to Mila.

"It sure is for the first time we get to see royalty up close."

I did my best not to roll my eyes for the second time today.

Maybe the food served will be good, I thought hopefully. What's a ball without refreshments.
