I had the perfect life, the perfect family, until it came along. The Advent Of The Gates. Long before I was born, this phenomenon descended upon our world in the form of gates, and this gates contained creatures with unfathomable strength — Soul-Beasts. They consumed human souls, and the more souls they consumed, the more powerful they became. Eventually, our world was almost overrun, but these creatures weren't the only thing the Advent Of The Gates brought along. Along with these beasts, humanity gained the power of talents and we took back our world. Years later, I could never have guessed that my life will change for the worse, and in this world where an individual's talent was everything, while others awakened talents beyond comprehension, I awakened nothing and was mocked, abandoned. However, moments before my death, I came to discover that fate had other plans for me, and I awakened something no human should have ever been able to. Chapter 1 - Kazuki Matasuragi

"Kazuki!"

A loud voice cut through the quiet of the school infirmary as the doors burst open. A man stumbled in with his eyes wide with worry, sweat streaming down his face, it was the evidence of a desperate run that had brought him here.

In the infirmary, a boy sat up on the medical bed, and right in front of him was a medical personnel, a female doctor employed by the school authorities to ensure the health of their students.

Despite his interference with her work, the doctor remained calm as she finished wrapping up the boy's bruised shoulder with a bandage.

"Mr Matasuragi I assume?" She said calmly, she could tell by his concerns, his disregard for the school code of conduct.

Those were the actions of a caring parent.

"Yes, is my son alright?"

"He'll be fine, just a minor concussion and bruises, other than that, his vitals are normal." She responded, in her calm demeanor.

"Hey kid." She fixed her gaze on Kazuki. "It's not permitted in the school premises to be picking fights, the next time you decide to pick a fight, don't bother, that is unless you know you'll win."

She gathered her tools back in her medical kit, removed her lab coat and hung it by the wardrobe before heading out of the room.

"Hey! Are you seriously encouraging my son to pick a fight!?"

"No." She stopped at the door, and glanced over her shoulder at the man. "My shift ended an hour ago, I'm simply stating he shouldn't enter fights he knows he can't win, because when he gets beaten up, I end up having to treat him."

And just like that, she left.

"Honestly." The man sighed. "I've gotta rethink schools if this is the kind of people they employ, come on Kazuki, let's go."

They left the building and approached a car that was parked just right outside the academy, as Kazuki opened the side of the car, the first thing he saw was a small figure smiling at him almost like she had been expecting him all this while.

"Kazue! What the hell? That's creepy as fuck!"

"Language please." A woman's voice came from the passengers seat at the front of the car, and as Kazuki stretched into the car, he saw his mom.

"Mom!"

"Shut up!" She immediately gave him a huge knock that brought him into the car completely, her eyes twitched, veins pulsed on her forehead as she tried to control her anger. It was the third time this week they were called in by the school authorities because he got into a fight, and got beaten up every single time.

"Take it easy on the kid." Kazuki's father spoke calmly as he entered the driver's seat, shut the door behind him and turned the ignition key before the car engines roared to life.

"Tch, it's your fault he's like this! You keep pampering him!"

"And you keep wrecking him up."

Kazuki hurriedly closed the door as his father pressed on the accelerator, pushing the car forward into the road as they headed home.

Kazuki Matasuragi.

He was your everyday average 12-year-old boy with a lean build, black eyes, soft and a gel black hair. His looks and intelligence were nothing special, but he still stood out a little because of his hairstyle.

"Kazuki, what caused the fight this time?" His father asked as he navigated the car carefully down the road.

"Well, those bastards were bullying another kid, I couldn't just stand b-"

"Language!" His mother turned back and gave him another heavy knock which drove his head to the floor of the car this time. "There's an eight year old in the car for God sake!"

His father chuckled softly, he forgot how aggressive and wild his wife could get. "I almost forgot I married a cave woman."

"What was that?" Her attention shifted to him instantly, her fingers curled up into her fist almost immediately, ready to pounce on him at the slightest mistake he made.

"Nothing dear." He refused to make eye contact, he knew, doing so was would just fuel her desire to pummel him underneath his seat. "I'm not mad at you son, you did the right thing, but that didn't mean you had to fight, you could have reported."

"But dad, it's not the first time they've been reported, it was three of them ganging up on him, it wasn't fair!"

"There's nothing fair about this world Kazuki, all that matters is how you survive. You're right, it wasn't fair that it was three against one, no matter the situation you find yourself, to survive, you should never let the darkness in it consume you. All you can do is to stay in the light and hope everything works out." She finally calmed down, taking deep breaths before lecturing her son.

"No more fighting Kazuki, promise?"

"Okay Dad, I promise."

A bright smile lit up his cheeks, it was a smile so contagious that it spread across everyone in the car.

"Alright! Let's get some chicken wings, my trea-"

That's when it all happened.

CLAP!

They were halfway down the long, empty road when the sky rippled like disturbed waters. Without warning, the skies split open with a massive thunderclap, and a massive red portal pushed through the tear, its towering frame glowing with strange, shifting symbols as it pulsed with a mystic energy.

The once beautiful, blue and clear skies now casted an eerie red light across the entire country, a literal hell on earth!

From the car, the family of four could see the change in the sky, and to make matters worse, the massive red portal was directly above them.

"Dad... The sky... It's turned red!" They all had their heads out of the window, gazing up directly at the portal.

It was a Colossal Gate.

"Everyone head inside the car and put on your seatbelts now!" As he shouted, they didn't hesitate.

They returned their heads into the window and without a moment to waste, his father stomped on the accelerator, almost breaking it in the process as the engines roared even louder before the car sped down the road.

"I-impossible... Why did a Colossal gate appear now!? Has the conditions already been met!?" His wife asked, unable to fathom the fear she saw in her husband's eyes.

"I don't know, but I'm not keeping us here long enough to find ou-"

BOOM!

Almost immediately, a massive projectile tore from the blood-red sky and slammed into the road ahead, the impact hurling the car into the air. It flipped over, it's metal frame shrieking as it scraped and tumbled hard across the road.

"A-argh" Kazuki groaned, blood dripped slowly from the side of his face as he was upside down in the car, held in place tightly by his seatbelt.

"Kazuki!" Without thinking straight, his father broke the glass window besides him with a rock by the side of the road and dragged him out of the wrecked car. Luckily for them all, they escaped by the strand of their hair.

"Are you alright?"

"I-I think, what happened?"

"I don't know, but we don't have time for that right now, let's get out of he-"

A loud shirek from Kazue directed all their attention ahead, all their eyes wavered in disbelief, their body trembled, and their legs simply refused to move.

"W-what is that..." Kazuki muttered under his breath as a large figure with a pair of glowing red eyes emerged from the side of the road. And there was nothing human about it, its skin as hard and unyielding as jagged stone. Fangs curved like shattered ivory jutted from its snarling maw, and its eyes glowed a fierce, unholy red, burning with a hunger that chilled the air

Almost immediately, the air was filled with screams from all around them at a distance, from the red portal above, many more of these creatures descended from the skies, landing at different parts of the country.

"Run... Run!" His father picked up Kazue in his hands as all of them got to their feet and took off instantly, adrenaline pumped through all of them as they ran like their lives depended on it, and it did.

With a loud roar, the beast lunged forward, racing at them with a terrifying speed.

As they ran, his mother had no idea when she tripped on a stone, and just like that, she went tumbling across the ground.

"Mom!"

His father immediately placed Kazue in Kazuki's hands, rushing towards his mother's side at once. "Go go go go go!"

Just as he reached her side, his eyes widened in shock. Turning to his right, he saw another beast, its jaws dripping with saliva as it stared him down. Its bloodlust pressed against him like a weight, freezing him, and in the next instant, it lunged, crushing his right side with brutal force.

"DAD!!!!" His dad's antagonizing screams filled the air, and in the next moment, the creature from the crash started feasting on his mother, crushing them to chunks of meat underneath it's powerful jaws.

"Run!!! Kazuki!!!" With a desperate groan, he urged his son to run away, and with heavy tears in his eyes and his sisters, he ran away with Kazue in his arms as the voices of their parents slowly faded away.

As he ran away with Kazue, he couldn't control the tears that streamed down his face, he just watched his parents die in the most gruesome way possible. However, just before he could grief, a low rumble came from behind him.

The moment he looked over his shoulder, another beast was there, moving with terrifying speed. In an instant, its claws plunged deep into Kazuki's back, and he was flung across the road like a ragdoll.

"AAARGHHHH!" He screamed in agony as he and his sister hit the ground, Kazue tumbled from his grasp, knocked unconscious by the force of the impact.

Desperately, he crawled toward his sister, each movement was agonizing as blood poured from the deep cuts on his back..

"K-Kazue..." As he muttered under his breath, a deafening roar split the air. Looking up, he found the beast's massive form plummeting from the sky, it's jaws gaping, and fangs wide with bloodlust.

His eyes widened in terror as the beast drew nearer, and in that moment, he saw it clearly, his inevitable death.

Then.

Kazuki's eyes snapped open as his back jolted off the bed, sweat streamed down his face like a waterfall, and his bed was completely soaked.

"A dream?" It wasn't just a dream, it was a nightmare.

"Damn it..." His breathing was heavy, almost like it actually happened to him while he slept.

It wasn't just a dream, it was a painful reminder of what made him and sister into orphans. And the day mankind learnt the hard way, that they weren't alone in this universe.
