Got to love military life, deployed overseas to Japan for 6 or so months, probably longer. 9 people I work with deployed with me and I liked maybe 4 of them. Command doesn't give a shit about your family life back home they care about the mission they always care about the mission. So I have a minor case of escapism so what if I read a book every chance I get and so what if its the same book for the 6th or 10th time I don't care it has 8 different books and I will keep reading. But my parents would get mad at me if they found out I was sitting inside reading all day. So I decided to go out, I can still read while I walk. It will be fine… maybe. But it still pisses me off. I'm 19 dammit , let me live my life. "Screeeech" That causes me to look up down the street. I see a truck skidding all over the place, taking in my surroundings trying to find a safe place. There's a little girl chasing her cat into the middle of the road. My legs were moving before I could process what I was thinking but my brain caught up eventually 'fuck why am I doing this this is gonna go badly and its gonna hurt so bad I might not even make it on time' pumping my legs faster than I ever have pushing the limits my muscles have I can feel a pop in my leg 'yup about what I expected' halfway there the truck is moving faster because of course. It was moving downhill, gritting my teeth. I push even harder. "boom" sounded like a gunshot but in japan it almost definitely wasn't. I trip as my legs and feet fail me. It puts me on target to get between the truck and the girl with not much time to react, but I'll have to figure something out. I pull her into me and turn my back as it makes collision *pwah* the air leaves my lungs as I'm hit, I can hear the air whistling past my head see the world spinning, I tighten my grip and *crash* hit a wall. The girl is still tight in my grip. I fall to the ground still shielding her from the impact. My vision is blurry. My body feels like it's been put in a car compactor but with the last of my sanity I reach up and pat the crying girl's head. "It's okay sweetheart you're safe now" I flash her an award winning smile…okay it was I swear just because I was missing a bunch of teeth does not mean it wasn't award winning. Looking her over and seeing her uninjured I finally let the blurriness in my eyes take me. I floated in a void for a while, it was not fun. I would not recommend it to anyone but the lack of my lifelong tinnitus was a huge bonus I did not see coming. The constant ringing being a backdrop to every silence gets sickening.
I'm not sure when it changed but the darkness of the void faded into regular darkness, I opened my eyes blearily , blinking the crust away. All I could feel was pain. "Why does it still feel like I got hit by a truck?"
"SOOOOOON YOUR AWAKE." Before I had time to look around I could feel the warm embrace of someone who is clearly my mother, I was suffocated in love and as much as I could tell she was trying to be gentle it hurt.
"What happened?"
"You protected your sister from a carriage gone crazy, the people in the carriage have been taken care of but I am so proud of you my son. Your sister is fine, not a scratch on her."
"Mistress, the young masters fiance has arrived."
"Oh good she wrote dozens of letters asking for updates."
"Let her come see him"
"Very well mistress."
"Mother can I have a second to get my bearings please."
"Okay raef I will keep her occupied for a couple minutes but you need to make it fast."
"Yes mother I will."

Finally starting to get feeling back in my body I sit up and stretch my long unused muscles.
