The chamber was not supposed to exist.
Buried five levels beneath NeoGeneX headquarters, past steel blast doors and retinal scanners, past signs that read :AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
in triplicate,it was a place even most of the board had never seen.
Inside, the air was cold - too cold- and smelled faintly of antiseptic and ozone. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, illuminating rows of empty glass pod. Empty, except for one.
The one that mattered.
The pod
Frosted glass. A silhouette inside. Broad shoulders, head bowed, muscles coiled in stillness like a predator waiting for the door to open.
The technicians in white coats moved around the pod with military precision, typing commands, checking monitors. None of them spoke above a whisper.
Dr. Evelyn Cross didn't glance up from her tablet. Her fingers danced over the screen, approving release protocols.
" We're not sure," she said coolly. "That's why it's exciting."
The technician hesitated, then pressed the final sequence. Hydraulics hissed.
The pod released a burst of supercooled vapor, rolling across the floor like ghostly fog. Alarms chimed softly as restraints disengaged. Then...movement .
The figure inside straightened slowly, the sound of cracking joints echoing like gunshots in the silence. His skin gleamed pale under the lights, shot through with faint, glowing circuitry beneath the surface. His eyes snapped open- icy blue, mechanical yet alive. Harbinger had awakened.
He stepped out, each movement precise, heavy , deliberate. His feet left scorch marks where they touched the floor, as if the energy inside him was straining to break free. One technician backed away.
"My God..."
Cross finally looked up, her smile thin and sharp.
"No," she corrected, her heels clicking against the steel floor as she approached. "Not God."
Harbinger's gaze tracked her. He tilted his head, voice deep, synthetic, and unsettlingly calm.
"Command?"
Cross's grin widened. " I want you to find Patient Zero. Zeke Carter . And when you do ..." She leaned in close, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want the world to learn what fear tastes like."
Meanwhile...
In a motel on the outskirts of Sacramento, Zeke jolted awake in the middle of the night. Sweat clung to his forehead. Sparks tingled across his fingertips unbidden.
Maya stirred beside him, half asleep. " Zeke? You okay?"
He stared at his hands, chest heaving, an unfamiliar chill crawling down his spine.
"I... I don't know," he whispered. " I just felt... Like something woke up."
