Chapter 19 - 19. WHEN THE SHADOWS BREAK

Harbinger didn't walk through the world. He consumed it.

Every step he took left faint scorch marks on the ground, like the earth itself recoiled from his presence. His movements were slow but deliberate, like a predator that already knew the prey had nowhere to run.

And tonight, the tether sang louder than ever.

He followed the hum across the city. Past freeway lights blurring with the speed of cars. Past neighborhoods where kids laughed at glowing phone screens, blissfully unaware of the monster that stalked their streets. Past the sirens and smoke of a fire his last mission had left behind.

Until finally, he stopped.

An abandoned skate park.

Sparks in the Dark

Zeke didn't sleep that night. Couldn't. Every time he closed his eyes, he felt it—the buzz, the hum, the echo of something vast and merciless pressing at the edges of his mind.

Maya had crashed on the old bleachers, hoodie pulled tight, her breathing even. She could sleep anywhere. Zeke envied her for that.

He sat on the ramp, staring at his hands. They still glowed faintly in the dark, little sparks twitching under his skin. He hated them. Hated the way his body felt like a bomb waiting for someone else to light the fuse.

And then the hum spiked.

Zeke's head jerked up. He wasn't imagining it—this time it was real, sharp, and pulling.

"Maya," he whispered.

She stirred instantly—she always had that soldier's instinct, light sleeper despite her jokes. "What's wrong?"

He didn't get to answer.

The shadows moved.

They didn't stretch naturally. They bent, twisted, and thickened, like tar oozing across the ground. And from them, a shape emerged—towering, inhuman, his eyes glowing like molten coals.

Maya gasped. Zeke froze.

Harbinger had arrived.

The First Clash

Zeke scrambled to his feet, heart punching his ribs. "Oh, hell no."

Maya grabbed his arm. "Zeke—"

But Harbinger didn't wait. With a movement too fast for his size, he lunged, fist slamming into the concrete ramp where Zeke had just been standing. The ramp crumpled like paper, chunks of debris flying.

"MOVE!" Maya shouted, shoving Zeke backward. They rolled across the ground just as Harbinger ripped the rail free and hurled it like a spear. It whistled through the air and embedded into a wall with a bone-jarring clang.

Zeke's panic broke into words. "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!"

Maya yelled back, "That's the thing Zara was warning us about!"

"Could've used that yesterday!"

Another swing from Harbinger, another crater in the concrete. Dust and sparks filled the air. Zeke coughed, his vision blurring—until instinct took over.

The hum roared inside him, answering Harbinger like a tuning fork. Zeke's hands lit up, glowing blue-white, arcs of lightning snapping between his fingers.

He didn't think. He just aimed and fired.

The bolt hit Harbinger square in the chest. The shock lit up the park, rattled windows three blocks away, and sent Harbinger staggering back a full step.

Zeke blinked in disbelief. "Did I… did I actually—"

Harbinger straightened. Smoke curled off his armor-like skin. He tilted his head slowly, like an animal acknowledging another predator.

And then he smiled.

"Oh," Zeke whispered. "That's bad."

The Tether Tightens

The next moments blurred.

Harbinger advanced, each step heavy enough to crack pavement. Zeke fired again—wild arcs of energy that blasted holes in the ground, in walls, in everything except their target. Harbinger swatted one aside like a mosquito.

Maya darted around him, fast and fearless, hurling whatever she could grab—chunks of debris, a broken skateboard, a literal trash can lid. None of it slowed him. But it distracted him, and that was enough.

"Zeke, focus!" she shouted. "Not wild! Direct it!"

"I'M TRYING!"

But trying wasn't enough. Every time Zeke touched the hum, it surged harder, wilder, like it wanted out. Like it wanted to answer Harbinger instead of him.

And then he felt it.

The tether.

Not just a hum this time, but a pulse. A direct link. For a fraction of a second, Zeke wasn't standing in a skate park. He was standing inside Harbinger's mind.

It was fire and ash and hunger. A void of purpose, filled only with one thought: consume the tether.

Zeke staggered, clutching his head, the link tearing into him like a migraine made of knives.

Maya grabbed him, her voice sharp. "Zeke! Stay with me!"

Through the haze, he saw Harbinger closing in, fist raised, red eyes burning.

And Zeke realized—Harbinger wasn't here to kill him.

He was here to take him.

Break in the Storm

The fist came down.

Zeke screamed—not in fear, but in raw desperation. The hum inside him erupted, blasting outward in a shockwave of light and force.

The entire skate park convulsed. Concrete shattered, metal rails twisted like tin foil, graffiti was burned off walls in an instant. The blast hurled Harbinger backward, slamming him into a wall so hard the whole structure cracked.

Silence.

Dust rained down, filling the air with grit. Zeke collapsed to his knees, chest heaving, sparks still twitching under his skin like restless lightning bugs.

Maya dropped beside him. "Zeke. Zeke! Look at me."

He looked up, eyes glowing faintly blue, terrified. "I felt him, Maya. In my head. He's… he's me. Or I'm him. Or—" His voice cracked. "I don't know. But he's not gonna stop."

From the rubble, Harbinger stirred. His body cracked, bruised, but not broken. He rose slowly, fixing Zeke with that same awful, knowing smile.

And then, just as suddenly as he came, he vanished into the shadows—gone like smoke in the wind.

Zeke trembled. Maya squeezed his shoulder.

"He's coming back, isn't he?" she whispered.

Zeke swallowed hard. "Yeah. And next time… I don't know if I can stop him."
