The entire auditorium fell silent, including Ada. Every person seemed to hold their breath as the tension in the room thickened.
"My king, please," Councilman Price stepped forward, his voice carrying a hint of desperation. "Our selection process remains incomplete."
King Eric pivoted to face the council members, his jaw set in determination. "This matter will be addressed at a later time. But let me make myself perfectly clear—I will not choose a mate until this war has been resolved. You may present your candidates, but no woman will ascend to queen until every citizen is safe." His declaration left the room so quiet you could hear heartbeats.
"But my king," Price protested, his voice faltering, "an heir is necessary for the kingdom's stability."
