Chapter 21 - Chapter 6 The Rift’s Shadow

After the success of the first trade caravan, a sense of cautious optimism settled over the Rift Farmers' Guild. But beneath the surface, an unsettling presence began to stir.

One evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, Hassan was walking near the Rift's edge when he felt a chill in the air — unnatural and heavy. The familiar hum of magic was muted, replaced by a dark silence.

From the shadows, a creeping darkness curled like smoke, twisting and writhing just beyond the Rift's veil. Hassan's heart quickened. This was no ordinary threat; something ancient and malevolent was awakening.

He hurried back to the Guild's meeting place, where Arafa and Patrick were already gathered with the elders. "Something dark is growing beyond the Rift," Hassan warned. "I could feel it with my own skin."

Arafa's face grew grave. "The Rift has always been a gateway, but sometimes, it lets through forces we are not ready to face. We must be vigilant."

Patrick added, "We need scouts to patrol further than before and magical wards stronger than any we've cast."

As days passed, strange things began to happen. Crops withered inexplicably. Animals grew restless and fled. Whispers in the wind spoke of shadows moving just beyond sight.

Hassan organized patrols, sending trusted Guild members into the wilderness beyond the Rift. They returned with tales of twisted creatures lurking in the darkness — neither fully human nor spirit.

Back at the farm, the community grew tense but resilient. Hassan called a council, urging unity. "We cannot let fear divide us. The Rift has brought us together — magic and humanity. Together, we will face this shadow."

The elders agreed to hold a ritual to strengthen the Rift's protective wards. Arafa led the ceremony, weaving light and ancient words into a shimmering barrier.

As the night fell, Hassan stood watch, eyes scanning the darkness. Though the shadow lingered, the light of the wards pushed it back — for now.

But deep inside, Hassan knew this was only the beginning. The Rift's shadow was a warning, a sign that greater challenges were yet to come.
