Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Sarah Junes or, Dr. Sarah Junes, was what my name was before i came into this world, i was a gynaecologist, a 29 year old renowned gynaecologist.

Ever since I became an orphan, i preferred being all alone, because I had grown used to being alone my whole life so even when life gave me chances to have someone in my life i used to turn my face from those decisions and turn myself over to a world that was never before, a world fantasy, novels and books became an escapism.

I was on my way back home when I stopped at the convenience store to buy something for my breakfast when there was a loud explosion.

I was there in the explosion, but I didn't die. I got transmigrated into a novel and ended up becoming the villainess, the ruthless one on top, and I now have to do everything to prevent her pitiful death.

With all thoughts circulating in my mind, I got out of the bathtub and wrapped a towel around my body and walked to the wash basin, staring at my reflection in the mirror.

I touched my face, amazed, Laurel's beauty was no joke—her silky hair was a beautiful shade of crimson, deep blue-coloured eyes as if looking into a deep ocean, honey skin, rosy cheeks, petite figure—she had it all.

No wonder she went mad, when Cassian didn't fall for her.

I shrugged and walked out of my bathroom. Before I could step into the walk-in closet, my eyes went to a brown leather journal kept on Laurel's desk. Curiosity came over me as I rushed towards the table with a hand grabbing on the towel and picked up the journal and opened it.

The journal was covered in ink—diary entries that Laurie had written to herself. Everything was there... almost everything that happened with Laurel, at least 90 days before the incident.

I kept the journal aside to read it later and began searching for other things. Then I walked to my closet, hoping to find things there. Other than expensive outfits, purses, jewellery and shoes, I managed to get my hands on a cardboard box. As I opened the lid, I found many things inside it—pictures, letters, newspapers, magazines—and all had the same person on them: Cassian Valor.

Which concluded that Laurel's obsession with Cassian had already started, and the heavy amount of evidence was kept right in front of me, printed on papers.

A knock was what broke my trance.

"W...what happened?"...

"Ms. Miller, your parents are back home. They are waiting for you, along with a doctor, to come downstairs."

I stared at the door, processing the words the maid had spoken.

"Yes, tell them I'm coming."

A maid spoke through the other side of the door, and then there were fading footsteps heard around the hallway. I got up and kept the cardboard box back in its place, changed my clothes, the way Laurel would get ready, dress, hair cascading down my back, block heels at home, light makeup, expensive perfume and as i got ready, i went downstairs to meet Mr. and Mrs. Miller—

Logan and Katherine Miller.

I ascended down the stairs, and Laurel's parents, who were sitting, stood up upon hearing my footsteps.

"Laurel!" said the mother before she embraced me in a warm hug.

"My daughter, are you okay? are you hurt, do you even know how worrried we were for you" Katherine wiped her tears as she held onto my hand as the doctor stepped up front.

"May i check her?" the doctor asked as Katherine stood uo from her place quickly.

"yeah sure" she stood up walking away to Logan as if she had not been shedding tears a few seconds ago.

The doctor checked me and ensured that there was nothing serious, then prescribed some fever-reducing pills. Kalix, who was present there, walked with the doctor to see him off, leaving me all alone with Logan and Katherine Miller.

My mind still couldn't grasp everything that had happened. Katherine—now my mother—was standing beside her husband, looking at me with worry. As soon as the doctor left, she came next to me and sat on the couch, caressing my cheeks with her cold, trembling hands.

"I'm sorry, dear. I shouldn't have sent you there. I shouldn't have forced you to do something you didn't want to do."

I stared at her face, confusion etched across mine. She sent me where? That too, forcefully?

No matter how little the author had revealed about Laurel's relationship with her family, one thing was clear: Laurel wasn't someone who did things just because someone suggested them—let alone be forced to. Then what had happened?

Katherine looked at me with tearful eyes and held my hands.

"I'm sorry. I should've thought before doing something so reckless. I really didn't know this was how things would end up... I'm sorry!" Katherine sobbed as she spoke.

Kalix had now returned to the living room and had heard everything Katherine had told me.

"Forced to—send her—where, Mother?" Kalix asked in a slightly strict amd mocking tone. I could feel the atmosphere tensing up—Kalix glaring at his mother was enough to make it clear that he had no idea about where Katherine had sent Laurel.

The situation was becoming more confusing with every passing second, things revealing themselves slowly... There wasn't a single scene or chapter in the novel that had Kalix misbehaving with his own mother. That became a furious reminder—that whoever it is, he or she should definitely not even think about hurting his baby sister, Laurel Miller.

"KALIX MILLER!" Logan, who had been quiet throughout everything, finally spoke up, his voice full of fire as he stepped forward toward Kalix.

"Is this the way you speak to your mother?" Logan roared, his words coming out like liquid fire. I hadn't expected things to escalate this quickly—and that too, so badly.

"She. Is. Not. My. Mother!" Kalix spoke through gritted teeth.

And that's when a loud slap echoed throughout the entire living room.

Logan had raised his hand on his own son. What was happening? This wasn't how this family was portrayed. They were supposed to be a loving and happy family—not a toxic one. Then what had gone wrong?

Katherine stood frozen in her place, not moving an inch, staring in the direction of Logan and Kalix.

"I said it once, and I'll say it again—she might be your wife, but she will never be mine and Laurel's mother. EVER!" Kalix said and gently grabbed my hand as he took me out of the house, made me sit in the car, and started the engine while Logan kept screaming his name out loud from behind.

I remained quiet, not wanting to say anything that might infuriate him further. But as soon as the car started moving, Kalix ruffled my hair, taking me off guard.

"I'm sorry..." His voice sounded quite saddened taking me by shock.

Sorry? For what?
