Chapter 14 - Recovering

Sapphire P.O.V.

I woke up to an annoying beeping sound like a typical alarm clock sound, but I got confused as my alarm does not sound like this, so I open my eyes a little disoriented to find myself on a hospital bed with wires connected to me and the annoying beeping sound that woke me up is the beeping of the heart monitor. I took another look around the room and it looks like a hospital room with everything being the color white except for the machine.

Then I remember vaguely what happened when I woke a bit before this and I'm relieved to remember that Beth is fine and doing much better than me as she can walk around already. As I was thinking about Beth, I suddenly felt thirsty, so I press the button that is beside my bed to call for help. I only had to wait for about two minutes when I heard a knock on the door and a nurse comes in when I gave permission.

"So, you're awake already that's good! I will inform the doctor that you have regain consciousness. Is there anything I can help you with?" she says with an upbeat voice like she is happy to be working here. I just nodded my head and ask her for a glass of water. "Of course! I will get you a glass of water right after I talk to your doctor which won't be more than a few minutes. You can wait for a few minutes, right?" she informs me, and I nodded my head.

She smiles at me and tells me she will be back in just a few minutes. When the nurse left, I just look around the room for something to do because I was starting to get bored even though I just woke up. I'm the type of person that gets bored easily. That is why I don't like hospitals because it is so boring with nothing to do but lay on the bed and stare at the white walls.

I am just about to explode out of boredom and thirst when there is a knock on my door again, and I told whoever is at the door to come in. The door opens to reveal an old man in his late 50's in a white coat with the nurse from just now following behind him carrying a glass of water in her hands. He must be my doctor but before he says anything I ask for the water because my throat is parched, and I need some water to soothe my dry throat.

The nurse quickly walks towards me and hands me the glass of water which I took after saying my gratitude to her and drink the whole glass in one go. After I finish drinking the whole glass, I let out a satisfied sigh when I heard someone clearing their throat. I look up embarrassed, as I had forgotten that the doctor is here.

He smiles at me kindly and tells the nurse to bring me another glass of water, so she nods at him and did as she was told walking out the room and closing the behind her making the doctor and I the only ones left in the room.

"How are you feeling right now beside your sore throat?" he asks me in a kind voice that puts people at ease. I am happy to get a doctor like this and not the grumpy ones that are always so serious. So, I answered him kindly "I'm fine just that it's hard to move my body as I feel numb". He wrote down something on the clipboard then flips the pages on the clipboard reading something and looks at the heart monitor. Then he looks up at me with a warm smile.

"Good news. You are recovering very well and will be discharged from the hospital in another two days or so" he says while checking my pulse and jotting down something. I am so happy to hear that I can be discharged from the hospital soon as it means I won't have to miss more workdays. My reaction must have been common as he didn't bat an eye at me and cautions me on want not to do and then leaves the room.

After the doctor left, nothing much happened besides Beth coming to my room to keep me company for a while and she told me something that caught me off guard. She told me the officer that was interrogating her was my ex-boyfriend from college and that he still remembers me. She also told me he saw me, but I was unconscious. I thanked God I was unconscious so that I didn't have to meet him.

I would not know what to say to him if I ever met him anyway. It will be kind of awkward because I'm the one who asked for the breakup. I didn't break up with him because he was a horrible boyfriend or anything on the contrary, he was the best boyfriend you could ask for. Alas I just didn't feel the sparks with him anymore so I decided to end things because he deserves someone who will love him with all their heart, and I was not able to provide him that. But I wonder what his thoughts are on why we broke up. Hopefully I explained properly that it's my fault and not his.

I know Beth is planning to do something because she had this thinking expression on her face, but hopefully its nothing crazy. Anyways my stay at the hospital went surprisingly fast and before I knew it, I can leave the hospital. All my major injuries are healed and only a few bruises here and there and a couple of scars that are left.

I am quite anxious to return to work, as I have some explaining to do that is if I didn't lose my job all ready. Beth said she took care of it, but I can't help but to worry. I was discharged from the hospital on a Saturday, and I took the whole Sunday to prepare for work on Monday with Beth begging me to take a break but of course I didn't listen and was determined to go back to work on Monday.

She sees that I am stubborn on this matter and can't change my mind, so she gave up and helps me to sort out everything instead. I manage to finish everything by Sunday night with. Thanks to Beth's help I was able to get everything done on time. I then collapse on my bed too tired to do anything else but sleep.

The next morning, I am woken up by my alarm, went it rang at exactly 6:30am. I then got off my bed and head to my bathroom to shower and then put on my outfit. Once I am sure I look presentable, I left my room with everything I need for work and then I walked to the kitchen to grab a sandwich from the fridge for breakfast that I made yesterday. Then I grabbed my keys that was on the table and walk to the front door.

I want to say goodbye to Beth, but I didn't want to wake her up so early so I lock the door. Once I reach my car, I use my car keys to open the car. I got in the car and then put my stuff on the passenger seat and start the engine and drove off to my office.

I let out a sigh of relief when I look at the time. I am early just like I planned. I wanted to be early to show that I still value this job and hopefully the boss is in a good mood. I am thankful that I my phone and handbag was retrieved and sent to my address thanks to a kind individual, so I didn't lose my important things. I also had Beth pick up my car from the office so that I can drive to work today.

Thanks to me being early I was able to find parking quite easily and near the entrance to the building too. Once parked, I shut the engine grab my things and got out of the car, locking it as I walk to the office building. I enter the office foyer and look towards the reception desk expecting to see Sarah the receptionist, but I saw a different lady instead. She looks like she just finish college maybe she is an intern, but I didn't stay to find out. I just gave a polite smile at her before hurrying to the elevator.

The lift opens with a 'ding' after a minute of waiting and I enter the lift once people inside came out. I slowly tap my feet as I am waiting for the lift to reach my floor and after a minute or two, I heard the 'ding' signaling that the lift has reach a floor, so I look up and saw that it's my floor, so I walk out of the lift.

As I am walking towards my desk, my path is suddenly blocked by none other than the pack of ladies with their leader Veronica at the front. I let out an irritated sigh, as I didn't have the time nor energy for this. I have a lot of things to catch up on and I don't need their shit right now. I am just about to tell them to make way when Veronica speaks.

"Well, well! What do we have here? Has Miss Evans finally decides to grace us with her presence after so many days of absence without notice," she says in a condescending tone and her minions nods their heads in agreement. She must have seen the bruises on my face that I am not able to cover up with make-up which indicates that I have been injured, but I guess she decides to ignore that. I had to take a deep breath and count to ten, so that I won't lose my temper. I am just about to retort back when a loud voice was heard from behind me.

"What is going on here?"

"Why are you standing here blocking the way and not doing work?"

"I don't pay you to stand around doing nothing!"

I turn around and sure enough it was the boss with an expression that says he is mad right now. When I saw his expression I knew then that I am in so much trouble, but I can't help feeling that something like this situation had happen before.
