Chapter 19 - The Search

Sapphire P.O.V.

I woke up the next morning to the sound of my alarm clock ringing so loudly. I quickly close the alarm to stop the horrible noise so early in the morning when I remember that I only have to work for a half a day, as today is the day that I will start my search for Ruby, so I quickly got ready for work as quickly as I could so that I could reach work faster and complete my work as fast as possible.

I quickly did my morning routine and double check to make sure I have everything before leaving the house, making sure that the front door is lock then made my way to my car. As I got in the car, I put my things on the passenger seat wore my seatbelt and drove off.

Once I parked at the office building, I switch off the engine and then get out of the car grabbing my stuff on the passenger seat. I then walk briskly into the office building. As I walk past the lobby, I exchange greetings with Sarah who has returned to work from her leave. We had a short chat and she told me that her son is doing okay now and will be discharge from the hospital soon.

After chatting with her I went to the lift and pressed the up button and waited for a minute before the lift opens. I enter the lift with other people coming in after me. I had to wait in the lift for about two minutes before the elevator finally reaches my floor and I hurriedly walk to my desk without trouble.

I felt it comfortable to come to work now that Veronica and her minions can't bother me anymore as their leader was fired. And I'm not sure whether this is my imagination or not but the atmosphere in the office seems happier as almost everyone has a relax attitude compared to when Veronica was working here. I guess I'm not the only one that is happy about her being fired.

I shook my head to clear my thoughts and focus on my work. I work nonstop today and had to decline Catherine's invitation to have our normal lunch at the small café to make sure I completed everything on time so that I can leave earlier without making my boss dissatisfied with my work.

I manage to finish my work by noon, so I gather all the files and made my way to the boss's office for him to check. I knock on his door about three times and waited for his permission to enter. A few seconds later I hear him say "come in" in his deep voice. I took a deep breath then made my expression void of emotions and open the door greeting him with a polite "good afternoon, sir".

He just nodded at me and asked, "Have you completed the work you were assigned?". This time I nodded and hand him the files that is in my hands. He took the files and flip through them and as he read the files, I could not help thinking about how my sister married someone as cold hearted as him.

Maybe he was not this cold hearted when they were married, and he was more charming. At that thought I shiver as I cannot imagine the boss ever being a charmer. With his attitude now I can't think of him being anything but strict and harsh.

I was brought out of my thoughts when Mr. Giovanni says "that is all that I need for now. You can head home now". After he waves his hands to dismiss me. I am shocked that he let me off so easily, but I quickly pull myself out of my shock and say "thank you sir. Have a good weekend".

After that I wasted no time and got out of the office. As I walk to my desk to pack all my stuff to go back home, I wonder if Mr. Giovanni knows that I am his ex-wife's sister. No, he must know that I am Ruby's sister as she must have mentioned me to him at some point during their marriage when he asks her about her family. Maybe that's why the boss is being stricter with me compared to my other colleagues.

Does Mr. Giovanni know that my sister ran away from home? What was she doing when she ran away from home? Why did she want to break it off with him? All these questions are stuck in my head and I could hardly wait for them to be answered as I was driving home.

When I reach home, I see that Beth's car is already here which means she is inside the house waiting for me. That's good because as soon as I showered and change clothes, we can leave to go search at the first address and that is Ruby's old workplace.

I enter the house and the first thing I see is Beth laying sprawl on the couch in the living room watching TV. "Are you ready?" I ask her and she just nodded at me to engross with whatever she was watching so I let her be and went to my room to shower and change into clothes that are more comfortable to wear.

Then I made sure that I had packed everything that I needed and once I am ready, I carried my bag to the living room. Beth still has her eyes glued to the TV. I look at the TV to see what was on that made her eyes glued to the TV and it was the movie Thor.

I roll my eyes. No wonder, as Beth is in love with Chris Hemsworth, and nothing can distract her from watching a movie that he has acted in especially the movie Thor. So, I had to wait until the movie ended before we load all our stuff in my car and drove off to the first destination.

We decided to use my car as it is more comfortable to drive long distance compared to Beth's car that is smaller than my car and the inside of her car is quite cramp.

Anyway, I am going to drive to our first destination after that it's Beth's turn to drive. We decided to take turns like this so that while she drives, I can rest. The first place we are going to look is this fashion shop called Viva in the small city called Baker that's a few hours away.

On our way there Beth and I decided to talk and play games we used to play when we were in college so that it's not so boring but after forty minutes of driving her eyes became droopy and she fell asleep. I was always jealous of how she can just fall asleep like that whilst I must wait half an hour thinking of stuff that makes sleepy before I fall asleep.

After another two hours of driving, I reach the address and wake Beth up to help me search for a shop called Viva. I drove slowly so that I won't I miss any shop sign. Beth is the one who found the shop after a few minutes of searching. It is nestle between Starbucks and a small bookshop and to my luck there is a free parking spot right in front of the shop.

"This must be a sign that we are supposed to search here" Beth says getting excited and almost bouncing in her seat like we were detective looking for clues. I just roll my eyes at her and park in the parking space.

I hesitate to get out of the car to scared of what I will find but Beth gave the courage that I needed to get out of the car and walk into the shop after switching off the engine. I am glad that Beth insisted to come as she became the support that I need right now.

I push open the shop door and there was the normal 'ding' to indicate someone has entered the shop. Not two seconds after the 'ding' sound could be heard a worker in a pink uniform with the logo of the shop came to greet Beth and I with a friendly smile.

"Hello welcome to Viva. How can I help you?" she says in a polite tone. I didn't know what to say so Beth says, "hello, sorry to bother but we are just wondering if you had any worker here before by the name of Ruby Evans".

For some reason as soon as Beth says Ruby's name the friendly smile on her face was replace with an unpleasant frown. "Who are you? Why do you want to know? Are you a detective?" she asks her polite tone turned hard.

"No! We are not a detective" Beth reassures her. The worker's frown lessens and asks us again "if you're not a detective then why do you want to know about her?"

"My friend here is Ruby's younger sister, and she is looking for her. So, if you could be so kind as to tell us anything that you know about her, that will be helpful Annabelle" Beth says in her persuasive voice.

I got to hand it to Beth she really knows how to communicate with people to get the information that she wants. I thank God again that she came with me. I will have a tough time finding anything out as I'm not good with communicating with people.

I wonder how she knows the lady's name when I see that she is wearing a name tag, and I felt a little dumb that I didn't notice that. Annabelle turns to look at me and looks at my face for a few seconds before asking me for my identity card. I dug in my bag for my wallet and once I found it, I open the wallet pulling out my identity card and handed it to her.

She studies the card and once she is satisfied she hands it back to me. "I know Ruby as she used to work here a couple of years ago for a short while" she says. When she said that I knew I am on the right track to finding her.
