I open my eyes but had to quickly close it again to adjust to the brightness of my surroundings. I blink my eyes a couple of times. Once my eyes are adjusted, I look around and all I see around me is white wallpaper and I seem to be laying on a bed. I tried to lift my head but immediately fell back on the bed. My head felt like it was hit with a hammer. My head is pounding moreover I am having a headache. I look around as much as I could and figured out that I am in a hospital and laying on a hospital bed. I mentally slap myself in the face of course I am in the hospital the whole white color should have given it away.
I am in a small room that looks like a private room, so I am the only patient here. Then as I look around trying to find my bearings, I heard the door opening so I turn my head in the direction of the door. It's a man who seems about middle age with brown hair and kind face who I am guessing is a doctor because of his white lab coat. He looks up from his clipboard to me and when he sees that I am awake he smiles brightly at me.
"You're awake Miss Collins. That's good" he says while jotting something down on the clipboard. "Where am I? How did I get here? Why am I here?" I ask him anxiously. "One question at a time" he says while raising his hand in a surrender manner. He seems to be the laid-back type of doctor and not the strict doctors that follow the rules 100% which I am grateful for as I am disoriented right now and need someone who can be patience with me.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when he introduces himself. "My name is Dr. Anthony Miller, but you can call me Dr. Anthony. I will be your doctor until you are discharged from the hospital. You were brought here at Madeline Hospital two days ago. You were brought here unconscious because of exhaustion and injuries that you sustain all over your body but fortunately there were no broken bones that needed to be fixed. So, you can make a full recovery within a week with enough rest" he explains.
No wonder my body feels so heavy that I can't get up, but I could not remember how I got so badly injured that I needed to be hospitalized. The last thing I remember was I just finished work and was on my way back to Saph's house, after that it is all blank. He must have seen my confused expression because he further explains.
"I am guessing you do not remember what happen to you before you were brought here" he says, and I nodded. "Well, I am not surprised, with the injuries you sustain on your head, I am surprised you did not get a concussion" he says in an upbeat tone.
I paled.
It's a good thing that I didn't get a concussion, but now I'm scared as to how I got these injuries to begin with. Dr. Anthony continues his explanation. "You apparently got kidnapped and abused by your kidnapper, though not as bad as your friend who is still unconscious and severely injured but thankfully was brought here in time to treat her injuries" he reports. Saph! I thought and then there were flashes of images crossing my mind about what happened that I forgotten. I gasp when I remember some of it. My head is pounding and hurting trying to remember all that had happened when I was kidnapped.
I am clutching my head when Dr. Anthony sees that I am in pain he tells me, "Take it easy try not to stress out too much as that will make your headache worse." After a few minutes of me trying to calm myself, the headache slowly disappears, and I can focus again. "Are you okay?" Dr. Anthony asks in a worried tone. I just nodded my head tiredly.
"That is good. I know you have more questions, but you will have to speak with the police agent for more information. They will also be questioning you about what happened during your abduction. I can call them now if you ready" he asks. "Yes" I muttered my voice still not fully recovered. "Okay. Wait for a few minutes while I call for them" he says while walking to door. Once he got out of the room he closes the door behind him.
Once I'm alone in the room I started to sort out everything in my head, starting from the last thing I recall and what happened next but some of the memories are still fuzzy. I am only able to recall a few images of Saph getting tortured by some guy wearing black clothes anything other than that is fuzzy, and I get a migraine trying to remember, so I stop trying for now seeing as it's causing my headaches to worsen and wait for the police officer to arrive. He might have the answer to my questions.
A few tears escape my eyes when I remembered what the doctor told me about Saph's severe injuries and how it would have been bad if she hadn't arrive to hospital quickly. I had to wait for a few more minutes before someone arrives, knocking on the door asking for permission to come in who I allowed in. "Come in" I told the person knocking on the door. Then the door opens and a man wearing a police uniform walk into the room.
I look at him closely because he looks familiar, but I could not place where I have met him before. Then I think back to my college days when I remember where I have met him before. "Aren't you-" he interrupted me, as he must have seen from my expression that I remembered him. "Yes, I am Tobias Adams, we went to the same college. Nice to meet you again Miss Collins" he says it all very calmly. I looked at him a bit shocked, as this man was Saph's boyfriend during our college days.
I'm surprised he can separate work from personal issues as he used to be such a spontaneous kind of guy. He was a nice guy, so I never did understand why she broke up with him. He was a nice good-looking guy, not much of a romantic, but he did not forget important dates like her birthday, and their anniversary. Saph was very vague with her answer as to why she wanted to break it off with him. She just told me that she did not feel the sparks with him anymore and that she was certain they were not destined to be together, that they should meet new people.
He just patiently waited as I got out of my shock of meeting my best friend's ex-boyfriend to start talking. "I know it is shocking to meet me here Miss Collins, but I need to know how much you remember about your and Miss Evans's kidnapping" he asks me in a professional tone. I pulled myself together and tell him everything that I manage to remember.
I started to stutter when I was talking about how Saph was tormented. I cried halfway through recalling what happened. Tobias was very patient with me and waited until I calm down then ask me to continue so I did. By the time I finish explaining to him what happened he is just nodded his head and writes something on his notepad.
"Well now that you have answered my questions, I believe you have some questions to ask me?" he asks. Again, I nodded my head. "I will try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities but the questions that are confidential I will not be able to answer. I am sorry" he explains. For the hundredth time today, I nodded my head in understanding. "Okay then fire away" with a bit of humor in his voice that caught me of guard a little bit because he was so serious since he first started talking. "Okay. When did the police find Saph and I?" is my first question for him because I want to know how long I have been hospitalized.
"We found you guys at the kidnappers house two days ago" he answered checking his notepad. Okay I was not unconscious for long. Then I ask my second question "Who contacted the police to find us?". He hesitated a little bit and answered vaguely. "All you need to know is that we got you and Miss Evans out safely and that Mr. Marcus is in our custody". Okay I guess that was a confidential question.
Then I ask him my last question, the one I have been dying to know. "How did the police know where to find us?" as far as I know all of mine and Saph's electronic gadgets that could have a tracking device were thrown away. "Ah! You can thank Miss Evans for that" he smiles. I look at him with a confused face. How is Saph involved in the police finding out the location? He laughs which made his face look much younger and answered my unspoken question.
"It was her brilliant idea to put a small tracking device on the anklet that she gave you before" he explains with a little smirk on his face. My jaw drop. I could not believe Saph didn't mention anything about the tracking device when she gave me the anklet.
I am speechless at Saph for thinking to put a small tracking device where not many people would think of. Now that I am thinking about it, I remember that when we were at Marcus's house, she was calm and told me that not all hope is lost. This must have been what she was talking about. I voice out my question to him. "But why didn't Saph told me about it. If she had told me about it, then I would not have been so terrified," I said to Tobias.
Tobias shook his head. "She does not want you know about the tracking device because she knows that if you get kidnapped, they might torture you and find out about the tracking device. So, in case they ask you if you have any tracking device on your body you would not know anything, and they would not find out about it" he further explains.
Again, my jaw drop. I could not believe Saph thought that far ahead for my sake. Tears ran down my face. I truly am lucky to have a friend like her who thinks so much about my safety that she would have done just about anything to keep me safe. Then I remember that Tobias is still with me, so I look at him and ask, "Did you meet with her to talk about this?" He shook his head again.
"No, she talked to my partner Daniel. He is the one who told me all this". "So, Sapphire does not know about you being a police officer" I ask him. "No" he answers briefly. "Okay. I did not know you became a police officer, as I thought you wanted to be an engineer" I say trying to change the subject so it would not be awkward between us.
"Yes, I did want to be an engineer but when I took the course it felt boring for me, so I switch. A friend of mine told me to try being a police officer and that it's an interesting career so I tried it out. I found out that I like saving innocent people from danger, so I decided to stick to this career" he explains. 'Wow' I thought he really is a nice guy. You cannot find many guys like him nowadays. I wonder...
"I am sorry to ask something completely unrelated to this case but are you in a relationship right now?" I ask curious to know. He stiffened then relaxes a bit. "No, I am not in a relationship right now. I do not really have the time to go out dating as I am quite busy with my job" he says without a care. "Sorry I should not have asked you about that. It was inconsiderate of me" I apologize to him hoping he would be a little less tense. It worked his shoulder relax. "It is okay. It's just gets a bit lonely sometimes but I'm okay overall," he tells me with a hint of sadness in his voice.
"We can hang out whenever you're free or feeling lonely. You know as friends" I offer him. He thought about it for a moment then he smiles genuinely at me. "I would like that" he agrees. "Can I ask you another personal question? You do not have to answer if you do not want to. I am just curious to know" I told him quickly. He hesitated while thinking about something. After a moment he nodded his head allowing me to ask my question. "Do you still have feelings for Sapphire" I ask in one breath looking at him anticipating his answer.
I so wanted to know if he still has feelings for Saph and if he does, I can help hook them up again. He is seriously a good candidate for a boyfriend and Saph needs some boy attention in her life. He seems to be caught off guard by the question. He had that deer caught in a headlight look on his face. I was giddy this could mean he still harbors some feelings for Saph even though it has been years since they last saw each other. This is good news I can totally make use of this. "I-" he was about to answer when he got interrupted by a knock on the door.
I cleared my throat and asks, "who is it?" "It is me Dr. Anthony, I have some good news. May I come in?" Dr. Anthony asks. I look at Tobias and he gave a nod so I told him that he could come in. Dr. Anthony opens the door and when he sees Tobias he says, "I hope I did not interrupt anything".
"No, it is okay you did not interrupt anything important" I reassured him. "What is the good news you were saying just now" I got straight to the point of his visit. "Oh yes! The good news. I thought you would like to know because it concerns your friend Miss Sapphire Evans that was admitted here with you" he explains. My heart thudded in my chest, and I saw from the corner of my eyes that Tobias body stiffen slightly when the doctor said Saph's name.
"Did something happen to her" I ask worriedly. He must have seen my worried expression and quickly assures me. "It is okay. Nothing bad happen to her. It's the opposite, as she is responding well with her treatment that we are having her undergo and she is awake right now. She is also asking about you".
