The massive gates of Elysium slowly closed behind Kael, their ancient mechanisms echoing throughout the forgotten kingdom.
For a moment, he simply stood in silence.
This was the place he had seen in countless visions. The kingdom that had whispered his name long before he knew who he was. After eighteen years of questions, he had finally returned home.
Golden lights illuminated the streets as if the kingdom itself had awakened from a thousand-year slumber. Crystal flowers bloomed along the pathways, and ancient towers reached toward the sky, untouched by time.
"It doesn't feel abandoned," Kael said quietly.
"Because it isn't," Seraphina replied. "Elysium has been sleeping, waiting for its heir."
As they walked through the city, Kael began hearing the echoes once again. Unlike before, they no longer sounded distant or unfamiliar.
They sounded welcoming.
"Welcome home."
"The heir has returned."
"Our kingdom lives once more."
Kael stopped walking and turned toward the voices. Although no one else seemed surprised, he could feel countless memories surrounding him.
"This kingdom remembers everything," Seraphina explained. "Every king, every queen, every sacrifice. Nothing is truly forgotten here."
The further they traveled, the more strange things Kael noticed.
The crystal lamps brightened whenever he passed them. Ancient doors opened without being touched. Even the flowers seemed to turn toward him.
"It's responding to me," he whispered.
"Not to you," Seraphina corrected gently. "To your blood."
Soon, they arrived before the Royal Palace of Elysium.
Unlike the buildings surrounding it, the palace was enormous. Its walls were made of white crystal and silver stone that shimmered like moonlight. Ancient symbols glowed faintly across its surface.
The moment Kael stepped onto the palace grounds, the mark on his hand began glowing brightly.
Suddenly, a powerful wave of magic spread throughout the kingdom.
Every crystal tower illuminated at once.
The ancient bells of Elysium began ringing for the first time in a thousand years.
The guardians immediately fell to one knee.
"The palace has acknowledged him," one of them whispered in disbelief.
Kael could feel his heart racing.
He had spent his entire life feeling like he didn't belong anywhere.
Yet somehow, this kingdom had accepted him without hesitation.
As they entered the palace, Kael noticed dozens of portraits hanging along the grand hall. They depicted kings and queens of Elysium across many generations.
Then he stopped walking.
One portrait looked exactly like him.
"Who is that?" he asked.
Seraphina smiled sadly.
"King Aerion Arwyn. The greatest ruler Elysium ever had."
Kael couldn't take his eyes off the portrait.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
"He looks like me."
"Because you inherited more than his blood," Seraphina said quietly.
Before Kael could ask another question, the mark on his hand began burning once more.
The entire palace trembled.
A hidden door beneath the royal throne slowly opened, revealing an ancient staircase leading deep underground.
The echoes suddenly became louder than ever before.
"Come."
"The truth awaits."
"The heir must remember."
Arven stepped forward cautiously.
"That chamber wasn't here when I served the royal family."
"Only the rightful heir can reveal it," Seraphina explained.
Kael looked down the dark staircase.
"What's waiting for me?"
The old woman shook her head.
"Only the palace knows."
Without warning, a mysterious voice echoed from below.
"You are late, Kael Arwyn."
The voice belonged to neither man nor woman. It sounded ancient—older than the kingdom itself.
Everyone immediately became silent.
"Who's there?" Kael called.
There was no response.
Only silence.
Seraphina's expression became serious.
"You must go alone."
"Alone?"
"The magic protecting that chamber will not allow anyone else to enter."
Kael looked between his companions and the staircase.
For some reason, he felt both fear and familiarity.
It was as though something deep within him already knew what awaited below.
Taking a deep breath, he placed his hand over the glowing mark and began descending the ancient staircase.
The further he went, the louder the echoes became.
Memories of laughter.
Sounds of battle.
The voices of ancient rulers.
And then...
He heard a woman's voice.
Soft and gentle.
"My son..."
Kael froze.
His eyes widened immediately.
That voice.
He had never heard it before, yet somehow, he knew exactly who it belonged to.
"Mother?"
The voice spoke once more.
"If you have reached this place, then the prophecy has already begun."
Tears filled Kael's eyes as he continued walking deeper into the darkness.
But he could not shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.
Because hidden somewhere beneath the palace, another presence had awakened.
One that had been waiting for centuries.
Watching.
Smiling.
And preparing for the heir's arrival.
To be continued...
