After parting ways with Konan's group, Hozuki Zangetsu headed toward the battlefield between Konoha and the Stone Village. He had spent the last month mastering his new eyes; now, he just needed to find the right opportunity.
The war between the Stone and Konoha was at its peak. The Hidden Mist's surprise attack on Konoha had given the Stone Village a renewed hope for victory, prompting the Third Tsuchikage, Onoki, to double down and send more troops to the front lines.
Konoha, now fighting a three-front war against the Cloud, Stone, and Mist, was completely suppressed. Their defensive lines were collapsing, and they were forced to fall back to a few key strongholds. But a prolonged defense was not a solution. They had lost the initiative, and even with Konoha's vast resources, they would eventually be exhausted.
In this dire situation, Konoha's only hope for victory was a miracle.
And in the ninja world, a single powerful shinobi can often create miracles. Minato Namikaze was that miracle for Konoha. On the Iwagakure battlefield, he would use his Flying Thunder God Technique to dominate the field, killing all who stood in his way. He would almost single-handedly force the Stone Village to the negotiating table. The Third Great Ninja War was, in many ways, Minato's personal highlight reel. The name "Yellow Flash" would become legendary throughout the world.
Thinking of Minato's story, Zangetsu felt a flicker of admiration. But he was confident. His Mangekyo Sharingan's genjutsu was a perfect counter.
Ever since obtaining and strengthening his Uchiha bloodline, Zangetsu had been mentally preparing for a confrontation with Minato. He had no intention of giving up on Uzumaki Kushina, and given her relationship with Minato, there was no way to romance her without getting rid of him. For Zangetsu, Minato had to die.
But for now, Uchiha Fugaku was the more important target.
After entering the war zone, Zangetsu's first move was to scout Fugaku's situation. He headed straight for one of Konoha's garrisons and easily located a small unit of about a hundred ninja.
Night fell.
The moon and stars were hidden behind a thick layer of clouds, making the dark world even blacker.
Zangetsu wore a black, hooded robe, his face concealed by a cheap fox mask he had bought.
"The night is just right… for killing," he murmured to himself, walking steadily toward the distant Konoha camp.
"Who goes there?!"
When he was still a hundred meters from the sentry post, he was spotted. The Konoha ninja watched him warily, taking defensive stances. They didn't attack immediately. He was alone and making no effort to hide, which was strange for a Stone ninja. His attire looked more like that of a Konoha Anbu member.
Zangetsu ignored them and kept walking.
The ninja drew their weapons, some beginning to form hand seals. "Stop! Move again and we'll kill you," one of them warned, his voice grim.
Zangetsu finally stopped. Underneath the mask, a bloody and excited smile spread across his face.
He raised his hands and pushed back the hood of his robe. At the same time, his eyes transformed into the three-tomoe Sharingan. In the dim torchlight, one of the ninja saw his eyes.
"An Uchiha? Aren't you supposed to be in the southern sector? What are you doing here?" he asked, his guard lowering slightly.
"I'm here… to kill people."
As Zangetsu's voice fell, he vanished like a phantom. In the next instant, he appeared in front of the ninja who had just spoken, a kunai plunging into his abdomen. It wasn't teleportation or even a Body Flicker; his raw speed was simply too fast for these ninja to react.
"Oki?!!"
The other ninja cried out in shock. As Zangetsu pulled out his kunai and let the man fall, they roared in anger and swarmed him.
But how could they possibly be a match for him? They were mostly Chunin. The one Special Jonin among them had just been killed instantly. The rest were like ants before him.
Shink! Shink! Shink!!!
In seconds, he had cut down all who got close. The ninja who had stayed back to use ninjutsu were pale with terror.
"Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique!" one of them yelled, spitting a ball of fire at Zangetsu.
A look of disdain flashed in Zangetsu's eyes. He didn't even bother to dodge. His hands flew through seals so fast they were just a blur.
"Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique!!!"
A much larger, hotter, and more powerful fireball erupted from his mouth. It instantly swallowed the smaller one and continued on, engulfing the ninja behind it.
"ARGH!!!" A terrible scream filled the air as the man was consumed by the flames.
Playing with fire in front of an Uchiha? You're asking to die, Zangetsu thought mockingly.
"ENEMY ATTACK! ENEMY ATTACK!!!"
The alarms finally rang out, echoing across the night sky. The Konoha camp burst into life as a hundred ninja rushed from their tents, weapons in hand, toward the bright flames.
Beside the burning body, Zangetsu snapped the neck of another ninja, casually took the katana from the corpse's hand, and charged toward the incoming hundred-man force.
The night was just right for a slaughter.
