Seeing Zangetsu stop, Yahiko's eyes lit up. He passionately began to explain the Akatsuki's philosophy, their goal to bring peace to the world and end war.
"It sounds nice," Zangetsu nodded when he finished.
"So? Are you ready to join us and bring the dawn to this nation, to this world?" Yahiko asked eagerly.
"That's very difficult," Zangetsu said, looking at the boy. He was only fifteen, but he was already a decent leader, his eyes clear and full of faith. But he was too young, too naive, too impulsive. His life would be forever frozen at the age of fifteen. Zangetsu knew that soon, Yahiko would die in a conspiracy orchestrated by Danzo and Hanzo the Salamander, sacrificing himself to save Konan. What a tragic future.
"Although you've moved me, I can't accept your invitation right now," Zangetsu said, his tone grave and heavy. "I have something very important to do, something I must do alone. After I'm done, I will come find you and join you in pursuing… a beautiful world. If I can come back alive."
"We can help you!" Yahiko offered immediately.
"No, no one can help me with this. I must do it myself. Don't worry, I'll do my best to come back. Maybe in a month, maybe a few months, maybe a year… but one day, I will definitely return. Just don't shut the door on me then."
Zangetsu had no intention of joining now. He planned to wait until after Yahiko was dead, when Obito and Zetsu were pulling the strings. He knew almost everything about Obito and wasn't afraid of him.
"Well… alright. We hope you can finish your business. Don't worry, the doors of the Akatsuki will always be open for you. Because you're already one of us, aren't you? For our shared dream!" Yahiko said with a bright smile, already considering Zangetsu a member.
Zangetsu put on a moved expression, staring at Yahiko for a few seconds. "I haven't agreed to join yet… at least, not until I come back alive. For now, I must leave. I hope we can meet again… try not to die before then."
"By the way, my name is Kigetsu," he said, then gave the three a deep look and vanished with a Body Flicker.
Save Yahiko? Not a chance. If he lives, how am I supposed to romance Konan? Yahiko must die.
After Zangetsu left, Konan said to Yahiko, "You were too impulsive. We don't know anything about him."
"Hahaha, it's fine, Konan. I trust him," Yahiko said confidently. It was this same confidence that would lead to his early death; he had mistakenly trusted Hanzo.
"As you wish," Konan sighed, knowing she couldn't change his mind.
"Kigetsu is strong. We need his power. He can make Hanzo take us seriously and help the Akatsuki grow," Yahiko explained. He desperately needed someone powerful to give their organization legitimacy.
A key reason for his choice was that his investigation had shown that all of Zangetsu's bounty targets were evil men who deserved to die. So, Yahiko believed Zangetsu was a good person at heart.
This, however, was a beautiful misunderstanding.
Zangetsu never checked if his targets were good or bad; he only cared about their abilities. It just so happened that in this world, almost anyone with a high bounty was a villain. Of course, this beautiful misunderstanding might also have had a little something to do with Zangetsu's luck.
After all, his Mangekyo was literally a lucky four-leaf clover.
