Obtaining the Mangekyo Sharingan from Uchiha Mikoto was an unexpected and immense joy for Hozuki Zangetsu. It was a massive boost to his power, a pair of eyes that could rapidly elevate him to the level of a Kage.
But these eyes also brought him significant problems.
The main issue was chakra consumption.
Zangetsu was not an Uchiha; he did not possess their bloodline. As a result, he had become like Hatake Kakashi: his Sharingan was always active, and he couldn't turn it off. Even if he kept it at the base tomoe stage, the constant chakra drain was a huge burden for a non-Uchiha.
Zangetsu had to find a solution. He saw two paths.
The first was to solve the bloodline problem by acquiring the Uchiha bloodline or another bloodline compatible with the Sharingan. The second was to solve the chakra problem. If he had as much chakra as Hashirama Senju or Naruto, the drain from the Sharingan would be negligible.
He could potentially solve this through Tsunade, whose Senju constitution was just as compatible with the Sharingan as an Uchiha's. He could also target Uzumaki Kushina. The Uzumaki clan members were all known for their massive chakra reserves. If he got the Uzumaki constitution, he could endure the Sharingan's consumption, even if it wasn't a perfect match. And Kushina didn't just have the Uzumaki bloodline; she also had… the Nine-Tails!
But while the chakra consumption could be managed, the problem of the Mangekyo Sharingan leading to blindness with overuse—and the issue of its future evolution—was not so easily solved.
This was why Zangetsu had decisively used the "Love Without Regrets" bracelet on Mikoto without hesitation. Unless he could get the Senju bloodline from Tsunade, allowing him to use the Mangekyo without limit like Obito, he would always face the threat of blindness. And even if he managed that, evolving to the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan was another hurdle.
Solving both problems through Tsunade was too difficult. It was far better to stick with Uchiha Mikoto.
According to the original story, she had nine years until she died on the night of the Uchiha clan massacre. Zangetsu didn't believe he couldn't fully conquer her in nine years.
After all, his own Mangekyo Sharingan abilities were perfectly suited for such a task.
Thinking of his new powers, a smile spread across Zangetsu's lips. His Mangekyo Sharingan—or rather, his and Mikoto's Mangekyo Sharingan—specialized in spiritual genjutsu.
His left eye's ability was called Three Thousand Phantom Worlds. It could pull the spirit of anyone who looked into his eye into an endless world of illusions, causing them to drown in madness. It was similar to Itachi's Tsukuyomi, but with key differences.
In Itachi's Tsukuyomi, all factors—time, space, mass—were controlled by the caster. The caster could create anything and even stretch time, making three days pass in the illusion while only a second passed in reality.
Three Thousand Phantom Worlds was different. Its space was a series of constantly generating and collapsing worlds, all driven by the victim's own thoughts and consciousness. The illusory world they were trapped in was created by their own imagination. The more they thought, the more complex the world became. This didn't mean they could escape by simply not thinking. The entrance and exit were controlled solely by the caster. Unless the caster released them, they were trapped forever.
It was less of a genjutsu and more of a spiritual prison.
Once a victim's mind was caged, their body in the real world would become like that of a vegetable. No one else could bring their spirit back.
However, Three Thousand Phantom Worlds was not invincible. Its first weakness was a massive gap in spiritual energy. Someone on the level of the Sage of Six Paths or an Otsutsuki could shatter the illusion. Its second weakness was that the caster had to use their own spiritual energy to maintain the prison. The amount required depended on the victim's own spiritual strength and willpower. Against an opponent with equal spiritual power and a strong will who saw through the illusion's nature, the caster might have to use up to 70% of their own spiritual energy to keep them trapped.
This would leave the caster with only 30% of their mind to control their own body, making them slow and vulnerable. But it still meant that in a one-on-one fight with no one else around, Zangetsu could trap his opponent's mind and then kill their defenseless body.
