Chapter 43 - CHAPTER 43 (S2)

"Come back here!~" the redhead shouted to us. And heck, ivy and the redhead really seemed like athletes. They were catching up to us and fast. As Ruby was at the back, she was losing stamina and it was evident. And eventually, she was within the reach of ivy..

But just as it seemed like Ruby was about to give out and get caught, Nicole instantly grabbed her wrist, forcing her legs to move up to Nicole's pace.

Eventually, the two we were running from started losing pace, we made two turns, momentarily losing them. We quickly ran into the apartment we were in before, and closed the door shut, locking it. We took a moment to catch our breath, I leaned against the kitchen counter, my head tilting back on the cupboard, Christian having his hands on his knees, bowing slightly. Nicole sat on a wooden chair and Ruby on the damn ground, her legs shaking slightly due to the impact. Christian after catching his breath walked over to the refrigerator, but didn't open it. He moved it, dragging it in front of the door, barricading it.

Rexine's pov:

I've explored this apartment whole now, and me personally? I'd keep this room. Why? Because it has a freaking soundproofed room! I've been sitting on the bed of the soundproofed room for at least 30 minutes now. It is a bit scary, since I have no idea what's going on outside. I mean, I'd have no idea if there were zombies outside or not. Well, on other matters.. I still don't know what to do. I mean, it's super dangerous If I risk going outside again. But, I think I could manage.. but not to mention the hallway to my right is a dead end, it's still risky as hell. I exhaled, deciding to take the risk. I'd rather find the rest including Maverick than not have a clue if they are even here now or not.

I got up, hopping off the bed. I quietly opened the door, looking outside. And thankfully nothing and no one. I walked out to the living room, and took a knife from the floor where it had been laying. Of course, it wasn't mine. It was just laying there. It was covered in blood, so I picked it up with a cloth.

I then silently walked over to the front door, opening it ever so slightly. I peeked, and saw no one, so I made a move on.

I exit out of the apartment, walking out into the hallway to my left. My footsteps were silent, as I walked through. I was about to take a right, when I heard muffled voices from the left. But not in the hallways, inside an apartment. I slowly and silently walked towards the voices, then stopped when I heard the source from an apartment. The door was open, but by a crack. Still, I could see inside.

I froze. Ivy...? I was seriously about to bust inside, but then heard her talk.

"Oh, my sister Rexine? She's pretty annoying.. but she loves me, so she'll probably pick me over friends." Ivy said. My eyes widened. I could feel tears prick at the corner of my eyes. No. No. Ivy wouldn't do this. She wouldn't. This isn't Ivy. She's just joking.

I slowly and quietly backed away.. I walked away, into a random room. I swung it open, meeting an empty room. I silently closed it, and slipped to the floor. No way.

I took a deep breath, gathering myself. Yeah, Ivy is just joking, obviously. I sighed slightly, and gave a low chuckle. I stood up and started to walk towards the door.

I opened it and exited, walking through an unfamiliar hallway. What I took note of was that one of the apartments had lights that I could see under the tiny crack of the door. I walked towards it, and opened the door. I was met with Perry, Ruby, Nicole and Christian. I closed the door behind me. They all seemed nervous, more than happy and relieved. But, I guess considering I haven't seen them in a few long hours, they have no way of knowing if I'm bitten or not..

"Hey.." I spoke up, breaking the thick silence. They all have an awkward smile.

Perry's pov:

"What's upp.." Christian replied awkwardly. It sucked, because there was no way of nicely or politely telling Rexine the bad news. Ruby seemed like she was going to puke, I felt pretty bad. I spoke up next.

"Hey.. we have to tell you something.." I spoke. I could hear Ruby gulp. Oh boy..

"What..?" Rexine asked. I looked away, stuffing my hands in my pockets.

"So.. Ivy, your sister.. we saw her. She was planning to join The organization. And when we were caught, they tried to get to us.. she's turning ba—"

"NO!" rexine yelled. She definitely didn't take that well..

Ruby spoke up this time. "You know we would never lie to y–"

"STOP! SHE'S JUST JOKING. SHE'LL COME BACK TO ME!" Rexine yelled. We felt bad for her. All of us were shut silent, and said nothing. A tear had fallen down Rexine's cheek, and she shoved past us and looked at Maverick on the table. She herself alone secured Maverick as she carried him in her arms, and walked back to the front door.

"Wait, Rexine!- PLEASE! We aren't lying.." Ruby begged. Her eyes welled with tears.

"SHUT UP! I trusted you, Ruby, the most. I don't want friends who lie to me." Rexine said with astoundable coldness.

"We aren't lying. Even if it hurts, real friends will tell the truth, Rex." Christian grabbed her wrist, preventing her from leaving and spoke. Rexine angrily shook his hand off her wrist, and gave a frustrated gaze.

"Then you aren't real friends. Because you're lying. Ivy would never do that.." rexine persisted..

"We'll help you, you know.. just believe us!-" Nicole insisted. He was looking at Rexine with some bit of hope, but Rexine didn't seem to buy it at all..

"Rexine, ple–" Poor Ruby, she got cut off short and Rexine instead spoke coldly.

"SHUT IT, Ruby. I don't want to hear anything from your annoying mouth." With that, Rexine left the apartment, carrying Maverick.

The door slammed shut. Everyone fell silent, especially Ruby. It was so silent that we could basically hear the zombies crowding the two that left, but did dare open the door again..
