SRT Special Academy.
The SRT stands for Special Response Team.
It was directly under the command of the current General Student Council President, possessing authority that transcended the conventional laws of Kivotos. Unlike the constrained Valkyrie Police School, it could operate freely in any academy's autonomous district.
Inside the virtual space of the Shittim Chest, I sat across from Arona, flipping through paper documents about SRT Special Academy, pondering Shiranui Kaya's true intentions.
"It's just like Schale," I muttered. "The biggest difference lies in its personnel composition."
The members of SRT were not loyal to the General Student Council, but only to the General Student Council President.
The president who was now missing.
"If I, as the head of Schale, were to recruit members of the President's personal special forces for my own use... Is she hoping I'll take over the President's military legacy? Or is she trying to paint me as part of the President's loyalist faction?"
"Uuu, Arona doesn't know."
Arona lay slumped on the table, unusually dejected. "Sensei is so amazing. I feel like I'm no help at all. If only I were smarter, uuu..."
I patted Arona's small head and smiled. "I only have a half-baked understanding of these things myself, just making guesses based on basic common sense. Besides, it's best if you just stay as cute as you are, Arona. You've already helped a lot by finding so much information."
"Ehehe Hey Don't mess up my hair, you meanie Sensei!"
Satisfied, I let go of Arona and continued my line of thought.
If I were to do something so unbelievably foolish, never mind what would happen to me, SRT would probably be disbanded on the spot and even subjected to a major purge—
If Schale really absorbed SRT, the military symbol of the General Student Council, and then found an ambitious corporation willing to provide financial and material support, I could directly take control of the D.U. by force today and reorganize the student council to airdrop a new president tomorrow.
I recalled a news report I saw earlier, where an SRT student expressed dissatisfaction with the Defense Office to the media. At the same time, SRT's existence did indeed encroach on some of the functions that originally belonged to the Defense Office.
It wasn't impossible that she was doing this to eliminate a thorn in her side and expand her own power.
But... was it really necessary?
"Arona, check the number of SRT's recent operations, after the president went missing."
"Okay, please wait a moment..."
Arona closed her eyes, the halo above her head morphing and flashing. After just a few seconds, she opened her eyes in surprise.
"Sensei! It's zero!"
"As I thought."
I placed the documents face down on the table. There was no need to look at them anymore.
"SRT is about to be shut down."
Correction to my earlier statement: the biggest difference between Schale and SRT, to be more precise, lies in their organizational structure.
The ability to freely recruit students from different academies, who may have originally been from opposing factions, is Schale's highest authority, and it also serves as a check on all of Schale's other powers.
Because of this, under normal circumstances, Schale can only serve as a supplement to the GSC and the various academy security forces, solving problems they are unable to attend to. It has authority, but it cannot infringe on any party's sovereignty. To do so would be to personally tear down the very foundation of its existence.
"Only when facing a crisis that threatens all of Kivotos, one that requires everyone to unite to overcome, can Schale fulfill its true purpose—as a bridge, as a bond, to integrate all integrable forces."
"You could say that Schale is an extension of Kivotos's collective will."
"In contrast, SRT is a blade, a blade belonging to the Student Council President."
"When the President was still here, she herself symbolized Kivotos. Therefore, no matter how sharp or dangerous this blade was forged, its edge was always pointed at the enemy."
"But now, the blade has lost its master, and also its direction."
"What's more, there is now a safer, more controlled replacement—"
Schale.
It's foreseeable that once Schale officially begins large-scale recruitment and achieves some success, the General Student Council will absolutely pass the proposal to abolish SRT at the fastest possible speed and transfer the former SRT students to other academies.
The most likely destination, of course, would be Valkyrie Police School, under the jurisdiction of a certain Defense Office Chief.
Damn it, what the hell is that bitch Shiranui Kaya trying to do!
What if some idiot who doesn't understand the situation and is emotionally attached to SRT finds out about the school's closure and blames me, the head of Schale, for it!
She's using me as bait to lure out the hotheads so she can catch them all in one net!
"Sensei is saying things I don't understand again."
"Simply put, the General Student Council President went missing, and now SRT is about to be abolished because of it."
After summarizing, I checked the time, said goodbye to Arona, and exited the virtual space.
Back in reality, I was sitting in the corner of a coffee shop. The drawn curtains blocked the gentle morning sun. On the table in front of me was half a glass of juice and a leftover donut.
For my taste buds, too many donuts were a bit cloying. As for why I ordered juice in a coffee shop... I'm not working, so why torture myself with coffee?
According to the information provided by Miss Kanna, who thought she was being anonymous but was easily identified as the only possible sender, the student named Nakatsukasa Kirino stops by this coffee shop during every patrol.
My plan was to use that profile, which painted the picture of a complete hot-blooded idiot, only as a reference, and make my decision after observing her in person.
Of course, I had already decided that as long as she basically matched the profile, I would extend an invitation to her.
Just like I invited Yuuka.
Speaking of which, I haven't seen Yuuka in two days... cough.
Although Kirino's personal ability assessment is arguably top-tier at Valkyrie—in the reverse direction, of course. Her catastrophic marksmanship and simply reckless personality make her the bottom of the class and a frequent troublemaker on the job.
However, Kirino's work ethic makes up for her lack of ability. With her passion for her job, she has diligently solved numerous problems for the residents of her responsible area, winning their praise.
This was probably why Kanna noticed Kirino and recommended her to me.
All in all, from my perspective, Kirino's situation met my requirements.
In Kivotos, there are only two situations that pose the greatest threat to my life:
Getting caught in a large-scale gunfight and being unable to escape in time.
Being physically restrained with no opportunity to call for outside help.
The combat strength of my bodyguard doesn't matter. As long as she can run with me under normal circumstances and call for backup to rescue me after escaping on her own in a crisis, that's enough.
The requirements were extremely low.
So, to hell with SRT and Kaya!
Thinking of this, I opened my phone and sent a MomoTalk to Kaya.
Me: I sincerely believe Kaya has the potential of a superman.
Kaya: !?
Kaya: What happened? Why the sudden change of heart!
Kaya: Sensei?
Kaya: Don't leave me in suspense!
Kaya: Please reply ASAP!!!
I couldn't be bothered with her and left her hanging for a while.
Kaya: Are you busy?
Kaya: Sorry, I may have disturbed you.
Kaya: Please don't think I'm that kind of clingy woman!
Kaya: By the way, um, I just remembered, SRT might not be very suitable after all.
Kaya: If you haven't gone yet, could you please forget what I said yesterday?
Kaya: I will arrange for other suitable bodyguard candidates for you!
Looking at these messages, I rubbed my eyes and began to doubt whether my previous deductions were wrong.
Wasn't I being sarcastic? Did she really think I was praising her? Could it be that I was actually overestimating this person's intelligence?
Could it be that Kaya is really just an ordinary fool?
So, I sent another probing message.
Me: Sorry, I was busy just now. Also, you don't need to trouble yourself with the bodyguard matter.
Kaya: Okay!
Kaya: If there's anything else I can help with, please don't hesitate to ask.
Kaya: Although I told you yesterday that I'm a bit of a figurehead, I'm still the Chief, after all.
Kaya: Sorry, I seem to have gotten carried away and said too much again.
Kaya: I won't disturb you any further for now.
Kaya: I look forward to our next meeting!
Staring at the flood of messages from Kaya, I fell into deep thought.
Given that I was overthinking it and Kaya is just an idiot, what was her real purpose in wanting me to contact SRT?
It was probably nothing good, anyway.
But why did Kaya suddenly change her mind now? I only said two sentences. What kind of reading comprehension did she perform?
I felt a twinge of sadness: perhaps, in my entire life, I will never be able to understand this world-shattering level of intellect.
I didn't reply to Kaya again. With a heavy heart, I downed my juice, emptied my mind, closed my eyes slightly, and leaned back against the sofa to take a light nap.
Enjoying the leisurely time of giving up on thinking, it wasn't until the customers in the shop had almost completely changed over that my target finally arrived.
"Boss! Two donuts, please!"
The unique beauty of a student, a voice full of energy, an innocent smile, and two long, slender white braids hanging down her back, giving off the feeling of a girl-next-door.
Most importantly, other than the halo on her head, she looked completely human.
My first impression of Kirino wasn't half bad.
