Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Shiranui Kaya is Enthusiastic and Kind

"Who are you calling Rin-chan?!"

Rin Nanagami's face darkened, her glasses glinting coldly.

"Sensei, as a mature adult and a role model for all the students of Kivotos, please refrain from using such a frivolous form of address."

The plan to naturally switch to an intimate nickname had failed.

"Uh, I understand, Rin."

"...Sigh. Let's get down to business first. You said just now that you want the General Student Council to assign you a personal guard." Rin's brow furrowed slightly as she paused. "Why?"

Of course it's because the local customs of you Kivotos people are so warm and hospitable, with freedom-loving gunfights happening every second, and where even hand grenades are classified as daily necessities you can buy at any roadside supermarket.

I tactfully expressed my concern for my personal safety.

"No, I meant to remind you that Schale can recruit any student you wish, regardless of their original affiliation. According to our investigation, a considerable number of students are interested in joining Schale. If you have such a need, you can hold an open recruitment and select the best candidates."

A good idea, except that for a large, formal club activity like a job fair, a notification is automatically sent to the student on duty to facilitate scheduling. If there is no student on duty that day, it gets sent to the previous one.

A very user-friendly design. So, let me see who has served as the student on duty for Schale so far:

Haha, so it's only been Yuuka.

In order to acquire trustworthy personnel without disturbing Yuuka, I could only seek help from Kivotos's official body, the General Student Council.

After I fobbed her off with "personal reasons," Rin fell silent for a moment before picking up her phone to make a call.

"Hello, Chief Shiranui, this is Acting President Rin Nanagami. The Sensei from Schale requires a personal bodyguard on short notice. Could you please see if... Yes, I know there's no precedent, and I know the difficulties the Defense Office is facing, especially now that the President is missing... Hm? Okay, I understand, I will inform him. Yes, the relevant application materials will be submitted as soon as possible."

After hanging up, Rin looked at me again.

"The Chief of the Defense Office, who is in charge of this matter, has agreed to do her best to arrange it for you, but she wishes to discuss the specific details with you in person. If that's alright, you can head over to the Defense Office Chief's office now. Chief Shiranui happens to be available."

"Thank you so much, Rin-chan!"

Rin gave me a "friendly" smile. "Who is Rin-chan, I wonder? Hehe. Since the matter is resolved, would a certain bored adult please leave now and not disturb others while they work."

Because Rin's expression was terrifying, I quickly thanked her again and fled. Rin, for her part, returned to her mountain of work.

Speaking of which, Rin looked exhausted. She had dark circles under her eyes. I wonder if she's been resting properly. I should bring her some nutritional supplements the next time I come to report on my work.

Soon, I arrived at the floor where the Defense Office was located. Led by a waiting member of the Defense Office, I came to the Chief's office.

"You must be the renowned Sensei from Schale!"

As soon as I walked in, a pink-haired girl with perpetually smiling, narrowed eyes enthusiastically hurried over to greet me, shake my hand, and introduce herself.

"I've heard so much about you. I am the Chief of the Defense Office, Shiranui Kaya. You can just call me Kaya. Please, have a seat. Let me make you some coffee. Is Blue Mountain okay?"

Kaya held my hand and pulled me to the sofa, then pressed down on my shoulders to make me sit.

I was a little overwhelmed by her fervent attitude, with only one thought in my mind: The texture of her gloves is amazing. The fabric must be high-end.

Kaya bustled around the coffee machine for a moment, then brought over two steaming cups of coffee and sat down opposite me.

I carefully took a sip. The aroma was rich and the taste slightly acidic. Even though I'm no coffee connoisseur, I could tell the quality was excellent.

"How is it? To be able to leisurely enjoy Blue Mountain coffee during a lunch break is the ultimate indulgence, isn't it?"

I nodded in agreement, my sharp eyes noticing the two characters for "Superman" printed on the side of Kaya's coffee mug. I secretly guessed she might be a fan of superhero comics.

"I am aware of the reason for your visit."

Kaya said regretfully, "Regarding the assignment of a private guard, I am very sorry. Due to the search for the missing Student Council President and the chaotic situation following her disappearance, the General Student Council is simply too short-staffed. However."

Kaya smiled, resting her right hand on her left elbow, her left index finger tapping lightly on her fair cheek.

"Valkyrie Police School, which is under the jurisdiction of the Defense Office, might be able to provide you with a suitable candidate. I have already sent a message to the Public Security Bureau Chief. For now, let's enjoy our delicious coffee while we wait for news~"

Coincidentally, just as Kaya finished speaking, a 'ding' sound came from her.

"Oh my, it seems I've received a reply~ Let me see..."

Kaya opened her phone, and her expression suddenly turned ugly. Her flat chest rose and fell faintly a few times before she forced another smile at me.

"I'm sorry, things have become a bit troublesome. Do you have time to take a trip to the Public Security Bureau with me right now?"

"Of course I do... but won't this affect your work this afternoon?"

"It's fine. I can just have my subordinates handle those trivial matters." Kaya stood up. "To me, your matter is the top priority, you know."

I was a bit touched, thinking that Shiranui Kaya was a really good aber— ahem, student.

Walking out of the Sanctum Tower side-by-side with Kaya, I was a little surprised to find that she intended to walk to our destination.

"I'm sorry, Sensei. The student council's manpower and resources are already stretched very thin. Even I can't use an official car and driver for private purposes. The Public Safety Bureau is only a half-hour walk from here, so please bear with me for a little while."

I was once again moved. What a good kid Kaya is!

And so, Kaya and I chatted as we walked, and she taught me a lot about chess and coffee.

Halfway there, I noticed Kaya's breathing suddenly became a bit ragged. She glanced up at the sun and complained coquettishly:

"I miscalculated. I didn't expect this afternoon's sun to be so fierce. Sensei I'm accompanying you on business under such a big sun, you have to treat me to ice cream after this, okay?"

What? A Kivotos student is afraid of the sun?

I was slightly taken aback, hitting a blind spot in my knowledge. Recalling the information I had gathered in recent days, there really wasn't any material that mentioned students being immune to direct sunlight.

"Sorry, wait here for a moment."

We happened to be in the cool shade cast by a large building. I told Kaya to stay put and quickly ran into a convenience store on the street. I bought what I needed at top speed and returned to her side.

Click.

I pressed the clasp, opening a long-handled umbrella and holding it over Kaya's head.

Kaya seemed a little surprised. Her squinted eyes opened slightly, revealing light green irises and goat-like rectangular pupils.

But the next moment, she returned to her smiling, squinted expression and said softly:

"Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Sensei."

I waved my hand. "It's what I should do."

For the rest of the journey, I held the umbrella for Kaya the entire way.

I don't know if it was my imagination, but her steps seemed to have become much lighter.
