Chapter 10: Hyde in the Shadows
The Nevermore woods were a black abyss, the canopy so thick that moonlight barely pierced it, casting slivers of silver on the forest floor. The air was heavy with pine and a feral musk that made Adam's skin prickle. He stalked beside Wednesday, her crossbow gleaming in her grip, her eyes scanning the dark like a predator's. His HUD glowed:
[System: 0 Ultimate Skill Cards. Active Skills: Ultimate Immortal Body, Ultimate Illusion Creation, Ultimate Lightning Body.]
A roar shattered the silence, raw and guttural, shaking the trees. Tyler Galpin, in Hyde form, burst from the shadows, a hulking mass of fur and muscle, claws glinting like knives, yellow eyes blazing with rage. Adam reacted, throwing up illusions—phantom Wednesdays scattering in all directions, their braids swaying, crossbows raised. The Hyde snarled, swiping at the fakes, its claws slashing through air. Adam unleashed lightning, a blue bolt striking its flank with a crackle, singeing fur. The beast roared, lunging, and its claws grazed Adam's arm, tearing through his jacket. Pain flared, sharp and hot, but his Immortal Body kicked in, flesh knitting instantly, leaving only a faint scar.
"Wrong day to play monster, pal," Adam taunted, dodging another swipe.
Wednesday fired, her bolts sinking deep into the Hyde's shoulder and thigh, black blood oozing. The beast staggered, its eyes flickering human for a moment—Tyler's eyes, pleading, desperate. "Help…" he rasped, voice barely audible, before the Hyde took over, and he fled, crashing through the underbrush.
Wednesday lowered her crossbow, her expression grim. "He's a pawn, not the king."
Adam nodded, his mind racing. This is the mid-season cliffhanger, and I'm stuck without spoilers. The fight was over, but the real battle was just beginning.
Back at Nevermore, Adam found Bianca in the courtyard, practicing her fencing. To lighten the mood, he conjured an illusion—her siren song audition turning into a comical screech-fest, her voice warping into a cartoonish wail. She glared, her amber eyes flashing, then laughed despite herself. "You're insufferable, Stiels."
Enid, buoyed by Adam's earlier blood, caught him in the dorms, her face alight. "I did it!" she said, holding up her hands—claws sprouting, sharp and curved. "Partial transformation!"
Adam grinned, pulling her into a hug. "Told you, Sinclair. You're a beast."
The night ended with questions, Tyler's escape a dark promise of more to come. In his dorm, Adam stared at the ceiling, moonlight casting shadows like claws. The Hyde's human plea echoed, and Laurel's name lingered, a puzzle piece just out of reach. "Like an MCU teaser with no post-credits scene," he muttered, sleep pulling him under.
