Chapter 12: Gates of Deception
The Nevermore basement was a catacomb of shadows, its stone corridors damp and cold, the air thick with the scent of mold, rusted iron, and a faint, acrid tang of chemicals that clung to the back of adam's throat. He crept beside Wednesday Addams, her crossbow gleaming in the faint glow of a lantern she carried, its beam slicing through the gloom like a surgical blade. Her dark eyes scanned every corner, her braids swaying with each measured step, her black dress absorbing the light. adam's HUD glowed faintly in his mind's eye:
[System: 0 Ultimate Skill Cards. Active Skills: Ultimate Immortal Body, Ultimate Illusion Creation, Ultimate Lightning Body.]
Laurel's journal had confirmed her as the Hyde's mastermind, and the Nightshades—adam, Wednesday, Bianca, Xavier—had tracked her to a hidden chamber beneath the school, guided by whispers of her experiments. adam's heart pounded, his crush on Wednesday a steady hum beneath the adrenaline, his sarcasm a shield against the danger. Boss fight time, and I'm the chaotic sidekick in this gothic RPG.
"Stay sharp," Wednesday whispered, her voice a cold, precise cut through the silence, her eyes flicking to him. "She's here, and she's dangerous."
adam nodded, his grin masking nerves. "Nice villain lair, but I've seen better in the MCU." He focused, the HUD flaring:
[System: Ultimate Illusion Creation Activated.]
An illusion of empty air cloaked the Nightshades as they approached a rusted iron door, its surface etched with glowing green wards that pulsed like a heartbeat. adam conjured a fake Laurel to "disarm" the wards, her hands tracing runes while he mimicked the motions with a stolen chalk, his fingers steady despite the magic's prickle on his skin. The door creaked open, revealing a chamber lit by flickering torches, their flames casting eerie shadows on shelves lined with vials, occult tomes, and a ritual circle carved into the stone floor, its runes glowing a malevolent red.
Laurel Gates stood at a table, her blonde hair glinting in the torchlight, her eyes wild with fervor as she mixed a glowing serum in a vial. "You're too late," she said, her voice sharp with triumph, not noticing their cloaked approach until adam dropped the illusion, the Nightshades materializing like specters.
"Nice villain monologue," adam taunted, lightning coiling around his arm like a blue serpent, crackling with energy. He unleashed a bolt, bright and sizzling, aimed at the table. Vials shattered, green serum splattering across the stone, and Laurel dodged, her movements quick and precise. She hurled a dagger that grazed adam's shoulder, pain flaring sharp and hot, but his Ultimate Immortal Body kicked in, the wound closing instantly, leaving a faint scar that throbbed briefly.
Wednesday fired her crossbow, a bolt sinking into Laurel's arm, blood dripping onto the ritual circle. Laurel snarled, her face twisting as she activated the circle, its runes flaring brighter, the air humming with power. adam conjured illusions of multiple Wednesdays, each aiming a crossbow, their braids swaying in sync, their dark eyes locked on Laurel. The confusion bought them time as Bianca's siren song echoed, a haunting melody that dazed Laurel, her movements slowing. Xavier's own illusions—phantom ravens with glowing eyes—swarmed, adding to the chaos, their wings beating like a storm.
"She's tied to Crackstone," Wednesday said, her voice cutting through the din, her crossbow steady. "The prophecy—she's summoning his power."
Laurel laughed, a cold, unhinged sound that echoed off the stone walls, and darted toward a secret passage behind a bookshelf, its entrance warded with a shimmering barrier. adam unleashed another lightning bolt, the blue arc crackling, but the ward absorbed it, glowing brighter. Laurel slipped through, the passage sealing with a grinding thud, dust raining from the ceiling.
"She's slippery," Wednesday said, lowering her crossbow, her eyes narrowing, "but we're gaining ground."
adam panted, his heart racing, nodding. Laurel's got plot armor thicker than Thanos, but I'm rewriting the finale.
Back in the quad, adam lightened the mood with a prank—an illusion of a haunted classroom, desks floating in midair, chalk scribbling "Beware the Hyde" in glowing red on the board. Principal Weems stormed in, her blonde hair disheveled, her face flushed with irritation as she tripped over a nonexistent chair, her papers scattering across the floor. Students in the hall snickered, and Wednesday's lips twitched, a rare smirk that felt like a trophy. adam caught her eye, his grin widening. Score one for chaos.
Bianca caught adam later in the corridor, her amber eyes appraising, her arms crossed. "You're chaotic, Stiels, but it works," she said, a faint smile breaking through. "That siren song took effort, you know."
"Teamwork makes the dream work," adam replied, winking. Nearby, Enid trained her werewolf reflexes, her claws flashing as she sparred with Ajax, her movements sharper with each pass. adam cheered, his voice carrying over the cobblestones. "Keep it up, Sinclair—you're giving Wolverine a run for his money!"
Enid grinned, her blue eyes flashing yellow. "Thanks, adam!"
In his dorm, adam sprawled on his lumpy mattress, moonlight spilling through a cracked window, casting claw-like shadows on the stone walls. Laurel's escape and the ritual circle gnawed at him, Crackstone's prophecy a puzzle piece he couldn't place. His memories—Tyler, Laurel, a larger plan—remained frustratingly blurry, like a corrupted file in a game he couldn't save. "Like an MCU cliffhanger with no post-credits scene," he muttered, checking the HUD:
[System: 0 Ultimate Skill Cards. Active Skills: Ultimate Immortal Body, Ultimate Illusion Creation, Ultimate Lightning Body.]
He was all in now, tied to Wednesday's hunt, to Nevermore's darkness. "Time to flip the script," he murmured, his voice soft as sleep claimed him, the moonlight fading into shadow.
