Silence filled the room for a few seconds after Camila's words. Jacob's eyes widened in shock, as if the words hadn't registered in his mind at first. But he snapped out of it the moment he saw her writhing in pain. He rushed to her side, cupping her face in his trembling hands, panic written all over his features.
"Camila, hold on. I'm taking you to the hospital right now!" he said in a shaken voice, hurrying to grab the car keys.
He didn't waste a single second. He grabbed the hospital bag Camila had prepared days ago and came back to help her stand. His heart was pounding wildly while Camila clutched her belly, trying to breathe through the pain.
Once they reached the car, he opened the door carefully and helped her in, then rushed to the driver's seat and took off at full speed toward the hospital. His hand reached for hers whenever he could, trying to calm her down — though he was the one who needed comfort.
"I'm here, Camila... I'm right here. Just breathe. Everything's going to be okay."
But the sound of her rapid, shallow breaths filled him with dread. He pressed the gas pedal harder, desperately praying they'd make it in time.
Meanwhile, the phone in the back seat kept buzzing non-stop. It was Emma calling, but Jacob couldn't focus on anything other than getting to the hospital. Nothing mattered more.
Finally, the car screeched to a halt at the emergency entrance. Jacob jumped out and ran to her side, helping her out just as the medical team rushed over with a stretcher.
"My wife is going into labor!" he yelled, his voice shaking, as they moved her inside.
He held her hand until the very last second, his heart tearing with fear. He looked at her pale face and the pain in her eyes, feeling a tight knot form in his chest.
"Jacob... don't leave me," she whispered weakly, squeezing his hand.
He leaned down, kissed her forehead gently, and whispered near her ear, "I'm here, and I'll stay with you... until the end."
As they wheeled her into the delivery room, Jacob stood outside, running his hand through his hair in anxious frustration. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves, but his heart was pounding like a drum.
Just then, his phone buzzed again — but this time, it wasn't just a call. It was a message from Emma:
"Jacob, where are you? I woke up suddenly and felt like something's not right..."
He looked at the delivery room door, then back at the phone in his hand — and deep down, he knew this night was far from over...
