Cass froze mid-step.
That bastard Alpha.
What the hell was he trying to pull? Wasn't staring at him all lesson long enough?
He couldn't help it he spoke up, voice sharp.
"How am I with your group?"
"You mean?" Kai—yes, that bastard of an Alpha had the audacity to answer his question with a question.
Cass ground his teeth. "I mean, you said we could choose the group we wanted, right? Not you choosing for us. So why did you pick me without even giving me a choice, huh?"
Kai's lips pulled into a slow grin, like he was wondering if Cass even knew his place. But then, remembering his goal he replied smoothly, "Of course I said that. But Alphas can also pick who they want in their team. And unless refused, that choice stands. I, Kai, choose you to complete our team. You have no choice."
The smugness in his tone made Cass's blood heat.
The fact that no one around spoke up for him, that they all just… watched silently? That made it worse.
See why he hated Alphas? See why he hated the whole damned Omegaverse system?
Unfair for Omegas. Fair and convenient for Alphas.
How dare they get to do whatever they wanted.
He wanted to argue. Oh, he really wanted to. But the silent, unbothered stares around the room told him this was how things worked here. He bit back the urge to snap and instead walked stiffly toward his so-called group.
When all the grouping was done, the rules of the "game" were explained in casual conversation. Each group needed at least one Alpha to lead. Each would enter a temporarily created dungeon to retrieve a unique artifact belonging to that dungeon—only one existed per run. Whoever got to it first would win… or whatever.
The artifact would help those who hadn't awakened yet awaken—greatly, in most cases. And the awakened could still benefit from it.
When the shimmering portals appeared, teams began stepping in one by one. Cass followed reluctantly with his group, every step making him feel more like this was a mistake.
The dungeon experience was… something else. He'd never been in one before. Its shifting corridors, strange landscapes, and thick, almost suffocating energy were unlike anything he'd ever seen. He made a mental note: after awakening, he needed to learn how to do this dungeon stuff properly.
From the start, he kept his guard high, watching the others' movements, refusing to turn his back. He didn't trust them. Not yet. Maybe not ever.
When the group split up to search individually, Cass ended up unfortunately stuck with Kai.
The Alpha tried to break the icy silence. "You know, acting so wary around me isn't necessary."
Cass scoffed. "Acting wary around horny Alphas is absolutely necessary."
Kai chuckled like Cass was overreacting. "You're overthinking everything. I know you're unawakened. If you had joined another group, it would've been bad for you too much competition for the artifact. I wanted to help you out. That's why I picked you. Everyone in my group is already awakened. We're not here to fight over it."
Cass eyed him suspiciously. Was he… close to the original Cass? He wasn't sure. But the fact that Kai knew his name and rank without asking… it raised questions.
Still, he wasn't going to swallow that story without poking at it. "So why would you want to help me?"
Kai's answer came without hesitation. "Guess I'm just feeling generous today."
Cass hummed in acknowledgment, but inwardly, his suspicion didn't fade. That distant, almost hidden look of lust in Kai's eyes was impossible to miss.
Still… despite the wariness, Cass had to admit he was in over his head here. He'd never been in a dungeon, and even if he knew what to do, his current physical state was weak.
When he voiced this concern, Kai simply smirked. "Already figured that out too."
He pulled out his phone, tapping something in. Moments later, Cass's device buzzed.
"A map," Kai said. "A detailed path straight to the artifact. Follow it, and it's yours."
Cass blinked. So he had a map… Heck of course he did. The bastard had created this dungeon anyway. And fine, maybe this was helpful.
But hell no, this didn't change the fact that this "adventure" was rigged. He bit down on the retort bubbling up in his throat.
Calm down, Cass. Take the help, get the artifact, awaken this body… and never see this man again.
He forced a small smile. "Thanks."
Kai accepted it with a curt nod before striding away, leaving Cass staring at his back, suspicion gnawing at him. Something was off about this entire situation, seriously off but without proof, he had nothing.
Fine. He'd play along. For now.
Following the map, Cass trekked deeper into the dungeon, wary eyes scanning every shadow. The path twisted and turned, crystal lights casting eerie reflections on the damp stone. His body protested with every step, a constant reminder of how close he still was to collapsing.
One thing gnawed at him, he hadn't crossed paths with a single group member. Not one. Not a single soul. And that only made him more uneasy.
At last, the glowing marker on the map pulsed, signaling he was close.
Finally, the map's path ended in front of a door.
Cass exhaled in relief. Had he really made it?
His sour mood evaporated instantly. If this item really could help him awaken, then maybe—just maybe—this weak state would finally lessen.
Excitement flared in his chest…
But then—
What the hell was that sound?
He froze, tilting his head, listening.
His eyes widened.
No way.
Was that… moaning?
