Chapter 57 - Chapter 57

It was late at night in the Davidson estate. Chucks walked along one of the neat lawn paths toward the exit, his face set in a hard frown, not glancing back. Out of the bushes ahead, Tyler stepped into view, arms crossed.

"Get out of my way," Chucks muttered, voice tight with anger.

"Take it easy," Tyler said. "Doing this alone won't solve anything. You're just gonna get yourself killed."

"How's that your problem?" Chucks shot back, glaring. "This is my mission. I have to do it."

He tried to shove past, but Sophia's voice called out. She had followed them.

"Chucks, let us help."

"I didn't ask for your help," Chucks said flatly.

"Well then," Tyler said, glancing around, "I'll just tell the council you went off alone when your pack wasn't on patrol just because you've got a grudge with a vampire. I'd love to see what Mr. Jack says about that."

Chucks froze, eyes narrowing. "Don't you dare."

"Then let us come," Sophia pressed. "Please."

After a pause, Chucks gave in. "Alright. But stay sharp."

Sophia grinned, and the three slipped out through the estate gates.

After a brief walk, they crossed into the dense forest.

"So, how does this vampire look?" Sophia asked.

"He's got these crazy pink eyes," Chucks said. "And if you're not paying attention, you might mistake him for a girl."

"Any powers?" Tyler asked, brushing his fingers over a tree trunk.

"Fast reflexes. Blue orb projection," Chucks replied.

"What makes you think we'll find him?" Sophia asked.

"He might get thirsty and come out looking for food," Chucks said. "Fall right into our hands."

Tyler glanced at him. Chucks was usually the talkative one, always joking or trying to make people laugh. But right now, he was different quiet, tense. It made sense; the vampire had injured Emily and Marcel, left others badly hurt. Chucks was angry, but coming out here alone was like walking into a death trap.

"I can smell him," Chucks said suddenly, halting.

They stopped. The three of them tensed, scanning the trees and sky.

A voice came from above. "You came out here again."

A vampire dropped to the ground with a heavy thud. His features were almost feminine, but his voice was unmistakably male. His pink eyes nearly matched the pale color of his hair.

He grinned. "You brought friends, I see."

"What you did to the previous pack," Tyler said, stepping forward, eyes darkening, "we'll double it for you."

The vampire let out a rumbling laugh.

"Do you really think you're any match for me?"

"That doesn't have anything to do with us," Sophia replied, her voice like steel. "All I know is you're going down."

"Alright then," the vampire sneered. "Try and stop me."

In a blur, he hurled two massive, blue-glowing orbs toward them.

The wolves moved as one dodging in perfect sync, their bodies twisting mid-air before their forms rippled and shifted.

Purple. Ash-gray. Black.

Their fur caught the light as they landed, muscles coiled for attack.

They dashed for him.

The vampire lunged, flinging more orbs. Wherever they struck, fire erupted, hissing across the forest floor.

The wolves darted through the flames, reacting with lightning instinct.

Tyler slammed into the vampire's chest, forcing him to the ground.

Chucks charged in next, jaws snapping, sending the vampire crashing into a tree.

The vampire rose, laughing.

"Quick, huh? Well… I can get quicker."

He blurred becoming a streak of motion and unleashed a storm of spiraling orbs.

One struck Chucks hard, sending him sprawling.

Sophia darted forward, but the vampire launched another orb that caught her mid-stride, knocking her aside.

Tyler lunged again. The vampire met him with a brutal kick, slamming him into a tree trunk.

Gosh… his speed increased, Tyler thought, wincing.

Chucks regained his footing and dashed in once more.

The vampire, impossibly fast, tore across the space and struck him with a massive orb, blasting him into the ground with a bone-shaking crash.

Tyler and Sophia moved in together.

Sophia struck first, flinging the vampire aside with raw force.

Tyler followed, sinking his fangs deep and slamming the vampire onto the hard earth.

A pained groan escaped the creature.

But he staggered back to his feet, grinning.

"What makes you think you wolves will win? I've lived for fifty years, and in all that time, no wolf has come close to defeating a Chief Council member, all the wolves who tried perished except a few."

His eyes darkened.

"What makes you think you can defeat Susun?"

Chucks stepped forward. His movement blurred into pure brutality, and in a single, devastating strike, he crushed the vampire to instantaneous death.

Silence fell.

Chucks looked to Tyler ran to the forest then shifted back into human form. Sophia and Tyler followed, the sound of bones cracking and fur receding filling the air.

"Thanks, guys," Chucks said.

"Don't thank us," Tyler replied coldly. "That vampire gave up. He chose to die rather than keep fighting."

"How do you know?" Chucks asked.

"Tyler is right, he did so because he believed the vampires will win this war," Sophia answered quietly. "He thought humans would be crushed. To him, there was no point in fighting."

"Pathetic loser," Chucks muttered.

Tyler's gaze drifted toward the shadowed forest.

"We only have one mission one passed down from our forefathers for generations. Stop Susun… before he stops the sun, or conquers it. As long as Susun exists, humanity walks a razor's edge."

True Sophia said, if we don't stop Susun soon enough all we do would be in vain, my grandfather mission has always been to stop him, he harbours all the evil never seen in any vampire lord, he would do anything to make sure he achieves his dream. Constantine may have not ended him but it doesn't mean someone can't.

Chucks bowed his head to the hard ground underneath him, I don't know about him, but if stopping him makes humanity safe, then he shouldn't survive anymore, he sighed. Our father's couldn't stop him, it makes me think most times that we don't stand a chance, what do you think Tyler he said glancing at him

His eyes lingered in the trees, as though someone something was watching.
