The mansion was silent when Kael stepped inside.
He crossed the living room—and stopped. Evelyn was curled up on the couch, fast asleep, her breathing soft and steady.
Something about the sight of her so still, so unguarded made his wolf stir with a deep, almost aching need to be closer.
He moved toward her without thinking, crouching beside the couch. His fingers brushed lightly through her hair, and at that touch, her eyes fluttered open.
"You're back," she murmured.
His expression hardened slightly. "Why are you lying here? Wait! Were you waiting for me?"
She straightened, blinking. "No, of course not."she replied But then her gaze snagged on the dark stain across his white shirt. "Is that… blood?"
"He turned to look at where she pointed it must've splashed," he said casually in his head.
Her eyes narrowed. "Did you get into a fight?"
Kael gave a low, humorless chuckle. "Do you think I would waste my time fighting fragile humans?"
"Then why is there a blood stain on your shirt?"
"It's nothing andwhy can't you ever shut up." His tone left no space for more questions.
She opened her mouth to press further—but suddenly he scooped her into his arms, lifting her effortlessly in a bridal hold.
"Kael! What are you doing? Put me down—"
She wriggled, but his grip was unyielding. "Keep still, or you'll wake Lily."
He carried her up the stairs and into her room, finally setting her on the bed.
"Next time," he said, his voice low and edged, "learn to shut your mouth."
Ur so annoying Mr Draven" she said out loud.
Actually I think prefer Mr Arrogant, Mrs Draven"
Don't call me that"
"Why, Aren't you my wife?
Stop the noise! Lily's little voice said with her hands covering her ears.
I'm sorry, Mr Arrogant was just trying to piss me off" Evelyn muttered to Lily.
Without waiting for her reply, he turned and walked to his own room, his wolf still growling in satisfaction from having touched her.
Why do you always argue with our mate' his wolf snapped in his head.
Shut up!
