Evelyn sat curled in the corner of the massive bed, knees pulled to her chest, eyes fixed on the locked door. Her throat was raw from shouting, her heart still pounding from the rough trip here.

She didn't know how long had passed before she heard it — the deep, deliberate sound of heavy boots on polished marble. The footsteps grew louder, closer, until they stopped just outside the door.

Her breath caught.

The door didn't open. Instead, she heard a low growl — not loud, but deep enough that it vibrated in the air.

Kael Voss had returned.

In the hallway, the Alpha stood still, his broad shoulders tense. His wolf, Draven, was clawing at the edges of his control, restless and eager.

She's here. The wolf's voice was raw in his mind, sharp with hunger. Ours.

Kael clenched his jaw. His scent was probably already seeping into the room, teasing her human senses, but he refused to step inside. Not yet.

He didn't want to startle her more than she already was. And truthfully, he didn't trust himself not to frighten her.

Go to her, Draven snarled.

"No," Kael muttered under his breath, voice like ice. "Not tonight."

Kael stepped inside, shutting the door behind him with a quiet click because his wolf will not stop reminding him She's here.

Her chest tightened, and she shot to her feet. "Why me?!" she shouted, her voice breaking. "Why are you doing this to me? I don't even know you!"

His gaze didn't waver. Calm. Dark. Unreadable. "Something in me likes you," he said simply, his deep voice low and unhurried. "That's all the reason I need."

"That's not a reason!" she cried, hot tears spilling over again.

Inside him, Draven growled impatiently. She's hurting. Make her stop.

Kael's jaw tightened. He took one step forward, his shadow falling over her. "Calm down, Evelyn," he ordered, his voice like silk wrapped around steel.

Her hands balled into fists. "Don't tell me what to do. Just—just leave!"

His eyes darkened, his wolf pushing against his control. Every instinct screamed to close the space between them, to pull her into him until the scent of her was all he breathed.
