MHGA Chapter 211 – David, Sold as a Package Deal!
"..."
"Maine, are you sure this job is legit?" Dorio eyed the chaotic surroundings, glancing toward Maine. "That Afterlife Queen actually went out of her way to recommend a client to us… That just doesn't sit right with me."
At the moment, Maine and Dorio were sitting in a booth in a bar.
The messy, noisy atmosphere was far from ideal for discussing business.
Just earlier, Rogue had contacted Maine directly, saying she had a job to refer to their Edgerunner crew.
But the meeting spot the client chose… was this chaotic bar booth.
It was even a bit cramped for someone with Maine's large frame—he looked like he'd been squeezed into the seat.
When the appointed time came, Maine and Dorio finally saw the so-called client—
Just as Rogue described, he walked over wearing… a bizarre eel-head helmet.
The strange eel-shaped helmet swayed with the man's movements as he walked. It was so long, you could spot it clearly even from dozens of meters away in the crowd.
In an instant, Maine and Dorio understood what Rogue meant when she said "you won't forget that ridiculous helmet after seeing it once."
The Wiggling Eel bobbed his head all the way to their booth.
Trailing behind him was a young man in a yellow jacket who looked clearly nervous—he kept glancing at Maine and Dorio.
"Hello there."
The Wiggling Eel sat down directly across from them and began to introduce himself.
"Looks like you've been waiting for a while. I'm the client. I've got a job for you."
"Hold it." Dorio raised a hand to block Maine beside her and stared warily at Kairo Retsu.
"You came to us on purpose, didn't you? I don't believe our reputation's big enough to make someone reach out through the Afterlife Queen just to find us…"
Dorio scrutinized the Wiggling Eel.
"Why exactly did you seek us out? What kind of job are you pushing?"
"Of course it's a good gig." Kairo smiled.
"What? Don't trust me? Wondering why I came to you?"
"Before we talk about any of that, how about you take off that ridiculous helmet?" Dorio glared at him.
Maine tensed up, clearly expressing he felt the same.
"That's too much! How can you say it's ridiculous?!" Kairo protested.
"This is a highly sought-after collectible among Hunters! The Wiggling Eel is a symbol of area-wide compassion!"
Even as he said this, he removed the helmet, revealing his face.
"You?!" Maine immediately grew alert.
Anyone who frequented the Afterlife recognized that face—
The weirdo who carried crates of fresh milk there every day, the guy who provoked Rogue herself, and brought along his gang of "do-gooders" to play nice in Night City.
"What the hell do you want?"
Maine slammed a fist on the table, glaring.
"You want us to help old ladies cross the street or something?"
"It's Scav-related." Kairo pulled a small box from his coat and popped a candy cigarette in his mouth.
"Lately we've been cleaning up gang activity. A few leftover Scavs are still running around, so I figured I'd hire some capable folks to finish the job."
"And the reason you came to us?" Dorio glanced at David as well.
"And who's this kid?"
"He's the reason I came to you," Kairo said.
"Maine… A while back, didn't you do a deal with Gloria Martinez for a Sandevistan?"
"That Sandevistan? It's installed in him." Kairo pointed directly.
Maine's expression turned aggressive, thinking Kairo was trying to provoke him.
With his Gorilla Arms and Projectile Launch System, he immediately reached out to grab Kairo—
"You messing with me?!"
"Let me finish."
Before Maine's hand could reach him, Kairo caught it mid-air and slammed it down on the table, locking him in place.
"His name is David Martinez. Gloria's son. Gloria was caught in a crossfire a few days ago and got shot."
Kairo locked eyes with Maine while they arm-wrestled with their cybernetics, completely unfazed.
"I came here today to resolve this. That's why I brought him to you."
"What happened exactly? What about Gloria?" Maine pulled back after realizing he was losing the power contest.
"And what's your connection to this kid?"
"My mom… there was a gang fight in the street. She got hit in the crossfire…" David grit his teeth.
"She was taken to the hospital… but that place was run by Scavs."
"!"
Maine and Dorio both frowned with sympathy.
"No worries, we saved Gloria," Kairo interjected, steering the conversation.
"During our raid on the Scavs, we got her out."
"We saved David's mother. He's already got the Sandevistan installed… and I like him." Kairo said with complete sincerity.
"So I want to help him. First order of business—the Sandevistan."
Kairo placed both hands on the table like a Guildmaster giving orders.
"I don't think handing him a wad of eddies does any good. So what do you think—"
"How about I let him work for you?"
"He's a rare talent."
"Hah?" Maine scowled.
"You think this is a daycare? I don't babysit punk kids…"
Before Maine could finish, David suddenly vanished in short bursts—
And before him appeared a poured drink, a plate of snacks, and even a pack of gum from a convenience store outside the bar.
"I can do this!" David looked straight into Maine's eyes.
"I won't let you down!"
That instantly shut Maine up.
That kid… just used Sandevistan multiple times like it was nothing?!
"Alright." Maine said in a low voice.
"But I'm going to test him."
"Deal." Kairo extended his hand.
"You won't be disappointed. David's a freshly baked Gunlance prodigy."
Kairo grinned.
"As for the job I want you to take…"
"It's simple—when we go hunting, I just want the hunting grounds a little cleaner."
