Chapter 19 - Versatile

"How was the mission, did you encounter any problems?"

Nyx asked, settling into her seat.

In front of her was Reo, standing with his usual neutral expression.

"It went well, the beast was only Rank 1 and even then, in the earlier stages, when we encountered it we saw it devouring the body just so it could keep itself alive."

The PRU members that had been killed were only ordinary non-awakened members, otherwise they would have been able to deal with the beast the moment it showed itself.

"And you dealt with it?"

Nyx asked.

"Raven dealt with it."

Reo clarified.

"Oh, so it was that weak."

"Yes."

Reo gave a short bow, then left without another word.

Raven was already at the door as Reo left.

"How did your first mission go?"

Nyx's gaze swept over him, there wasn't any evidence that he had just undergone a mission, except for the axe that he held.

"It went well."

Raven replied.

He went forward and dropped the small axe on Nyx's table.

"No?"

Nyx question.

"No."

Raven affirmed.

Nyx was the one that asked him if he would like a weapon.

That was two days ago.

And in the span of two days, Raven had tried a sword, a spear, and now an axe.

Raven had originally thought that having a sword would be cool, after all, the novel's protagonist used a sword as well.

However, when he got it, Raven realized two things: The sword was far heavier than he had expected, and he couldn't switch it out as easily as he had thought he would be.

He didn't have muscle. He was more of an agility-based fighter anyway.

The spear just felt weird for him.

And the small axe he actually had no problem with it, he just didn't think it suited him.

It just didn't feel right when he swung it at that beast.

"What kind of weapon do you want?"

Nyx asked.

"A versatile one."

The answer came out smoothly as if practiced. Raven had just said this so many times that he just knew what and how to say it.

"Your definition of versatile is quite.... special, but I'll see if I can find anything that fits the description."

"Thank you."

Raven turned to leave.

Suddenly, he stopped dead in his tracks.

"Nyx, when does the academy resume?"

He asked, suddenly remembering.

"Exactly a week from now."

Nyx replied.

"Oh."

His hand went to the doorknob, opening the door before he stepped through.

'A whole week, back then I thought it was just days left.'

Raven shook his head.

He still had some time left.

And he would make the most out of it.

….

The next day, Raven woke up with aches all over his body.

He had grown used to this.

Light filtered through the curtains of the apartment, warming the quiet quarters he had grown used to.

Raven dragged himself off the mat despite wanting to lie down for a little bit longer, had a quick bath, and quickly went into a set of his uniform.

'I guess she left early today.'

It was surprising to see that Nyx didn't serve him food.

He had to admit that he grown a little too used to getting served food as soon as he woke up.

'I don't think I even want to cook for myself.'

He avoided the kitchen.

Raven's cooking had always been atrocious, even though he followed all the steps. The only reason he even ate the food he cooked was because eating outside was too expensive.

"How are you feeling?"

The voice caught him off-guard.

He hadn't even felt that she was there, yet he saw her in the living room.

Nyx sat on the sofa, drinking a cup of tea. She wore casual clothing-just simple slacks and a plain shirt, her hair tied into a bun.

"I feel fine."

"The doctor said your sense of smell might be limited for awhile."

"...."

During their sparring yesterday, Nyx had hit him with a punch.

Normally, a punch would have hurt a lot, but it wouldn't have much of a lasting effect, save for a few aches here and there.

That was under normal circumstances. This time, when she punched him, she had aimed for his head, the blow landing on his nose.

'Oh, that would explain the food on the dining table.'

Nyx stood up, walking over to him.

"Here."

And then handed him a weapon.

It was a dagger.

He blinked.

It wasn't flashy. There were no golden engravings, no gems, nothing that seemed the make the weapon look better than it really was.

It was just a simple weapon—a sleek black hilt wrapped in dark leather and a blade with a faint curve.

"There aren't much weapons that fit the description, you'll have to manage this."

She explained.

She then went back to the sofa and picked her cup of tea back up.

'Nyx is much taller than me.'

"Thank you."

He said.

The dagger in his grip felt like the sword in a way, yet it felt different, it was hard for Raven to describe.

"How does it feel?"

Nyx asked.

"If I may ask first, how much was it?"

"It cost more than your debt."

She replied.

"It feels.... okay."

He admitted.

It was lighter than the sword due to its size, and it didn't feel as bad as the spear or as awkward as the axe.

'Seems light enough.'

"Can we eat?"

A few minutes later, Nyx left the apartment. She told Raven that she had to go on a mission before leaving, giving him the keys before she left.

'Work in casual clothing?'

Raven mused.

'That would be nice.'

Unfortunately for him, he didn't have any casual clothing. His wardrobe—the one that he shared with Nyx, was filled with PRU uniform for every day of the week, and a suit.

"I suppose I should head out as well."

Raven said to himself.

He had a weapon to test, after all.
