Chapter 2 - A New Day

As the rays of the sun's light slowly began to flow in through his open window and the songs of the birds outside began to reach his ears, Adam opened his eyes and rubbed them a bit with his hands. He took in a deep breath and sat up in bed. His lips curled into a smile as he glanced over at the window to see the morning sun shining into his bedroom. He stood up from his bed and stretched his back by reaching up towards the ceiling and then bending over to touch his toes. Once he stood up again, he paced over to his bedside window and gently unlocked the hatch and lifted it open.

The bright golden sunlight washed over him in its warm embrace, meanwhile the fresh cool breeze of the wind allowed for the scent of freshly cut grass to enter into Adam's room. The bright spring morning was a sight to behold. Adam simply stared out at it for five minutes straight, basking in its beauty. But even if he wanted to, he couldn't stare forever. He shut the window mostly, leaving it only slightly cracked open as he walked out of his bedroom and down the stairs to his kitchen. There, he opened his refrigerator and grabbed an unopened carton of fresh eggs. He placed it on the kitchen counter and grabbed a pan from one of his cupboards and turned on the stove top.

After allowing the stove to heat up to a reasonable temperature, Adam plucked an egg from the carton and gently knocked it against the side of the pan three times. The soft shell of the egg gave way as the yoke fell into the pan and immediately began to sizzle. This process would repeat two more times as Adam prepared his breakfast. He took a whisk from a small side drawer and began to mix the eggs thoroughly, making sure to make them fluffy without over mixing them.

After cooking the eggs for around eight minutes, Adam switched off his stove and gently guided the eggs onto a large plate. He grabbed a hold of two shakers of salt and pepper respectively and began to season his meal. Once the eggs were seasoned enough to his liking, Adam took the plate from the kitchen counter and placed it on the table before sitting down. Before he began to eat however, Adam closed his eyes and bowed his head.

"Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you dearly for blessing me with yet another day of life and a warm meal to start it. Amen."

Adam opened his eyes and raised his head. He grabbed a fork to the right of his plate and finally began to enjoy his nutritious meal, making sure to savour the taste of every bite. The taste of the eggs made Adam's mouth water, he almost stopped eating just to marvel at his cooking skills for a few minutes.

This is incredible.

Adam finished the last bite of his breakfast and placed his fork atop his plate before placing it in the kitchen sink to wash it. While doing so, he glimpsed outside to his back yard at a miniature garden he had planted a month and a half ago. The first signs of his plants had just started to emerge from the earth. A subtle smile formed on Adam's face as he laid eyes on his new plants.

"About time,"

he said with a playful tone, grabbing a soft white rag to dry the plate with before placing it back into a hanging cupboard.

Adam paced over to the back door and picked up a small watering can. As he opened the door and stepped outside, the warm light of the sun immediately touched his skin. Adam took a deep breath of the fresh spring air before placing his watering can below the hose valve. He gently turned the valve just enough for a steady stream of water to begin flowing. As the water flowed, Adam glanced up at the bright blue sky. The faint pale clouds moved gently across the sky as a flock of geese flew directly overhead in their classic V formation. Adam smiled at the sight before cutting the water flow from the faucet. He bent down and picked up the watering can and carried it over to the garden. The faint green sprouts had begun to emerge from under the soil, Adam tilted the watering can ever so slightly as small streams of water began to rain down on the tiny sprouts, showering them with fresh clean water. As Adam watered the crops, the soil turned dark from the moisture soaking in.

If only everything could be this simple. Just a man and his plants.

Adam's gaze drew from his small garden back up to the bright blue morning sky. His wide smile began to subtly fade the longer he stared.

Life is brilliant and beautiful, but all of this is nothing more than a tiny speck in the face of God's true creation. I guess in some way that makes it more beautiful, but…

Adam's thoughts were interrupted as he quickly glanced down and saw that he'd been so absorbed in thought he had over-watered his plants.

"Oh Shoot!"

Adam quickly stepped back and set the watering can down. He knelt down to stare at his small garden, his once bright and cheerful smile had since vanished. Replaced with an expression of surprise and a hint of remorse. His small garden had been flooded due to his own lack of attention. Adam exhaled a sigh of mild frustration as he stood back up, and continued to gaze up at the sky. His face now straight with a hint of curiosity.

What if God never wanted us to see it?

Adam shook his head and took in a deep breath before pacing back inside his house. He knew better than to stand around outside all day, he needed to head off to work soon.

Once inside again, Adam headed upstairs once again to his bedroom. Making sure to close the curtains to his window and close the door behind him, before opening his closet door and picking out a nice white button down shirt from its hanger. He slid both of his arms through the respective sleeves of the shirt and brought it up to his shoulders as he began to carefully slide each plastic button through its slot. Adam glanced at himself in the bedroom mirror as he adjusted the collar of his shirt, making sure it fit but wasn't too tight around his neck.

He parted his hair slightly and stood up a bit straighter, smiling to his reflection. After sliding into his black pants, Adam tightened the belt around his waist and gave his reflection one more look. He stood in front of the large mirror with his hands behind his back, looking himself up and down.

I'm ready

Adam adjusted his hair slightly one more time before walking out of his room.

Tonight's gonna be something to remember.

Adam walked down the stairs and to the front door of his house. He turned the deadbolt lock to the side and opened the door. He stepped outside into the warm spring sun once again, before making sure to lock the door. As soon as it clicked, Adam pulled his key from the lock and unlocked the driver's side door on his car. Adam glanced up at the sky once again as his smile subtly dropped.

Before he could stare for too long however, Adam simply turned his head away and walked to his car and opened the door. He sat down and placed his key into the ignition as he shut the door and slowly backed out of his driveway before driving off from his house.

During his drive, Adam turned on the radio to pass the time.

"This afternoon will be clear skies with no clouds and moving into the evening and nighttime we're still gonna be looking at clear skies with a temperature of around fiftysix degrees. Tomorrow morning however you're gonna be looking at a slight chance of rain around twenty percent."

"Thanks very much Max, now coming up next we've got a very special song that'll make you wanna fly hehehehe. This is "Fly with the Stars."

Adam rhythmically tapped his fingers against the steering wheel and bobbed his head to the beat as the world around him flew past as he sped up, eventually reaching the entrance ramp for the highway. Adam flipped on his turn signal and sped up the ramp. Once on the highway, Adam swallowed and gripped the wheel tightly.

This is gonna be my first time using one of these, it can't be too different right?

Adam's palms began to sweat slightly as he drew closer and closer to his destination. Other drivers on the highway began passing him without any thought as Adam unintentionally slowed down, the car's engine quieting down along with it. The radio was all that Adam could focus on for the moment, the quiet music set his nerves at ease as he loosened his grip on the wheel and sped back up to sixty miles an hour.

It'll be alright, you're just overreacting. This'll be amazing.

Adam's smile returned as he reached his exit ramp. He signaled to the right and slowed down as his car descended towards the traffic light. As he stopped before the red light, Adam glanced over at the large white sign with bold black letters directly to his right, "Stargazer Observatory Next Right." Adam grabbed the knob of the radio and turned it to silence it, now the only sound accompanying him was the sound of the car's engine and his own thoughts.

God's true creation.

The static red light turned to a bright green as Adam took a sharp right turn and began following down the small side road, eventually Adam spotted the large round dome of the building just barely reaching over the tree line. He approached slowly, almost with caution as soon as he laid eyes on the building. He felt as if the weight of the whole world was suddenly upon his chest. Adam's breaths were quick and shortened, like those of panic. Yet the wide smile on his face told a much different story.

The young man unfastened his seatbelt and slowly stepped out of his vehicle. The immense dome of the observatory loomed over him, although the dome was closed, Adam stared at it, mesmerized. Adam took his first steps towards the observatory, his heart pounding with anticipation.

This building is all that stands between us and everything.
