Chapter 10 - Part 1 Chapter 9 Grapes

Fiona found that Kai could eat grapes.

That night Kai was curled up in bed, so hungry that he had no strength left. These days he only drank water and Fiona bought some glucose solution from the drugstore. Kai would vomit when he drank glucose. Fiona later added it bit by bit to the water, and Kai was able to drink it with difficulty.

That night Kai fell asleep and Fiona sat by the bed eating grapes. The grapes were bought from the supermarket, along with a lot of food, but Kai didn't even glance at them. Kai was asleep, looking pitiful, his body curled up like a shrimp, with one hand on his stomach as if squeezing would make his empty stomach fuller, and his brows furrowed as if he were thinking about what to eat in his sleep. Fiona, who was sitting beside him, felt heartbroken.

Kai and Fiona were back in the school dormitory, and the dormitory janitor, as usual, had locked the door and gone home. They went in and out through an open window every day.

It's now the fifth day of Kai's anorexia, and during these five days they've almost walked through every street and alley in the city, hoping to find something to stimulate Kai's appetite. But whenever he went to a fancy restaurant or a street food stall, Kai showed his aversion without exception. The delicious food became something he detested deeply, and the few times he managed to squeeze something into his mouth, he would vomit non-stop as if he had eaten poison.

At this point, Jett's advice to the two of them was to inform Kai's family and ask them to take Kai to a big hospital in the provincial capital or the capital for treatment. Kai and Fiona did nothing about it, and when they got back to the dormitory, they looked at each other in silence, Kai looked even more depressed and fell asleep. Fiona was sulking beside her, not knowing why Kai was so stubborn that he wouldn't tell his family about such a big thing.

Kai and Fiona have had many arguments over this matter.

The situation of Kai's family, Fiona has only heard him mention a few things sporadically. All she knew was that his family was not well-off, that he was the only son, and that his parents had him when they were over forty, so they doted on him. Now the old man and his wife have retired and are not in good health. This summer Kai said he didn't want to go home. Fiona initially thought it was Kai who didn't want to leave her, so she called home and said that he was traveling with his classmates during the summer vacation and might come back a little later. Later, Kai developed anorexia and it got worse. At this point, Kai still didn't want to go home and didn't even want to tell his family about what had happened, which made Fiona wonder.

Both Fiona and Kai were straightforward people who said whatever was on their minds, so Fiona didn't shy away from it and blurted out her doubts right away. Kai seemed to be very shy about the topic, looking impatient. "If you get bored, you can buy a ticket to go home tomorrow," he said. Fiona is spoiled and spoiled at home, and when she's with Kai, it's mostly Kai who gives in to her. This time Kai's one word really annoyed her, and she immediately threw a cup and was about to run away. So flustered that Kai hurriedly hugged her and kept saying sorry.

In fact, Fiona was only angry about what he had said. Now that he had apologized and he was so hungry that he looked so weak, she could not bear to torture him any longer, so she calmed down and did not hold it against him.

The matter was over, but for the next two days, seeing Kai getting weaker and weaker, Fiona couldn't help saying twice that she wanted to tell his parents. Each time Kai interrupted her in a gruff voice, looking extremely impatient. Even when Fiona quarreled with him, he stopped giving in.

Fiona left in a huff and rushed back to her dormitory to pack up, really ready to go to the station at once to buy a ticket home. At that moment, she saw Kai standing at the bottom of the dormitory building, staring blankly at her window. Kai looked so dejected and, having been hungry for these days, he seemed unable to even stand. His appearance softened Fiona's heart and she couldn't bring herself to do it. Fiona rushed downstairs and hugged Kai. Kai held her tightly too, so tightly that she could sense his inner bewilderment.

Fiona never mentioned telling his family about his illness again, but the confusion in her heart never dissipated.

That night Kai fell asleep and Fiona sat by the bedside, looking at him with pity.

Fiona was eating grapes, not to eat, but to have something to do. Fiona eats grapes by peeling them off one by one, then putting them in her mouth and sipping them slowly. While eating the grapes, Fiona's mind was filled with the fact that Kai didn't eat, so she was a little confused and a little scared.

Fiona wondered if Kai was going to die.

The first time the idea of death came into Fiona's mind, it left her so confused. She looked at Kai in his sleep again, and tears welled up in her eyes and slid down silently.

Fiona and Kai are the kind of students who are particularly mischievous and usually seem carefree. When they come together, they seem to be a perfect match in others' eyes. Fiona really likes Kai too, and she feels happy with him all the time. Kai always has a carefree look and is particularly smart, learning everything faster than others. His way of pursuing Fiona is also very special. He has secretly bribed five of Fiona's roommates without her realizing it, and then every move of Fiona is under his control. Fiona was so proud that she didn't take him seriously at first, but the girls in her dormitory kept talking about Kai in front of her for no reason, which aroused her curiosity. She was also a smart person, and when she saw the girls in her room doing things for Kai, she wondered how Kai had managed to bribe the people around him. Later, as she got to know Kai more, she was influenced by his personality. Kai was a man who could bring joy to people, and he didn't need to deliberately bribe anyone.

But now, the happy Kai could no longer be happy. In just a few days, he was like a completely different person, hungry to the point of turning his face green. The most important thing is that he doesn't know how long this situation will last.

Fiona thought for a moment, shed two tears, and finished the bag of grapes.

She looked again at Kai, whose lips were pale and parched. Fiona subconsciously brought a newly peeled grape to his mouth, intending to moisten his lips, but the moment the flesh of the grape touched his lips, his upper and lower lips parted and he held the grape in his mouth. With a little bit of chewing, the grape was swallowed.

Fiona didn't pay much attention at first. Kai had eaten the grapes in her hand, and she then peeled off another one. Before the next one was finished, she realized - Kai was ready to eat. Fiona got excited and, to verify it, brought the grapes to Kai's mouth again. The grapes were still eaten smoothly, and there was no unusual look on Kai's face.

Fiona perked up and fed Kai the few remaining grapes in the bag.

Then, without waking Kai up, Fiona rushed out of the door. It wasn't long before she came back, carrying three bags of grapes. More than half an hour later, all three bags of grapes were in Kai's stomach. Kai was still in a deep sleep, but the frown that had been tightly furrowed in his sleep was now much more relaxed.

Fiona had a smug look on her face, as if she had done something great. She lay down beside Kai and stared at him, laughing as she looked. She thought she should tell Jett the news and took out her phone to call him.

Jett was glad to hear the news and said he would buy grapes to see Kai early tomorrow morning.

 Jett dreamed of fire again.

The black fire was burning fiercely on the hillside, and in a short time it occupied Jett's entire dream. The gaze in the dream moved non-stop, and Jett didn't know what he was looking for. The flames danced like snakes, but on closer inspection they had shapes.

The flames were like walls of fire.

It really looks like a wall of fire. The flames burned neatly in rows, and occasionally some fireballs dropped and flew around in the wind, but this did not affect the order of the fire burning in the slightest. They were neatly arranged in rows, spaced about a meter apart, and as far as the eye could see, they were so dense that there was no boundary.

A world of fire. Black fire.

The line of sight still weaves through the walls of fire, with a somewhat shaky feeling as if evading the scorching heat of the fire. Moving faster and faster, there was still only fire in sight, burning black flames.

It was already dusk, and the sky above the flames could be seen, with black clouds slowly descending. Black fire, black clouds, separated by some bluish-white colors. And the bluish-white is being swallowed up by the black. Jett suddenly realized in his dream that perhaps the movement of his gaze was not seeking but fleeing.

He woke up, drenched in sweat.

Jett was in a daze during the night, feeling as if there was something he couldn't wait to do, but he didn't know what it was. It was really a bad thing. Jett was filled with a force that was about to burst forth, but there was no outlet for that force.

Knowing that he would never be able to sleep again, Jett got out of bed, intending to run a few laps on the playground, but now the playground was full of people seeking refuge from the earthquake, and the variously shaped shelters looked like plump mushrooms in the night.

Jett went to the stands on the west side of the playground and did frog jumps on the steps.

He couldn't remember how many times he had jumped up and down. It wasn't until his legs were filled with lead and so heavy that he could no longer jump that he sat down on the steps, exhausted.

The night wind blew, and a chill was felt on his sweaty body. The night sky was a deep blue, but the clouds were black. Large masses of clouds swirled in the sky, entangled in strands. Some stars, bright and dim, were scattered among them, like the eyes of the sky.

Jett returned to the dormitory from the audio-visual center very late almost every night, but he couldn't remember if he had looked at the sky so closely. That night he was so absorbed that he simply lay on his back on the steps.

The stars, either still or twinkling, soon became hazy in Jett's eyes. The hazy starlight gradually transformed into some strange shapes, which dazed Jett's mind and inevitably masked some sleepiness. Jett's sweaty body, though dried by the wind, was still sticky and uncomfortable. But Jett was too tired and he didn't want to go back to the dormitory. He thought, just sleep like that.

The faint starlight was still changing its shape, and at one moment, Jett saw a mountain, a vineyard that stretched as far as the eye could see. The early summer sun refracted from behind the mountain, and on the neatly arranged grapevines, all the branches, leaves and fruits were bathed in a layer of light. In the open space between the grapevines stood a girl in a floor-length white dress, and a faint ray of sunlight fell on her face, adding a touch of brilliance to her fair complexion.

Before she was fully awake, Jett suddenly turned over and sat up.

He finally remembered why the black flames burning in his dream had a sense of deja vu. The flames were burning in the vineyard, and all his impressions of the vineyard came from a girl called Forget-your-worries Grass.

 Forget-your-worries. Cold Moon Village.

Jett remembered that the forget-your-worries grass hadn't been online for two days.
