Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Information Gathering

William emerged from the tent, assisted by Twinkletooth, a man named for his gleaming golden molar. Twinkletooth claimed he kept it as a last resort, a way to pay for a proper burial when the time came. William found the man repulsive—not just because the idea was bizarre but also because it was utterly foolish. Still, it sparked a question in his mind.

"What is your world like, Mr. Twinkletooth?" William asked, suspecting that perhaps not everyone came from the same Earth—some might hail from entirely different planets.

Twinkletooth stared at William as if he had just heard the dumbest thing ever. He said, "Same as yours. I used to watch streams of my favorite Ourtuber when I was there. Those were such nice days, weren't they?"

William tried to mask his disgust but failed, his face contorting at the words. Luckily, Twinkletooth was too lost in his nostalgia to notice.

'Seriously?! Nice days for who? Those streamers raking in millions? Ugh, what kind of life did this guy even live?'

Twinkletooth was still rambling, "I like this streamer, CakeOH. Dude was funny and hilarious, do you know once he..."

Before Twinkletooth could push William to the brink of losing his mind, William walked away. Oblivious, Twinkletooth continued.

Fortunately, he managed to escape.

Previously, when the kid mentioned he needed to reveal his class to join, William quickly narrowed it down to Bran, Agatha, or Eric. If it was Eric, he wouldn't reveal it, but Agatha, he would. Both had a strong chance of being members, yet also the weakest. Agatha had deliberately distanced herself, which was clear, but what if things had changed? Eric seemed the most likely. He was timid and needed support, making him eager to join. But would Jonathan and his team accept someone who had barely survived a wolf attack, nearly died, and endangered his teammates? And why not Bran? He had revealed his class as soon as he awakened. It didn't matter—any one of the three betraying him would ruin his plan.

And the rest were automatically removed from the suspect list, as his former teammates were too cautious to share such information. Especially Elisa—there was a look in her eyes that hinted at deep suffering, and she seemed resolute in avoiding it again, opting to keep her distance.

Even though he couldn't figure out who it was, it wasn't all bad. He learned something new about his skill, reconnaissance. When he activated both his vulnerability scanner and reconnaissance, the vulnerability scanner strangely didn't identify any vulnerabilities. There had to be a hidden mechanism behind this, though William was unaware of it for now. However, reconnaissance, it allowed him to see other people's statuses.

He could see the status of everyone present there, and the most fascinating part was that it also revealed something else, something hidden—their jobs and talents. Perhaps even they weren't aware of it, as the status, when called out, doesn't display both of them.

Now, William managed to sneak a peek at the status of the members present in the planning hut.

Name: Jonathan Swartz

Class: Paladin

Job: Hero

Talent: Deathless

-----------------------------------

William was too shocked by Jonathan's stats; if not for his ability to suppress his reaction, he might have painted a target on his own back. Because of this, he could only focus on seeing William's status, other he had to give up.

William was puzzled by the mysterious "???" equipment he couldn't perceive. He also wondered what the talent Deathless meant. Most intriguingly, the Regressor skill confirmed his suspicion—Jonathan definitely wasn't an ordinary guy.

"Job Hero, well, I saw that coming," William muttered. Unfortunately, he couldn't check the descriptions of Hero, Deathless, or any of the skills, and he regretted that. If he had taken his chances, he might have risked alerting Jonathan, and this mysterious man with monstrous stats coming up behind him was a nightmare he couldn't keep.

But most of all, he regretted not being able to see the others' status, as knowledge meant survival in this new world.

'There was always another time.' William not only tested his skill but also confirmed that his ability, for now, didn't alert others when activated. Unlike Agatha, whose ability created sound waves announcing its activation, William's was silent. Nobody could suspect anything was amiss. This made William wonder, 'Are there abilities similar to mine that can hide their activation process? Assassins could have such powers.' The very thought sent a shiver down his spine.

----------------------

William soon arrived at the clearing, where a small, empty hut stood. It was recently built, but its previous inhabitants had not returned from their long journey, leaving it vacant and now assigned to William. Perhaps they never would.

The hut was made of branches, with the leaves still attached to provide shade, though they would soon dry out. It was spacious enough to fit three people, but for now, William would be alone—and he liked it that way.

Inside, he discovered some leftover furniture, including what looked like a rudimentary bed. Sitting on its edge, he eagerly activated his status, keen to check his job and talents.

He felt the mana coursing through his veins. The system given to trial participants let them use magic and skills linked to their status with just a thought, as long as their mana reserves were enough.

Soon a window was pop up in front of him, William activated reconnaissance to see the difference in status.

William clicked on the job description: Someone capable of breaking everything in the world.

"Too vague. What does it mean by that? Am I a child throwing a tantrum?"

William looked at the talent and clicked its description. It read: Efficient in finding weaknesses.

William scratched his head. "Why does it look like my CV?" he muttered.

Was that a good thing? Probably not. He still remembered getting roasted during his internship because of his CV.
