Chapter 25 - New Faces, New Town

A day later, Abigail is resting in bed after the blood transfusion as Savannah walks up and takes her hand. Rachel is looking out into a pack of infected as Moses approaches.

Moses: Hey....

Rachel turns her head to Moses.

Rachel: Hey....

Moses: Can I join you?

Rachel raises her hand out, then Moses approaches and stands next to Rachel.

Moses: Feel that winter breeze....winter was never my favorite season. Too much snow....but as a really kid, I loved building a snowman....

Rachel: We should take them out. Those infected.

Moses: Them? Nah...it's a small pack. They'll go away sometime soon.

Rachel: We can take em out. I can.....

Moses: Rachel....

Rachel: What?

Moses gently touches Rachel's shoulder.

Moses: She's alive....they both are.

Rachel sighs.

Rachel: She's my best friend. The first best friend I've ever had and she wanted to feel like she belonged. The day I met her, she betrayed her former group, this biker gang called the Reapers. They were bad people, but she wasn't. Rocky found her and they both joined us. She might not ever wake up.

Moses: She saved Cassandra. She's alive, because of her.

Rachel sheds a tear for the loss of her closest friend, before Moses puts a hand over her shoulder. Rachel turns and smiles at Moses.

Rachel: Least I still I have you.

Moses: Yeah....you do...and when Abigail wakes up in this new place, we'll tell her all about it.

Rachel kisses Moses passionately. Margaret watches the teens from afar and sighs at this, before Margaret twists her lips, before walking away, before bumping into Rocky, who offers alcohol.

Rocky: It'll take you off the edge.....

Margaret: Will it?

Rocky: No....but the route you're going, it'll push you to the edge.....Hey....you've still got your friends.

Margaret sighs, before walking off as Rocky takes another swig of his alcohol. Anna is walking around just as Peter is smiling.

Peter: You're walking again....

Anna: Yeah...Kayla did a great job fixing my ankle....I like her...

On a rainy night, the survivors are resting for the night with James and Cassandra sitting on the hood of a car. James hands Cassandra a bottle of water.

James: How are you feeling?

Cassandra: A lot better than I did for the past few months.....this medicine really did its job.

James: Yeah...it did.

Cassandra gives a look as James notices.

James: What?

Cassandra: Nothing....

James: Cassandra....that's not a nothing look.

Cassandra: How would you know?

James: You've called me on my bullshit before. Now I'm calling you on yours.

Cassandra: Alright, you got me.

James: What is it?

Cassandra: When I was.....gone for a while....I saw my family....my Dad....my Mom....Blake and Maya....Uncle Zed...I almost joined them, but then my Dad told me to turn around and come back to you....because this family needed more.

Cassandra looks at James, smirking.

Cassandra: Said that you needed me more.

Cassandra sighs.

Cassandra: Abigail....I treated her so bad when I first met her. I almost killed her....if you hadn't stopped me...if I had....She saved my life and I tried to kill her.

James: She's still alive, Cassandra.

Cassandra: But she's in a coma and might not wake up....

James: I know....let's hope this Berrington is worth it.

Cassandra looks down and shakes her head. James takes Cassandra's hand. Meanwhile, Sarah approaches Kyle.

Sarah: Hey....

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: Hey.....

Sarah: You want to tell me what's on your mind?

Kyle: Abigail....she shouldn't have gone after the medicine. She's just a kid.

Sarah nods.

Sarah: I know....I treated her cruel when I first met her.....

Kyle and Sarah sit for a while.

Sarah: Kyle....Peter and Anna might be legit....You know Abigail wanted us to give it a shot....she's in a coma, Kyle....and when.....or if she wakes up, it should be in a new home.

Kyle sighs.

Sarah: They helped you get the medicine back to Cassandra. She's alive because of them. They're good people and where they're from, there are more good people....people like us.

Kyle thinks for a moment.

Kyle: I think that's what Joseph was trying to tell me.....that there's good people still out there if I had just have faith. Believe.....

Sarah: We've got to, Kyle.....

Later on, the survivors are discussing the matter of Berrington, with the photos laid out with Peter and Anna leaning to the side.

Shawn: So, what? We're supposed to just trust these two? Because they brought you back and showed you a bunch of pictures?

Rocky: Yeah....how do we know these people aren't dangerous?

James sighs.

James: Or if it's another trap.....

Sarah: Kyle....they did get you back....

Cassandra: And they brought the medicine back.....the medicine that saved my life....the rest of that medicine could not only help us, but that community they're from.

Margaret: It can't help all of us....

Kyle sighs.

Rachel: Kyle, why wouldn't we go? I mean, they could've robbed and killed you, but they didn't....plus Anna has a broken ankle.

Sarah: Peter and Anna aren't lying....

Sarah looks around at the survivors.

Sarah: And they don't want to hurt us. We need this.....Guys, Abigail is in a coma.....I can't live like this. Going from state to state, living on a train....trying to survive.....she'll have a better chance at surviving in this place.

Kayla: She's right, Kyle.....Sanctuary was different. They just spoke on a radio with no proof of safety. These photos are proof that we'll be safe.....plus, Savannah....she needs a chance to live a good life. This place has a school....she can learn...instead of just surviving.

Cassandra: We will be safe.

James raises his head.

Cassandra: James....I almost died....and honestly, I'm tired of this.....I want to at least live in a house.....in a bed...it's worth a shot....we can't be a married couple on a train.

Chris: I don't know, man....This might finally be it.

Rocky: Plus, we'd finally get toilets.....nice clean toilets.

Chris: Man, you just asked if these people are dangerous.

Rocky: Yeah...but a house always has a toilet.

After some thinking, Kyle then nods.

Kyle: Okay....let's go to Berrington.

Later on, Kyle is checking the engine of the Myrmidon when Sarah walks up.

Kyle: You okay?

Sarah: When you said we're going to Berrington, were you serious? Or are you trying to get them to tell you where their camp is?

Kyle stands up.

Kyle: We're going. Yes.

Sarah: Whatever it takes to get there, as long as we get there.

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: When Colin, Dante, Walter and....Harry brought me into Cratersville, what do you think of me at first?

Sarah: That you were dangerous.

Kyle: And what did you think when we rode to Midtown Manhattan?

Sarah: They might be dangerous....but they might not be.

Kyle: Tomorrow, we'll be at their gates. Without seeing inside those walls, I'm going to have to make a choice to bring this family into a community that might be dangerous. Thing is; I want to see for myself if this is the right choice.

Days later, the Myrmidon is driving on the railroad towards their destination, eventually stopping at an abandoned train station that had cars surrounding it. The survivors exit with Peter and Anna. Chris and Rocky carry the unconscious Abigail on a gurney.

Peter: This is it.....

Peter turns to Kyle.

Peter: Berrington's not that far now. Come on.

Peter and Anna lead the survivors on foot towards a large, heavily gated community, surrounded by a metal wall. At first, Kyle hears nothing inside the walls, but really concentrating, Kyle hears children laughing and people talking. Kyle then turns to Sarah, smiling.

Sarah: Told you....this might be it.

The survivors turn to each other, shocked.

James: You hear that?

Cassandra: Yeah...I do.

Shawn: Now, that's a noise I haven't heard in a long time.

Caleb: Son of a bitch.

The survivors approach the gate as it opens as they are greeted by a middle-aged Caucasian-American man bearing a grey beard.

Brigg: Anna....

Brigg turns to Peter.

Peter: It's okay....

Anna: Uncle Brigg. It's fine.

After some hesitation, Kyle and the survivors are brought it as the gates close behind them.

Peter: We've got two injured.

Brigg tilts his head to notice the unconscious Abigail on a gurney.

Brigg: She can be taken to our nurse and examined....As for the rest of you....before this goes any further, you all have to turn in your guns. That's the rule; if you stay, no guns.

Kyle: We don't know if we want to stay.

Peter: It's okay, Brigg.

Kyle: If we were gonna use them, we would've started already.

Peter: Just let them talk to Laura first.

Rocky: Who the fuck is Laura?

Peter: She's our community leader and she'll tell you all you want to know about this place.

Peter turns to Kyle.

Peter: Kyle, you're the leader. Why don't go first?

Kyle turns to the survivors, before spotting an infected outside the gate.

Kyle: Margaret....

Margaret turns her head.

Margaret: I got it.

Margaret pulls out her silenced sniper rifle and shoots the infected, shocking Brigg.

Brigg: Holy shit....

Brigg, Peter and Anna lead Kyle and the survivors around as most of the Berrington residents stare at the survivors, whispering about their appearance and their weapons. Later on, Kyle is in a very nice house, looking at the items on the shelves, the TVs, stacked books, well-made couches. Then, an elderly African-American woman enters the living room.

Laura: Hello, young man. I'm Laura Burns.

Kyle turns to Laura.

Kyle: Kyle Desipich.

Laura: The famous Kyle Desipich. I've heard of your story from all across the wasteland. Fascinating.....Do you mind if I film this?

Kyle: What?

Laura: Do you mind if I film this?

Kyle: No, I don't mind.

Kyle looks out the window at the heavily built wall of Berrington. Kyle then looks around the living room, before back at Laura, who offers a seat.

Laura: Please....sit, son.

Uneasy at first, Kyle eventually sits down.

Laura: How long have you and your people been out there?

Kyle: Since the start....

Laura: Did you all know each other before or-

Kyle: No, we didn't.

Kyle then gives Laura a look.

Laura: I was an attorney. Brooklyn....How old are you?

Kyle: Thirty-two.....

Laura: So you born after, then.....what did you do? Job wise?

Kyle: Does it matter? You know my story.

Laura: It does matter, son.....

Kyle looks around.

Kyle: What is this place? It's almost like the nukes never touched it.

Laura: This is the beginning. The nukes nor the God's fist weapon never did touch this place. My family and I, my husband and daughter, found this place and rebuild it.....my daughter met her husband and they have a child. My grandson. It had its own solar panels, cisterns, eco-based sewage filtration....

Kyle: How'd you put up the wall?

Laura smiles.

Laura: There was a Home Depot nearby and my husband, Kale, is a professor of architecture....and who he was mattered quite a bite. He got the first plates up with my son-in-law, Josh and after weeks, more people showed up....we had help and we built a strong community.

Kyle: You've been behind these walls for thirty-three years?

Laura: We need survivors who have been out there long. People like you and your people. Your group is the first you've even considered we've taken in for a long time, son.

Kyle: So, what's with the camera?

Laura: For research purposes, son. I want to look back on this to make sure I made the right choice by letting you and your people in.

Kyle: You think you are?

Laura: Well, that's what I want to know. Though I hear a great deal about you, I still want to take precautions.....for my family and for the families here.

Kyle: You should keep your gates closed.....not take chances.

Laura: Why?

Kyle: Because out there, it's not just about living.....it's about surviving....and that means having to watch people you love die.....your enemy will do whatever and kill what you have....who you love....to get what they want.....so I ask; are you sure about letting me and my people in?

Laura sighs.

Laura: I want to, because you're already looking after this place. Peter says I can trust you.

Kyle: Peter doesn't know shit about me. I've killed people.....I've lost count of how many I've killed...but I understand why they're dead, so those people out there, my family, all those people with me can live. So I can live.

Laura: Sounds like you've built a good family out there....strong people.....and I've done things, too.

Kyle: What have you done?

Laura: I....I've made choices that I'm not proud of....but it was all to keep this community safe....choices that have gotten people killed.

Kyle stands up and turns to the window.

Kyle: What are you asking of me?

Laura stands up and approaches Kyle.

Laura: Look at these families out here. Built families.....I've seen your built family, Kyle. They're not all blood related neither do they look alike, but you still care about them. These families should be in a community where they can raise their children. Your wife....those teenage girls...that teenage boy....and that little girl. We have schools with very good teachers....What I want? I want you to help us live...and I know you can do that. Hell, boy, you once led a gang of killers against the doors of Kronos and won. You lead your friends across the wasteland to put an end to the Krens and the Condemned....so I know you can do it.

Kyle: How?

Laura: I am very good at reading people...especially at poker.

Kyle scoffs.

Laura: I understand your distrust....you're skeptical....

Kyle looks down at the floor.

Kyle: I was a Zeus Corps Soldier.

Laura: Yeah....I couldn't just tell from the stories I've heard....but from the way you carry yourself

Shortly after the interview, Abigail is resting in the nursery with Rachel and Moses present while the nurse, Dennis, is present.

Dennis: You guys are lucky....shit, she's lucky. Not everyone gets to be in a coma after being exposed to so much radiation.

Moses: But she's gonna make it?

Dennis: She needs a few days rest....but only time will tell. She's gonna be okay, though.

Rachel: That's good...

Later on, Kyle, Shawn, James, Sarah, Cassandra, Caleb, Rocky, Margaret, Rachel, Moses, Kayla and Chris turn in their weapons with Savannah holding Kayla's hand, before she speaks in sign language.

Savannah: Are we going to stay here, Kayla?

Kayla: (sign language) I think we are, honey....

Laura: Your weapons are still yours. You can check them out whenever you go beyond the wall...but inside here, you store them for safety.

Later on, Peter presents two houses to Kyle, with Sarah present.

Kyle: You gave us two houses?

Peter: To do with as you please....I'd call dibs on the bigger one. It's got a nice shower....Look, I know you're still unsure of us, but I'm glad you came. Anyway, Laura's asked to give you your space so you're not too overwhelmed. Take your time. Explore. Get a feel for the place. You need anything. Give me a call....Uh...sorry...we don't have phones. I'm two houses down.

Kyle and Sarah enter the house and are in awe with the fresh picture carriers, furniture and layout of the kitchen. Sarah turns on the sink and rinses her hand with the water, smiling.

Sarah: Haven't had hot water in a while.....

Kyle smirks, then later on, takes a shower himself, the best feeling he's had in a while. Kyle then looks at himself in the mirror, looking at his beard for a moment. Kyle then looks down at the shaving products, before using them to shave his beard off, giving him a clean face. Shortly afterwards, there's a knock at the door. Putting on some jeans, Kyle opens the door to notice a young Caucasian-American woman with brown hair, carrying a basket of toiletries, plates and other accessories.

Alicia: Hi, I work in the pantry. Laura asked me to hand these over to you and your friends.

Alicia hands Kyle the basket.

Kyle: Thank you.....we're just cleaning up.

Alicia: Yeah...I see you cut yourself shaving....plus, you've got some shaving cream...just about...right...

Kyle gets the shaving cream off his chin with his shoulder.

Alicia: My name is Alicia, by the way.

Kyle: Kyle...

Alicia: You know, I used to be a barber....Well, my sister handed me her barber skills at least. I can give you a haircut if you want.

Kyle stares at Alicia for a long time.

Kyle: You don't even know who I am.

Alicia: You don't look that threatening....even with that scar.

Later on, Alicia is using an electric razor to give Kyle a fresh haircut.

Kyle: You said you had a sister.

Alicia: I did....I had two twin sisters, Melanie and Colleen. They both died last year. Infected.

Kyle: Sorry to hear that....I had a brother.....Died a long time ago...

Alicia: How long have you and your wife been married?

Kyle: Twelve years.

Alicia: Wow....that is a long time....and Rachel...how long have you two had her?

Kyle: She's not ours.....she's a friend.

Alicia: Ah, I see. Well, do you and your wife have any children of your own?

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: We did....

Alicia stops cutting Kyle's hair, giving a saddened look.

Alicia: I'm so sorry.

Kyle doesn't speak for a moment.

Kyle: Electricity, showers, haircuts.....feels like the times of the old world.....

Alicia: Haircuts were never going away, honey.

Kyle shuts his eyes.

Alicia: I understand if you're not okay with this yet....it takes time.

After finally cutting Kyle's hair, Alicia sets the razor down.

Alicia: There you go. Brand new man.

Alicia hands Kyle the mirror as he looks over himself. In Laura's house, Shawn is being interviewed.

Laura: So, you and Kyle have been best friends since childhood?

Shawn: Yeah...we served in Zeus Corps together and sometimes, run this crew together.

Laura: And you have a little brother, too?

Shawn: Yeah....Kyle, James and I are the main ones that make the decisions...

Laura: Shawn, do you want to be here?

Shawn: These people deserve a roof....especially the two kids we got with us.

Sarah is interviewed next.

Sarah: If this is how you're claiming it is then this is what's best for this. We're ready for this.

Laura: All of you?

Sarah sighs, before answering.

Sarah: Yes....all of us.

Rachel is interviewed next.

Laura: You're quite brave, young lady.

Rachel: Yeah....I've been with Kyle and his people for almost a year now.

Rachel looks around.

Rachel: This place....my friend, Abigail, hopefully she'll wake up soon enough to see it.

Laura: She will. Sounds like you really admire Kyle.

Rachel: Kyle saved me from a lot of bad things....including my Dad.

Laura: I'm sorry you lost your Dad.

Rachel: I didn't just lose him. I killed him. I had to.

Caleb is interviewed next.

Caleb: I'm from Canada, originally. I had a sister. We both ended up in the states not too long after my parents died....then a few years later, she died. I miss that girl every day.

James is interviewed next.

James: We need to make this work.

Laura: Why?

James: Cause we've been out there too long and almost lost ourselves to the wasteland.

Laura: Kyle tells me you're the brains of the group, but from what I've seen you're also the most compassionate.

James sighs, then looks down.

James: It's all there is to keep me alive.

Later on, Kyle, Shawn, Moses and Rachel are on the porch. Rachel squishing Kyle's cheeks together.

Kyle: Ah! What are you doing?

Rachel: You look completely different without your hair or your beard....

Kyle: Yes, I'm aware. Can you stop touching my face, please?

Rachel: But you look like a pucker fish. A very clean but cranky pucker fish. Here, pucker your lips together.

Moses laughs.

Kyle: Rachel....

Rachel: Okay, okay.

Rachel stops squishing Kyle's face together.

Moses: Damn, this place looks fantastic!

Kyle laughs, before he notices Rachel, fidgeting.

Rachel: So.....

Rachel turns to Kyle, twisting her lips as if asking a question.

Kyle: Go ahead and look. Just be careful.

Rachel: Thank you!

Rachel grabs Moses' hand.

Rachel: Come on, Moses!

Moses: Whoa!

Kyle: Hey, just explore!

Rachel pulls Moses hand and then runs off the porch, exploring the houses. Caleb then comes out and places his hands on the railings.

Caleb: Look at you. Old man yelling at the kids to behave themselves.

At night, the survivors are in the house together, looking around. Sarah exits the bathroom, carrying a toothbrush, sighing.

Sarah: How long was I in the bathroom for?

Kyle: Thirty minutes.

Sarah: God, I missed brushing my teeth.

Sarah then looks at Kyle, smiling.

Kyle: What?

Sarah: You look just like you did when I first met you. Clean shaved with a buzz cut.

Kyle: Trust me; it felt weird shaving. Rachel wouldn't stop squishing my damn face together.

Kyle then walks by Sarah, who then whispers.

Sarah: I get why we're playing this safe....but we've never had an approach like this.

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: No, we haven't.

Sarah: But I have a good feeling about this place.

Kyle: I hope you're right.

Sarah: Yeah, me too.

Sarah nods, before there is a knock on the door, causing everyone in the house to stand and turn towards the door. Kyle opens the door, revealing Laura.

Laura: Hello, Kyle, I-

Laura stops speaking and looks at Kyle, noticing his haircut and clean-shaven face.

Laura: Goddamn....

Kyle groans.

Laura: I didn't know there was a man under there. If I only twenty years younger-

Sarah: Uh, he's spoken for, ma'am.

Laura: Sorry....it was meant to be a bad joke. I didn't mean to interrupt. I just wanted to stop and see how you're all settling.

Laura looks around to see the survivors and smiles.

Laura: Oh, my. Staying together. Smart.

Kyle: Well, no one said we couldn't.

Laura: You said you're a family and it's good to see you live by that. Absolutely amazing, how strong your bond is. Don't you think? How's your friend, Abigail, doing?

Kyle: Rachel and Moses checked on her earlier. Your nurse, Dennis, knows his stuff. Everyone said you gave them jobs.

Laura: Yep. Part of this place....Guess the jury's out on that one.

Kyle: What about me?

Laura: I already have. I just won't tell you yet. Same with Sarah. I'm closing in on something for Margaret...also Rachel and just trying to figure out Shawn, but I will.

Laura looks up to Kyle.

Laura: You look handsome.

Laura leaves as Kyle shuts the door, before Sarah folds her lips.

Kyle: She's not trying to make a pass, honey.

Sarah: Uh-huh.

The next day, Kyle, Shawn, James, Sarah, Cassandra, Caleb, Rocky, Margaret, Rachel, Moses, Kayla, Savannah and Chris exit the house and separate to explore Berrington.

Kyle: They said we should explore. So let's explore.

Shawn: You go ahead....I'll stay for a bit.

Kyle nods his head, looking out into Berrington.

Kyle: Jake and Keera, they always talked about wanting a neighborhood like this. Thinking "one day".

Shawn: Well, we're here.

Kyle: We'll be back.

Kyle leaves the front porch, unable to find anyone.

Kyle: Sarah? Rachel?! Sarah?! Fuck!

Kyle sprints and looks around, frantically.

Kyle: Shit!

Kyle then knocks over a made statue, before Alicia comes out.

Alicia: Kyle, are you okay?!

Kyle: Where's Sarah and Rachel? They were ahead of me!

Alicia: Kyle, breath. It's okay. I think I know where they are.

Alicia leads Kyle to Sarah and Rachel as they are meeting an elderly Caucasian-American man.

Alicia: That's Sylvester. He had a daughter, but she died. He runs the shack over there where we host parties and get togethers. It's been a long time since anyone's ever seen a teenager or a kid. I mean, Laura also has another daughter, Morgan, who's about Rachel's age.

Kyle: Thank you. It's just-fucking paranoia.

Alicia: It's okay...

Samantha: Hey!

Kyle and Alicia are approached by a Caucasian-American woman with blonde hair.

Samantha: I heard screaming and crashing. Was that you two?

Kyle: Uh...that was me, miss. Sorry.

Kyle then turns to Alicia.

Kyle: Look, I'm sorry I broke whatever this is I broke.

Alicia: It's a sculpture. I'm an artist.

Kyle: Barber and artist.....what were you building?

Alicia: A Eagle. Just need to get the eyes right.

Kyle: Right. The eyes.

Alicia: You didn't look at it, did you?

Kyle: Well, I was in the middle of going batshit crazy. Thank you.

Alicia: Don't mention it.

Kyle turns to Samantha.

Kyle: I don't believe I've had the pleasure, ma'am. Kyle.

Kyle shakes hands with Samantha.

Samantha: Samantha. You're one of the new people my mom let in recently.

Kyle: You must be Laura's daughter.

Samantha: Yeah....my mom's the leader here....but to me she's known as mom. My husband is Josh and my son is Seth.

Kyle: How old's your son?

Samantha: Six. Same as that little girl you guys have with you.....so you guys liking Berrington?

Kyle: Getting used to it.

Samantha: Not used to running from things out in the wasteland?

A moment.

Kyle: More or less.

Meanwhile, Rachel and Moses are looking around as a few smaller kids brush past them.

Moses: It is so weird seeing kids small like that playing again.....

Rachel: Is this how it was in your community?

Moses laughs.

Moses: Yeah...

Suddenly, a young Caucasian-American teenage girl with dirty blonde hair, standing with a young Hispanic American girl, Asian-American boy and a Caucasian-American teenage boy with brown hair standing on top of a wooden built post, shouts out to them.

Morgan: Yo, fresh bloods!

Rachel and Moses look around.

Morgan: Up here.

Rachel and Moses look up at the three.

Morgan: You two are new.

Rachel: Yeah....

Moses: We are.

The three teens then approach Rachel and Moses, introducing themselves.

Morgan: I'm Morgan.

Morgan then turns to the brown haired boy.

Morgan: This is my boyfriend, Zeke.

Morgan turns to the Hispanic teenager.

Morgan: Dana.

Morgan turns to the Asian teenager.

Morgan: Jason...

Rachel: Rachel...

Moses: I'm Moses.

Morgan: Yeah, you two are friends with that Kyle guy, right?

Rachel: Yeah, we showed up just a few days ago.

Morgan lends her hand as Rachel and Moses shake it.

Morgan: You two wanna come join us?

Rachel turns to Moses, then back at Morgan, she then smiles.

Rachel: Sure....

Moses: Sure thing.

Morgan: Cool. Come on.

Morgan leads Rachel and Moses to a pair of chairs where the six teens then sit down.

Morgan: First question; are you two the youngest of the group?

Moses: Well, we have a six year old kid in our group.....

Morgan: Well, how's it feel being the only ones of the old pack of the group?

Rachel: Feels a bit weird, but Kyle and the other adults do a good job of keeping the group safe.....there's also my friend, Abigail.

Morgan: Right. I heard about that. The redhead that was unconscious when you guys showed up, right? What'd she get hurt from?

Rachel: Uh....

Moses: Rad-city. She was getting medicine for our friend, Cassandra, when she was heavily irradiated. She survived, but....well, right now, she's in a coma.

Moses takes Rachel's hand.

Moses takes Rachel's hand.

Morgan: I'm sorry to hear that....

Dana clears his throat.

Dana: So, how long have you two been together?

Moses laughs at that.

Moses: Well, uh....

Moses looks up at Rachel.

Moses: A few months ago....it a kinda just happened.

Morgan: See, Jason, if true love can happen for these two, it can happen for you, too.

Rachel: What does that mean?

Morgan: It means Jason was talking about how cute you are, but sees that you're already taken.

Jason: I never-

Jason shakes his head, then turns to Rachel and Moses.

Jason: Uh....sorry. I wasn't trying to plan on making a move on your girl, man. It's just Zeke and I haven't seen a pretty girl in a while.

Moses: Well, why don't you ask out your friend here?

Zeke: Because they have a strict "no dating friends" rule.

Dana: Oh, forgot I did hear that part....anyway, awkwardness aside. Are you two adjusting to Berrington?

Rachel: Yeah...Just new place. Getting used to everything, you know?

Zeke: Fortunately, I don't. Sorry. For a while it's just been me. We've lived here for most of our lives.

Jason: At least you two get to explore someplace new.

Dana: You've been out there for quite some time, right? Heard you guys were on a train for almost a year.

Moses: Uh....yeah...we actually were....survived really awful shit.

Zeke: What kind of awful shit?

Rachel: Fanatics, who believed electricity was bad. Cannibals....

Moses looks down, thinking of the Ravagers.

Moses: Bikers, who were slavers.

Morgan: Damn....

Zeke: It must've been hard out there. I'm sorry.

Rachel: Thank you....Honestly, it's nice that this place has people our own age.

Dana: Tell me about it. When I first got here, it was just a bunch of middle old aged married couples. All the men around here are in their thirties or fourties doing runs and shit.....then Jason not too long after. Unlike...

Dana points to Morgan.

Dana: Miss Princess here.

Rachel: What does she mean by that?

Morgan: I'm one of Laura's kids.....

Rachel: Laura Burns? The leader here?

Morgan: Yep....but unlike my brother-in-law and sis, I have the fun part of keeping the peace here; babysitting my six-year-old nephew.

Moses: So, what do you guys do since you know....teens can't really go on runs.

Morgan: Well, we go to school, but we all like hang out afterwards.

Moses: You guys have school?

Jason: It's in a church. First, it's the little kids like that little six-year-old you've got with you....then the teens in the afternoon.

Morgan: So, rumor has it that there's a party going on tomorrow night at Sylvester's to celebrate your people, but just so you know; it'll mostly be middle aged dudes and I know you don't want to be around all that "old people" talk. You should come to the bond fire that's planned instead. Be around the young people. While you're young. Am I right?

Rachel: Uh....

Moses: We don't know, guys. We just got here!

Morgan: Come on! You're new, plus, it's not every time we get kids our age!

Rachel and Moses don't speak for a while, but then speaks.

Rachel: Yeah. Sure.

Morgan: Sweet!
