Frank remained inside the house with the old man for a few more minutes while William watched them from outside.
Suddenly, they heard the sound of a vehicle approaching.
A police car stopped in front of the house.
The two officers inside stepped out of the vehicle and walked toward William. They spoke to him in Arabic, but William didn't understand a single word.
A moment later Frank came out of the house and approached them.
"Officers," Frank said, "there's an old man inside the house. He's alone."
One of the policemen looked at him suspiciously.
"What are you doing here?" the officer asked.
Frank quickly thought of an explanation.
"We were just walking around when…" He paused for a moment, then lowered his voice so the old man inside wouldn't hear. "The man inside was calling out into the street. That's how I noticed him. I came closer and we started talking."
