Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 - Secret Squirrel

Sergeant Barreto stood with three other members of her squad in Colonel Clegg's office. He sat at his desk studying them silently for almost a minute. He finally sighed and sat up straighter in his chair.

"At ease," he said absently. "As far as the record is concerned, this meeting never happened. Do any of you have a problem with that?"

Sergeant Barreto barely twitched an eyelid. She remained silent, as did the other three women next to her. Colonel Clegg was by far the best commander she had served under. He had earned her loyalty many times over.

"This assignment is classified, and you will report all information to myself or Colonel Rockwell. The four of you will be going outside the wire for this mission. You've all gone secret squirrel before, which is why you are here now. You'll be plain-clothes the whole time, 9-mils only. Your primary mission is to monitor and if necessary, protect Heidi Rockwell. I know there has been a lot of speculation regarding Miss Rockwell after the last couple of days in the media. Ignore anything you've heard. The truth is far far stranger. In addition to your primary mission of protecting Miss Rockwell, you will also be gathering any information you can regarding her activities. Anything that seems odd, or even slightly out of place, you are to include in your report. I am not exaggerating when I tell you this could be the most important mission you will ever embark on. This is not a babysitting mission. Never mistake it for one. There is a good chance that there will be abduction attempts. If such an attempt is made, you will immediately call for backup and do everything in your power to prevent such an attempt from succeeding until backup arrives."

Sergeant Barreto felt a thrill of excitement as Colonel Clegg outlined the parameters of their mission. She had indeed seen the news but had blown it off as media hype. Apparently there was a lot more to it than hype.
