Chapter 1 - Danganronpa: Media Madness

(??? POV)

Hope's Peak Academy, one of the most successful and known schools throughout the entire nation of Japan, hell, even the world. It's built its success on focusing on recruiting students with talents, some of the best in the world.

Other schools have tried to replicate this, but to no avail,as Hope's Peak stands as the best to ever do it, putting out students that cure cancer, become athletes that nobody could ever compete with, engineers that could defy the laws of physics, celebrities being pushed out simply because they attended here. Needless to say, Hope's Peak is the hardest school to get into ever.

Usually it's a very rigorous process to even get noticed in Hope's Peak's eyes, having to do something extraordinary like deadlift 900 pounds at 15 or figure out how to escape a room in only 10 seconds. Yet, every year Hope's Peak has a lottery where they choose a random participant as the "Ultimate lucky student."

But I am not that student, I got into here because of my actual talent, not luck. My name would be Light Yagami, the ultimate strategist,as the school would call me. I got accepted into this school after I was simply in the right place at the right time, at an arcade. The country's best player was there, creeping around, searching for some new players to torment with the media followinghim, and I was the poor soul he chose.

He challenged me to a game, and I beat him while calling out all of his moves right before he did them, finishing the games with a perfect health bar every single time. That alone didn't get me here, but after a week or two of continuously getting challenged and beating these "world's best players" they eventually called.

I initially wanted to reject coming to this school, being content with my normal life, but my parents were so excited they cried a river. My father is a single parent after my mother died when I was young, leaving him with two kids and a job as a small-time police officer. Over the years,my father climbed through the ranks, eventually making it to chief of police. But alsoover those years there was a gap between us, the house getting quieter and quieter until it felt like two strangers just happened to live together.

But when I got this invitation to this school, my father was overjoyed, the happiest he's been in a long while, so I accepted it and well… Here I am.

I stood in front of the intimidating school with its brown colors from the sun beaming down on it, glass on the top reflecting its rays upon the ground. I looked down and adjusted my light brown suit and red tie, cracking my neck and walking in with my briefcase.

I started to walk in the school's gates, finally getting on campus when something started to happen. My ears started to hear faint noises like static, my vision swam and I felt my knees buckle as I fell on the ground.

GASP

I awake with a gasp pulling my head up from its previous position of lying down on a desk. I look around and try to take in all of my surroundings while trying to recount my steps. The last thing I remember is walking into Hope's Peak when suddenly passing out, but I don't know if it was a dream or an actual memory.

I look around and take in the dilapidated surroundings. The room was illuminated by a single lightbulb and my previous laying spot was a desk in the middle of a classroom. I look towards the windows and see them boarded up with solid metal with the words Find the rest written on the chalkboard continuously.

I walk out of the classroom and into a long stretching hallway, doors on each side stretching out into darkness where I couldn't see. I choose to go to the nearest door on my right and see a very surprising sight.

The room was a replica of a jungle environment, leaves and mini trees being everywhere with sand on the floor that a boy was lying on. The boy looked to be a natural blonde with dirty hair and a standard suit with a black tie. As the boy snored on the sand I took in how surreal this all was, waking up in a random room, going into another to find a whole new habitat… It doesn't make any damn sense.

The sounds of waves crashing echoed throughout the room yet, there was no source of water anywhere I could look. I slowly walk close to the boy, taking in his features and appearance trying to notice the finer details. He smelled like oak trees with a hint of salt, his suit and tie were thoroughly disheveled with wrinkles everywhere.

I tapped him on the shoulder thrice, causing him to slightly stir before breaking open his eyes. As soon as he saw me, I could barely think before I felt a strong blow connect to my jaw. "What the fuck!? Who are you and where the hell am I?" The boy yelled, almost immediately standing up with his hands in a fighting position.

I nursed my cheek while also standing up, making sure to keep my distance from the obviously volatile boy in front of me. "My name is Light Yagami. I woke up in a classroom on the left and came here where I saw you sleeping and tried to wake you up."

The boy clicked his teeth and put his hands down a bit, though not putting his guard down at all. "Fine. Might as well introduce myself if I gotta be face to face with a pretty-boy weirdo like you." Rude.

The boy points to himself. "Names Denji Jihayaki. I already know yours but I'll just keep calling you pretty-boy." My tongue goes down to my cheek tasting blood, damn he hits hard. "Please do not call me that." The boy puts his hand on his chin in a thinking position before saying. "Nope."

I sigh and take my hand off my face. "Can you take this seriously you damn moron? We just got kidnapped, you don't even know who I am and it looks like we're trapped in some sort of weird dream." The boy's brain finally begins to work as he slightly opens his mouth with an idiotic expression on his face.

"Uhhhh. I guess you're right, pretty-boy. Look, I'll go and try to look for the other guys on the left and you take right, how's that sound?" I resist my urge to smack the boy upside his head and instead choose to clench my fist. Don't kill the boy, Light. He's obviously mentally unwell and you just have to deal with him.

"Fine."

(Scene change)

Me and Denji did as we set out to do, getting out of the room (Which Denji made me go first because the damn imbecile thinks I'll stab him in the back or something if he went first) and splitting up. Unfortunately for me, all of my encounters with the other students to the right seemed exactly the same as Denji.

I went through a door and came into a dilapidated room, replicas of guns, grenades and bombs being scattered across the room with a single girl lying on the floor in the fetal position. She had a standard Japanese button-up school uniform, her skirt reaching down to her thighs where they were covered up in thigh-highs. As I walked closer I noticed her face had a nasty scar on it, looking like the kanji for big but flipped sideways and straightened out.

Just like with Denji I poke her on the shoulder thrice, but this time I hurriedly step back which proves to be a successful move as the girl's fist tries to strike exactly where my nose would be at before. "A-a-aaaahh!" She looks around the room and screams, hurriedly crawling backwards before bumping into a wall. "W-w-who are you, how'd I get in here!?" Well at least this one didn't hit me like the other fool did when he asked.

"My name is Light Yagami, I don't know where we are and there are other people with us. I recently awoke someone else named Denji, he is currently going through rooms on the left side. Would you like to join him, join me, or stay here?" The girl trembles. "I-I-I want to go with you." She shakily gets up and bows her head to me. "M-my name is Asa M-mikata." Good, somebody at the very least knows basic respect here.

We walk out of the room and go around to every door on the right, ending off at an uneven three in total, four including me.

We found David Martinez and Mark Grayson sleeping on inactive treadmills; their room seemed to be entirely based on running in general. David had on what seemed to be a modified jacket made for paramedics, alongside a black shirt with a cross and baggy jeans. He seems to be a bit of a hothead like that buffoon Denji, yet unlike him, he knows how to keep a good head on his shoulders and could actually think rationally.

Mark, on the other hand, seemed to be generally a good and optimistic person, calming down me and David as we were about to get into a small altercation. He had on a simple blue shirt with two stripes going horizontally down the middle and simple khaki pants. Anyway, they both chose to stay in their room, which led me and Asa to the next.

We then went into a room solely themed on electronics, wrenches, nuts, and bolts, all piled enough to be a makeshift bed for the two boys who were sleeping on it, significantly younger than the others, only looking to be around 13. The first had red hair and a very triangular-shaped head, with an orange-striped shirt and blue shorts. The other had obviously dyed his hair green, wearing purple jeans that were pulled up all the way to his torso, barely allowing his beige shirt to peek through.

We quickly woke them up and explained the situation. Thankfully, they weren't as hostile as everybody else, being surprisingly innocent and casual about this, though still scared. They introduced themselves as Phineas and Ferb, Phineas being the one with the orange shirt and Ferb being the one with the green hair. It seemed that Phineas did most of the talking and talked in an American accent while Ferb only said a single sentence, yet I could still hear his British accent.

They both chose to go with Denji as we moved onto the next room, once again opening the door, revealing a room very different than the others we encountered so far. The room was full of circles of unknown origin, pulsating with strange light as a short blonde kid was drawing on the floor with a piece of chalk. "Oi, did you just call me short in your head?" How did he know? "...No."

The kid sighs. "Whatever. I'm Edward Elric; what're you two's names?" The kid stands up, revealing the metallic sheen of his right prosthetic arm. "My name is Light Yagami, and this is Asa Mikata next to me." Asa sheepishly smiles and waves while Edward rolls his eyes and pinches the bridge of his nose while walking towards us. "Look, I don't got any time for this; that damn red bear trapped us in here and I still don't know what she wants."

Red bear? What was he talking about? Before I could ask about the bear, he already waved me off, putting on his red coat to cover up his tanktop-clad body. "Look, I'll go investigate, you two just stay he–"

Before Edward could finish his sentence, a blaring noise played throughout the halls as the sound of a woman clearing her throat was heard. "Ahem, ahem. Attention all dear students of Hope's Peak academy, since you are all awake now, I would love for all of you to report the the dining hall for orientation. For all of you dummies, cough cough Denji cough cough the dining hall would be directly to the left and down the hall." The blaring noise played again as the voice stopped.

Edward sighed again. "Follow me." He said as he just walked out. Me and Asa quickly walked after him and started grilling him with questions: how did he get here? What red bear are you talking about? What were those circles in your room?

"I don't know. That damn bear trapped us here. That was my ultimate talent; I'm the ultimate alchemist." He revealed as he sped down the hall, us barely following him. He took a sharp turn down the hall as we stopped asking him questions and finally coming across the dining area.

The dining area was very spacious, being able to house about 600 people with over 120 tables of varying color scattered around and a podium in the middle of the room. There were a bunch of faces I didn't recognize like an impatient asian woman in an orange dress that seemed to be about the same age as the other two kids we found, a redhead with yellow eyes in a completely clean suit and what seemed to be a thug with a metal pipe in his hands. But before I could continue analyzing the crowd a slow drum roll started to play.

The drumroll was calm, being at a slow tempo before suddenly getting as loud as possible, drums coming into the mix as the now rock music assaulted the ears of everybody in the room. And out of nowhere, an anthropomorphic red panda with a blue skirt and shirt jumped up from behind the moment and yelled just as the beat dropped.

"CCCCCCCHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! WHO'S READY TO ROCK!"

Nobody answered, too stunned by the sudden rock music assaulting their ears and the bear that just appeared. "No? Nobody ready to rock? Alright boys, turn off the music." The bear slightly sulks as she talks, the music being immediately turned off as she gained a sadistic grin on her face.

"Hello everybody, my name is Retsuko, and welcome to your killing game!"
