A medical report was passed across the table, two copies slid toward my father and me, and one toward the elder mediating the issue.
My eyes widened the instant I caught the title printed at the top, but I forced myself to stay quiet. My throat felt dry as I lifted my gaze to Elizabeth. She was already watching me, that same blank expression painted across her face, calm and composed, yet underneath it, there was something else. Triumph. The quiet, poisonous kind that seeps through a person's smile when they believe they've finally won.
And me? I could only stare.
I couldn't speak. Nor could I bring myself to defend my allegations.
The way she was spinning the story, twisting every truth into something dark, making it seem as though I were the monster, her abuser, her tormentor, since the day we accepted this alliance.
