Chapter 1 - Unwanted Creature?

Year 2145.

Planet Earth is succumbing to pollution. It is on the verge of ..dying. Mankind lives not a lighter reality, but is in fact taking after its habitat. Insufficient life conditions only added chaos to the chaos. "Normal" lifestyles were led to regression. Trying their best to survive are the nomads, amongst other minorities of the still alive humans. Trying their best fighting for their right to remain alive, actually.

...

In some small nomadic tribe lives a boy who was found in the ruins of a former skyscraper that collapsed, for no reason but humanity's own oblivion– no, ignorance towards the environment. Luckily enough, it was his people who found him.

Character Data Card: Sorem

Age: 14

Height: 160 cm

Description: brown haired, with hazel eyes, quite toned physically for his age, has a white guy tan going on (more of a beige skin color) — wears Jack's old clothes [ most being quite durable pants and long-sleeved shirts in earthy colors]

Favorite Food: does not have any preference. Eats whatever Annette puts on the table; he however despises mushrooms.

Talent: impressively fast learning speed [discovered by Miller while training Sorem; he got the gist and perfectly followed through only two rounds of explanation]

He was raised by the very people he was born amongst, the "Scavengers." The "Guardians," women of the tribe, raised him so that he grows strong and healthy. Although the whereabouts of his parents are unknown to date, everyone in the tribe treats him as one of them, theirs and their equal. Under their guidance he learned the essence of hunting, trapping, and looking for resources.

...

A new day was brought on by the rays of the heating sun peeking through the dark clouds in the sky. Sleeping in a tent, Sorem woke up startled by some subtle noise outside, seemingly so close it sounded like it came from right behind his head. He chose to ignore it, as it is too quiet a noise to be considered a threat. Sorem's instinct proved right, for the rustling quieted down when he stepped outside to inspect the area after getting dressed and putting on his boots.

"SOREM WE'RE OVER HERE," yelled on top of a hill nearby, another man standing beside him. Sorem followed the voice source, approaching the people over the hill whose voices only got more chaotic as he got closer. Next thing he knew, he heard a loud slap, so loud that it echoed through the forest down the hill.

"Listen here, you potato-brained blondie. Why do you have to yell so loud the whole Tribe hears you? Do you need another slap in the face?" an infuriated Miller said. He was dressed in a deep dark green jacket and pants of the same color, paired with solid leather boots. Miller scruffled his short brown beard, "Listen, Jack, I'm aware that you're excited to have Sorem with us today, but you are scaring away all the animals around" he explained after having calmed down ever so slightly.

Character Data Card: Miller

Age: 50

Occupation: Scavenger Trainer / Overseer

[The Strongest in the Tribe]

Height: 190 cm

Description: bald; brown eyes; short beard around 1cm in length: brown, but with some grey hairs mixed in; dark tanned skin; extremely well defined body with veins popping out of most of his defined muscle groups like biceps and chest; has old piercing holes in his ears which closed up, but the scars remain.

Talent: Adaptability. Miller is able to adapt to most situations and makes the best decisions in a split second, allowing him to survive in very different environments.

Favorite Food: Sir lead stomach; as long as what is offered somewhat edible, and you put it in front of him, it will be gone in seconds.

"Miller-! That stings! Anywho I don't care if the animals are gone- even better so since it's going to be easier for our Sorem here. You know- no dangers for him to get hurt and whatnot..." said Jack— a young guy when compared to Miller who has already gone bald.

Character Data Card: Jack

Age: 28

Occupation: Scavenger Bow Ace (won by luck)

Height: 185 cm

Description: quite pale skin that otherwise has taken a reddish tan from standing in the sun for long hours, blue or green eyes that switch between these two depending on the light reflected upon them, rather skinny when compared to Miller, not weak by any means but lean (he doesn't work out aside from the mandatory training)

Talent: unending humor (to everyone's dismay)

Favorite Food: Sweet tooth! Jack will devour everything that tastes even slightly sweet.

"Millerrr, how is the mirror up there doing?" Jack points at Miller's bald head- before receiving a punch right to his stomach. "Whew. You really know how to get on someone's nerves, yeah, Jack?" Jack couldn't care less about what Miller was going on about as he, kneeling on the ground, was trying not to cry or to throw up on the new clothes he just received. They were a robust brown leather jacket and cargo pants matching his black leather boots. "Take mercy... on me," Jack said in a joking– mocking tone.

By the time Sorem got onto the hill, Miller was already trying to stab Jack. [Nonetheless, their relationship, although rocky, was that more of brothers— close companions that would kill for each other, and- well, their other half is as evident.] "Soreeem heeeelp meeee!! Milleeeer is eviiil" Jack cried in rather a joking manner, solely to piss Miller off. Noticing that Sorem has finally come around, Miller quickly put away his knife and helped Jack up. He pretentiously let out an awkward cough then proceeded to address him, "Well, Sorem, now that you're 14 years in our tribe, I believe it is time for you to become an Official Scavenger for the people." He pulled out a small piece of paper and handed it to Sorem. "Here, the exam. You need to complete this list for you to become an official scavenger."

SCAVEGER EXAM

· Successfully build and lay a trap.

· Make a campfire.

· Create an improvised weapon with the materials provided.

· Successfully catch an animal of any kind.

· kIcK MiLlEr iN tHe AsS

What? That last bullet point left Sorem bewildered. "Uhm, Sir Miller? May I ask what is meant by that last point? It is quite crudely written too.."

Miller got startled ever so slightly— after all, he wrote all points himself; the third point was rather simple— but he quickly regained composure and answered Sorem. "Catch an Animal? That shouldn't be a problem for you even after Jack woke all animals in a 3 kilometer radius up."

Jack, remembering what he did, slowly started retreating, trying to not get noticed by Miller. Solem handed the piece of paper back to Miller to point out to him which point he actually meant. Miller quietly took a look at the paper after saying his thanks to Solem. Taking a closer look at the paper, Miller had a kind of sadistic grin creep up his face. "It seems that you don't have to pay attention to that point. Complete the first 2 points on the paper first, and I will give you the materials for a weapon later, alright? You can start now, Sorem. "

Jack's slow retreat turned into a full blown sprint proceeding Miller's words. "and you Ja- WAIT GET BACK HERE YOU PIECE OF SHIT"

Miller, quickly catching up with his speed, chased after Jack.

"Well, that was something." Sorem thought before proceeding with his exam.
