Chapter 37 - A little bit of humanity

Wren's determination to confront Kai grew with every step, her mind fixated on clearing up the situation.

The last thing she wanted was for Kai Blackwood to have feelings for her. With a sense of resolve, she made her way back to the lake, but Kai was nowhere to be found.

The only sign of his presence was a punch etched into the trunk of a cherry blossom tree, the indentation a stark reminder of his volatile temper.

Wren shivered slightly at the sight, but her resolve didn't waver. She was more determined than ever to find Kai and get some answers.

Using her system, she tracked Kai's location, and her eyes widened as she saw the results. He was at the supermarket, a place she had visited many times before. Wren's pace quickened as she hurried towards the market, her mind racing with questions and concerns. She couldn't wait to confront Kai and put this awkward situation behind her.

As she entered the supermarket, Wren's eyes scanned the crowded aisles, searching for Kai's familiar figure. She spotted him standing by the fruit stand, his eyes fixed on a display of apples. Wren's heart skipped a beat as she approached him, her voice firm and resolute. "Kai Blackwood," she called out, her tone leaving no room for misinterpretation. She was here to get answers, and she wouldn't leave until she got them.

As Kai approached Wren, his dead eyes seemed to bore into her soul, and Wren felt a shiver run down her spine.

The insecurities etched on his face were a stark contrast to his usual confident demeanor, and Wren's gaze lingered on him, trying to understand the complexity of his emotions.

The way Kai walked towards her, his slow strides eating up the distance between them, brought back a flood of memories. Wren's eyes widened as dizziness washed over her, and she felt like she was seeing everything for the first time. The cool sensation that followed was like a key turning in a lock, and her missing memories came rushing back.

"You...you hypnotized me, you have two personalities," Wren said, her voice laced with sarcasm and a hint of amusement. She couldn't believe Kai had the audacity to alter her memories, and a part of her felt manipulated and used.

But another part of her found it fascinating, like a dark and twisted puzzle piece that fit perfectly into place.

Wren's expression turned cold as she gazed at Kai, her words dripping with disdain. "How dare you alter my memories, what do you take me for? Someone who goes around spitting people's secrets out in public?"

The irony wasn't lost on her, and she smiled wryly, knowing that Kai Blackwood was exactly the kind of person who would do such a thing.

But as she looked at Kai, she saw the faintest glimmer of vulnerability in his eyes.

It was a fleeting moment, but Wren caught it, and her gaze softened ever so slightly. She turned to leave, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Be rest assured I am not so despicable to tell your secrets. If you don't trust me, you can hypnotize me again."

As Wren walked away, Kai's expression remained cold and detached, but his eyes betrayed him.

The word "ruthless" echoed in his mind, bringing back a flood of bad memories. He mouthed the words, "I am not ruthless," his lips barely moving.

But the doubt lingered, and for a moment, Wren wondered if she had seen something in him that no one else had – a glimmer of humanity beneath the surface.
