Chapter 1 - The last afternoon

On a sunny Monday afternoon, a young boy named Jiang Dao waited by the roadside with his classmates for the traffic light to change. His class had just ended, and he was excited to go home, change, and go biking on the mountain with his friends. The warm afternoon sun cast long shadows across the pavement as students chattered excitedly about their plans.

"Chen Fan, how was your score?"

"Just so-so," Chen Fan replied, adjusting his backpack strap.

"Bro, I'll wait for you at the usual spot." A guy with a solid build for his age said as he crossed the road and headed towards the right with another friend, their footsteps echoing against the concrete.

"You guys should be faster! My little sister and her friends want to try biking with us," a tall guy with a face full of pimples beside Chen Fan said excitedly, a knowing smile spreading across his face.

"Whoa! You only said that now?!" The other two heard him, which changed their casual walking into eager running, their voices fading as they disappeared around the corner.

"See you in a minute, guys..." Chen Fan fist-bumped him and went towards the left, in his home's direction.

Jiang Dao watched as Chen Fan disappeared into the crowd, then shouted for the others to get faster, before he headed towards another direction. The afternoon felt perfect—one of those ordinary moments that would later feel precious beyond measure.

Jiang Dao was just an ordinary high school boy. He had no dramatic backstory, no tragic family, no sworn enemies—just a regular life filled with homework, friends, and dreams of weekend adventures. The kind of life that felt endless when you're living it.

"Beep!!"

"Hey!!"

"Ahhh!"

Just as he was passing another intersection, a loud, desperate beep rang out. A fast-moving truck was barreling in his direction, hitting cars along the way like dominoes. In the harsh afternoon light, Jiang Dao could clearly see the driver's panicked expression through the windshield—wide eyes, mouth agape, hands gripping the wheel uselessly.

"Fuck!" He could only curse as he tried to dodge along with a few others, time seeming to slow as his mind processed the inevitable.

"Ahhh!"

*Thud!*

But it was too late. The truck, with its unstoppable momentum, sent him flying through the air before he crashed onto the pavement, his head striking the concrete with a sickening crack. The truck continued its rampage, slamming into a nearby building. Chunks of cement and glass exploded outward, raining down on horrified passersby and adding more casualties to the growing disaster.

"Boom!"

"Ahhh!"

"Fuck, what happened?!"

The intersection transformed into chaos as people ran out of their respective houses and buildings to witness a rare moment of disaster they could later recount to friends, families, or classmates. A few others quickly pulled out their phones, sensing the opportunity to go viral, their screens lighting up as they captured the tragedy.

"Damn, where's my phone?!"

"Wow, what happened?"

"It seems to be a drunk driver."

"Really? How did you know he was drunk?"

"Pic! Pic!"

People's happiness and sadness are not the same. While some were enjoying the spectacle and quietly chasing social media fame, for others, it was a world-ending scenario unfolding in real time.

"My son!!! Noo!" A middle-aged man burst out of a nearby restaurant, his chef's apron still tied around his waist, running desperately towards Jiang Dao.

"Honey?... You're joking, right?" A girl with an engagement ring on her trembling hand knelt down beside a handsome young man with a matching ring. Tears formed in her eyes as she realized the trip they'd planned for next weekend would never happen.

Amidst the chaos, Jiang Dao lay on the cold ground. Beneath him spread a growing pool of crimson blood, stark against the grey pavement. Surprisingly, he was still clinging to consciousness, each breath a monumental effort.

"Son! Son!! Hold on, the ambulance is coming!" A warm and rough hand gently elevated his head as a cracking voice whispered in his ears. Even though he couldn't hear clearly through the ringing and chaos, he could still feel the warmth of his father's voice flowing into his fading heart.

Jiang Dao felt like his whole body was screaming in agony. The pain was so unbearable he wanted it to end. He could feel his heart slowing down, each beat weaker than the last. His body screamed, "It's over!" His organs shutting down, his senses dulling by the second as darkness crept in from the edges of his vision.

Through tremendous effort, Jiang Dao barely opened his eyes through the bloody haze, his vision now clouded with thick blood that seeped from his wounds. He saw a silhouette—his father—screaming something desperately as the distant wail of approaching sirens grew louder. The muffled sound of the ambulance was the last thing he heard before his vision was cut off forever.

"Noo!"

On the roadside, a middle-aged man with a graying beard and a face marked by years of hard work was screaming as he held the body of a bloodied young man in a school uniform, his backpack scattered nearby, textbooks and homework assignments now soaked in blood.

The ambulance had arrived with flashing red and blue lights cutting through the afternoon sunlight. Paramedics jumped out, their movements quick and practiced, but one EMT approached them and stopped as he assessed the scene. His experienced eyes told him what his heart didn't want to accept. A young life, carrying the hopes and dreams of his family and the future of society, now lay lifeless on the cold, unforgiving ground.

The paramedic's radio crackled to life: "Unit 7, what's your status?"

"We have multiple casualties. One DOA, male, approximately 17 years old..." His voice was steady, professional, but his hands shook slightly as he checked for a pulse he knew wouldn't be there.

The ambulance's engine continued to rumble as other paramedics worked frantically on the survivors. The rhythmic beeping of medical equipment mixed with the distant sound of police sirens created a symphony of emergency that would forever change this intersection.

Jiang Dao's life was just getting started. But now it was over, ended by a single moment of someone else's mistake. Just because he had taken this road at this time, his life was now over before it even truly began. He should have been in his room later, texting his friends, complaining about homework, or planning tomorrow's adventures, but now...

Dreams really became just dreams, and plans remained just plans, scattered like the pages of his blood-soaked textbooks.

A while later, his friends got the news and came in a hurry on their bikes, their excited chatter about the mountain trail replaced by stunned silence.

"Whoa!"

After stopping their bikes with screeching brakes, the group wandered among the yellow-taped area, surrounded by many people. Chen Fan's eyes shrank as he saw his best friend on the stretcher, now covered by a white sheet, along with other victims being loaded into waiting ambulances.

"Is that... Jiang?"

"No way, this can't be happening, right?" The taller guy, whose face was now drained of color, was filled with disbelief. Just an hour earlier, they had been laughing and making plans, but in a single moment, they were already separated by life and death.

The ambulance doors slammed shut with a finality that echoed through the crowd. As it pulled away, its sirens gradually fading into the distance, it carried away not just a body, but the dreams and future of a boy who would never make it to the mountain trail.

"Brother, is that your friend?"

"Y-yes..." Chen Fan replied tremblingly, his voice cracked. "Let's cancel today's trip. I'm not in the mood." He turned around to leave this nightmare behind but saw Jiang Dao's father in a corner, sitting blankly with blood still staining his hands and apron.

"Uncle Jiu... Jiang Dao... I'm sorry..."

The middle-aged man looked up and smiled sadly, seeing his son's friends standing there with their bikes, ready for an adventure that would never come. The last ambulance pulled away, its red taillights disappearing around the corner, leaving behind only the echo of what might have been.

The sound of the ambulance faded into the distance, taking with it the last hope of a sunny Monday afternoon.
