Chapter 228 - 228 Rage Notes

After deliberating for several minutes Archivist Quillfeather finally spoke.

"Alright I'll wait for a little while. Where are you planning on making the spear anyways? I don't think there's a forge in this city durable enough to craft such a dangerous artifact."

"I know a skilled blacksmith and he's petitioning to use the royal forge right now. I hope he can receive permission soon. I can only keep holding onto the material for a week before I have to destroy it."

Archivist Quillfeather squawked in shock.

"There's that short of a time limit!? Then I'll call in a few favors and have us in the royal forge within four days."

"Thank you, Sir," Chronos stood and bowed to him.

Archivist Quillfeather waved his wing, "Think nothing of it. I want to see what a void spear looks like even more than you do."

With that they entered the lift and rode it back up to the first floor. Waving goodbye to Archivist Quillfeather and Micheal Chronos got off and left the tower.

Outside his carriage was still waiting to take him home.

On the way back he saw that the city's residents were setting up stalls on the side roads, putting celebratory banners over the main road, and preparing magic formations for the festival in a few days.

In the distance he could see several mages flying above a large construction site building an arena. Chronos smiled knowing that Lyla was definitely involved in getting that project going.

"Looks like the temple announced the system already. How long do you think it'll be before the opening day?"

Christopher, who was riding on the carriage's main seat answered.

"Three days from what I heard. They want to give it to the populace at the start of the week. It's looking like it'll be one of the largest celebrations in years. Are you going to take someone special to the celebration?"

For a moment Lyla's image flashed through his mind before he pushed it to the back.

"No, I don't have anyone like that."

"Is it that you don't have anyone or that she's too busy," Christopher replied with a smirk.

Chronos glared at him. He was already becoming stressed from dealing with the nobility and merchants, he didn't need to be reminded that he wouldn't get to see Lyla anytime soon. But Christopher ignored the glare and kept on driving.

When they reached the mansion, they found Butler Garfield waiting for them outside with a letter.

"Welcome back Young Master."

The letter was in a brilliant crimson envelope with delicate writing on it. Chronos frowned when he recognized his mother's handwriting. He stood there for a minute unwilling to pick up the letter when it started smoking at the edges.

"Shit, she sent a rage note here! Is she trying to tell the world our secrets!"

Grabbing it Chronos ran through the house as fast as he could, passing halls and rooms in a flash as he made a beeline for the study.

Sadly, he didn't make it to the study in time.

Flames erupted in the hallway forming into the image of his mother as shouting echoed throughout the mansion and into the street.

Suddenly he was very glad he hadn't seen much of Gregory or Sariah in the last couple of days.

"How could you let Gregory take a lover and not even arrange a wedding!? And you'd better not let them get married in the capital! Would you have even sent me an invitation to your brother's wedding if they did get married!? I highly doubt it. If it wasn't for Garfield sending me a notice, I wouldn't have known that your brother had a lover at all!

Do you truly value your mother so little that you can't even keep her in the loop on major events like this? You are in serious trouble when you get back! I'll be putting you through every training imaginable, just you wait..."

Her scolding continued for another five minutes mixed with threats and promises of violence before the letter finally started to calm down.

She was taking this far worse than Chronos had thought she would. He didn't think it was a big deal to delay telling her until they returned, which is what he had been planning to do.

But she had apparently been so upset that she had openly announced Gregory's status as an heir to the Ulv family by repeatedly calling him Chronos' brother in a rage note.

He'd be surprised if there was a single slum resident that didn't know about this within 5 days.

At either end of the hallway Chronos saw servants poking their heads around the corner to see who had received the rage note before shaking their heads and walking away. It wasn't the first time Chronos had been loudly scolded by his mother, and they were certain it wouldn't be the last.

Them showing up practically confirmed that everyone in the capital would know about this soon.

Finally, the rage note calmed down as she gave one last threat to Chronos.

"... And one last thing. If they come home with child before the marriage is held, I'll personally flay both of you alive! We are planning the wedding now so return within two months at the latest."

With that the rage note burned itself to ash.

Chronos stood there for a moment as Butler Garfield walked up beside him.

"I wasn't aware that you hadn't told her anything at all. I thought you had at least informed her that Sir Gregory was seeing someone. My apologies, Young Master."

"You have nothing to apologize for, Garfield. I did write a letter, but I forgot to send it home. With everything going on with the court and my body I've been very distracted lately."

"If it makes you feel any better Sir Gregory also has a rage note waiting for him."

Chronos smiled, "That is a little comforting. Thank you for telling me."

Butler Garfield bowed before giving him another piece of bad news.

"You're welcome. I suppose this is a bad time, but another letter did arrive for you today too."

Holding out his hand Chronos saw another familiar crimson letter sitting there, this time it had his father's handwriting on it.

He turned pale again before grabbing the smoking letter and bolting for the study. Luckily this time he made it, but the first few words and flames managed to leave the room as he slammed the door shut.
