"So when you said you had lab work to do, you meant this?"
"Yes," Ryan said, lowering his knife between cutting another slice of cake. "I went with Alex. Actually, I was going alone, then when he found out, he asked to tag along. He made this wide two-tier cake, and when we got to the scooter, we realized it wouldn't fit, so we had to go separately."
"Seems like you had a lot of fun."
"We did. The place looks like a real giant-sized cake. They put a lot of effort into the design. Maybe we could go on some other weekend. The ovens there are also better than the one at home."
"Okay."
Carl leaned back in his chair, watching Ryan measure the size of the slice seriously. Ryan had patiently fed him the first slice, bite by bite, until the plate was empty. Not complaining about his childish antics.
"Have you tried it?" Carl asked.
"Tried what?" Ryan didn't look up.
"The cake."
