Soulsteel cuffs still cut into her wrists.
Blood soaked her boots.
Lightning painted the sky like a burning scroll.
> "Traitor!"
"Witch!"
"Monster!"
Their screams echoed behind her, but they couldn't follow where she was going.
She reached the obsidian gate — the one she'd buried years ago.
She spat blood, muttered the incantation:
> "Vox ignis orien nocturne…"
The ground cracked.
The gate glowed.
And with one last look over her shoulder, Lena stepped into the Rift.

The Rift was not a place.
It was a wound in space.
Here, gravity bent sideways.
Colors bled into sound.
Time slithered like a living thing.
Lena fell through memories that weren't hers.
She saw herself holding Aric's hand as a child.
Then strangling him.
Then building him from bones.
None of it was real.
All of it was true.
> "Stop!" she shouted. "I did what I had to!"
The Rift whispered back:

A silver platform unfolded beneath her.
On it stood a woman with no face, dressed in mirrors.
Her voice sounded like Lena's own, but older. Wiser. Colder.
> "You made a deal you didn't understand, General."
Lena snarled, "I was promised control."
> "And Vox was promised a door. You were the hinge."
Lena fell to her knees. "I didn't know it would choose him—"
> "But it did. Because he was stronger. Because he was willing."
The mirror-woman leaned down, pulling Lena's face to her own.
> "You taught him how to lie.
He taught the lie how to live."

🧊 Scene 4 — The Price
A throne of frozen starlight appeared behind the mirror-woman.
On it sat a creature made of chains and flame — the same being Lena saw in the dream years ago when she first activated the rebirth spell.
Its voice was not heard.
It was remembered.
> "You stole death from us, Lena Voss.
Now we steal your identity."
Chains lashed out.
Lena screamed as her reflection shattered — literally breaking her image apart.
Memories exploded from her body:
Her first love.
Her betrayal of Darin.
Her lie to the Council.
Her smile at Aric the day she told him, "You are meant for greatness."
All erased.
Sucked into the Rift.
Until only a shell remained.
> "What am I now?" she gasped.
The mirror-woman replied:
> "A witness."

Back at Aegis, Aric sat by the fire, notebook on his lap.
His eyes fluttered shut.
In sleep, he saw Lena—not as the general, but as a child, crying in the rain.
He reached for her.
She whispered:
> "They took everything. Even my name."
He woke, heart pounding.
Cassia stirred. "Another dream?"
He shook his head. "Not mine.
Hers."

but watching.
