Chapter 17 - V2 Prologue: Ash and Memory

PROLOGUE – ASH AND MEMORY

Ash choked the wind.

It drifted in heavy coils across the ridge where the war had ended, settling into the broken earth like the breath of something that should've died—but didn't.

Kael Sorrén sat slumped upon the ash-born throne.

His arms hung at his sides, claws retracting slowly back into skin. Blood soaked his ribs. The black ichor of hybrids stained his neck. His breath was ragged, but steady. Above him, the skies no longer screamed. They whispered.

The silence was unbearable.

[Codex Status: Ascension Confirmed. Echo Host: Kael Sorrén.]

[New Title Registered: Ash-Crowned King.]

He didn't react. Didn't blink. Didn't move.

Across the shattered field, fires still burned. The corpses of Siegeborns and Carrionlords twisted in cooling heaps. In the near distance, Vyrmclaw lay half-buried beneath rubble, one eye open, chest rising with effort. Alive. But only barely.

Kael looked down at his own hands.

They trembled.

He whispered, "Why am I still here?"

No one answered.

Except the Codex.

[Echo Stability: 61%. Hybrid Override remains active.]

[XENOVORAX: Dormant. Monitoring.]

His head tilted back slightly. The ash crown—half bone, half neural stem—had fused into the back of his skull, pulsing faintly with Codex light. He could feel it now. Not like a reward. More like a parasite learning its host.

He wanted to rip it off.

Instead, he sat still and let the cold take him.

Footsteps echoed in the distance. Small ones.

Not hybrid. Human.

He didn't rise. Couldn't.

Then a voice—young, unsure, female.

"…He's really alive."

Kael slowly lifted his head.

Out from behind a jagged wall came a girl in a torn biosuit. She held a long rifle and kept her distance, eyes wide with recognition—and fear.

"You don't… you don't look like a king," she said, voice shaking.

Kael blinked. "Good. Kings start wars."

She hesitated. "You already did."

He couldn't argue. He looked at the battlefield, the bodies, the throne. Ravager's name burned behind his teeth.

He closed his eyes. "I didn't start it. I ended it. Badly."

She took a cautious step forward. "Is it true? You merged with a Class-S hybrid? That you—"

"I didn't ask for it," he cut in.

Silence again.

Then the Codex pulsed within his mind.

[Global Codex Network: Tier Shift Confirmed. Warning—Multiple Echo Hosts Tracking Your Signal.]

Kael felt it then. Pressure in the distance. Eyes—too many, too far. From mountaintops. From labs. From orbit.

Varen. Samael. Ixchel. Ghosts rising.

The girl watched him, stunned. "You felt that too, didn't you?"

He slowly nodded. "Yeah. We all felt it."

She stared. "What does it mean?"

Kael stood with effort. He staggered but didn't fall. The ash crown crackled as he rose.

"It means I just became the storm they've all been training for."

As Kael turned, the wind shifted.

Across the charred ridge, something in the Codex stirred. A new protocol. A sublayer of data not accessed before.

He reached inward. And ARKHIVE answered.

[Initializing Volume: After Man — Volume 2: The Sovereign Reign.]

Kael's brow furrowed.

"Sovereign," he muttered. "Not earned. Just… inherited."

The Codex pulsed again—almost like it disagreed.

He looked down at the corpses, at the scorched throne behind him.

Then up at the storm-wracked sky.

"I didn't ask to reign," Kael whispered, voice low. "But maybe that's why I have to."

He stepped forward, boots crunching over bones and ash.

Toward war.

Toward vengeance.

Toward the Sovereign Reign.
