Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: An Amazing Quirk

"Konata, please come up and answer this question."

The gorilla-like teacher at the podium could no longer ignore the drowsy girl with the ahoge sitting in the back row, her head bobbing rhythmically as she nearly dozed off on the desk.

"Huh...?"

Blinking in confusion, the sleep-deprived girl raised her head sluggishly, her mind still foggy from last night's poor rest.

Did someone just call me? What for... Oh right, I think I was supposed to answer a question. Wait, I'm in class right now...

Groggily standing up, Konata struggled to pull herself together as she shuffled toward the podium.

Math problems? So this is math class? Math can't possibly stump me -after all, I was a college student in my past life...

With this thought, Konata finally wobbled her way to the front. Her unsteady gait had the entire class holding their breath, certain she might faceplant at any moment.

Hmm... This won't do. I really need to make a detailed schedule. Right after school, I have to rush to the maid café...

Severely sleep-deprived, she moved through a mental fog so thick she barely registered her own actions.

Under the watchful eyes of her classmates, Konata picked up two pieces of chalk and began writing simultaneously on the blackboard. The gorilla-like teacher had only meant to call on her for one problem, but as he watched her effortlessly solve his carefully crafted questions while multitasking, he froze in place.

Correct, correct, all correct!!

Never mind the difficulty of writing different content with both hands-she was solving them with her eyes half-closed or even completely shut! Even if you're going to disrespect your teacher, there should be limits, damn it!!

The gorilla teacher roared internally.

In less than five minutes, when Konata tossed the chalk stubs back onto the tray, the classroom erupted into thunderous applause.

"Huh...?"

Startled awake by the noise, Konata looked utterly bewildered.

It was just a few problems-was all this fanfare really necessary? They weren't even that hard...

"...Well done, Konata. You may return to your seat. And please try not to sleep during class."

The gorilla-like teacher, completely at a loss for excuses, struggled to force out a sentence.

"Oh..."

Konata, utterly clueless about what had just happened, returned to her seat with a head full of confusion.

Seriously, can someone please tell me what just happened? Why is everyone looking at me with such admiration...

"Konata, you're amazing."

Just as she sat down, the girl in front of her turned around and spoke.

The girl had long green hair tied into a large bow at the back, with big, round eyes that somehow gave off a vacant, lifeless impression.

Tsuyu Asui, a classmate who sat in front of her. Her Quirk was "Frog," a heteromorphic-type ability, though her appearance remained almost entirely human, unlike another classmate, Setsuna Tokage, whose entire face was that of a snake-a stark contrast in heteromorphic traits.

In fact, because of this, Konata had once suspected Tsuyu's ability might actually be time manipulation...

Honestly, when she first arrived in this world, Konata had been thoroughly startled by all the bizarre-looking people. Setsuna Tokage, for instance, had a full-on snake face-and snakes, being cold-blooded creatures, were one of her greatest fears. The first time she saw Setsuna, she nearly had a heart attack.

But humans are adaptable creatures. Now, she could face anything with a straight face... including the irritable gorilla at the lectern.

"Uh, so... could you explain why everyone was clapping earlier?"

Pointing cautiously to the side, Konata asked Tsuyu.

"It was just solving a few-"

Before she could finish, Tsuyu's frog-like tongue suddenly shot out, snatching a piece of chalk mid-air. Immediately after, the gorilla teacher's voice boomed from the front.

"Tsuyu, Konata, no talking during class."

After shooting Konata an apologetic glance, Tsuyu turned back around.

"Seriously... it's just a gorilla..."

Propping her head up with one hand, Konata muttered under her breath before comfortably closing her eyes. Once drowsiness hit, there was no fighting it...

"NO SLEEPING IN CLASS EITHER!!!"

A roar erupted from the lectern.

"Ambidextrous? So that's why."

After class, upon hearing Tsuyu's explanation, Konata nodded in understanding.

"It's really not that impressive. I can use both hands equally well-guess I'm ambidextrous. Since most people are right-handed, I usually just stick to my right hand."

"But that's still amazing."

Tsuyu looked at her with admiration.

"If only I could multitask like you, Konata. Taking care of my younger siblings would be so much easier."

"Taking care of younger siblings... So that's why you rush home right after school every day?"

Recalling how Frog Girl Tsuyu, much like herself, never made any friends in class due to immediately leaving school after dismissal, Konata easily deduced the reason behind Tsuyu's early departures.

"A nuisance!"

Seemingly surprised that someone had guessed her situation, Tsuyu appeared delighted.

"It's not just that-I'm also preparing for U.A.'s entrance exam. I want to become a hero in the future. Let's work hard together, Konata-chan!"

"U.A. again..."

Konata's lips twitched involuntarily at Tsuyu's words.

U.A. High... Why did she have this nagging feeling Tsuyu would definitely get accepted?

Silently, she queried her system: "System, is Tsuyu Asui this world's female protagonist?"

"Is Tsuyu Asui at least an important character?"

Konata stubbornly rephrased her question.
