Chapter 7 - Chapter 6

Chapter 6: "Burnt Marshmallows & Broken Dreams"

The chaos left smoldering in the city behind them, Cainen and Kaito take refuge deep in the woods, far from sirens, gunfire, and government dogs. The trees are quiet — too quiet — like even nature's holding its breath, watching these two freaks of war settle into a moment of peace.

The campfire crackles between them, smoke curling into the night sky like lazy ghosts. Kaito's chewing on a half-burnt marshmallow, eyes half-lidded like he's bored but too tired to complain. Cainen's poking at the fire with a stick like he's trying to beat it into telling him the future.

Cainen: "You ever think about how this whole world's basically one big trash can, and we're the leftover meat?"

Kaito: (snorts) "Nah. I think we're the rats fighting over it. You just bite harder than most."

They both laugh — low, tired, but real. Like for a second, they're not fugitives or monsters or soldiers in a war nobody declared out loud.

Kaito tosses another marshmallow into the flames like a ritual sacrifice.

"So when's the rest of the 'Deadly Six' showing up? Or is it just us two dumbasses forever?"

Cainen leans back, arms behind his head, watching the stars like he plans to punch one.

"They'll come. I'm not building a gang. I'm building a district. Kingdoms need legends. This is just Chapter One."

Kaito stares at him for a second, then grins.

"Damn. You talk like you already got statues of yourself in your brain."

Cainen: "I do. One of me kicking your lazy ass."

Kaito laughs so hard he chokes on the last marshmallow. Cainen just grunts and smirks — the most relaxed he's looked since the first siren screamed his name.

The fire crackles.

The stars watch.

Two threats to the world — just kids at a campfire, sharing jokes like they didn't almost die yesterday… and might again tomorrow.
