Chapter 3 - chapter 3

The library's interior isn't much better. Gray walls, gray flooring, and even gray plastic tables contributed to the bleakness of the environment. It wasn't the most exciting location to study, but it was the only option Jessica had.

Jessica passed the same librarian every morning since entering college as she walked into the library. After going past her every day for the past three years, you'd think she'd give Jessica a smile, but she does what she usually does and ignores her. Jessica walks up to her favorite study desk and notices Sarah Turner out of the corner of her eye.

Sarah is one of those teenagers who never matured after graduating from high school. Sarah viewed the world as a popularity battle, and she felt it was her heavenly mission to patrol the college grounds, pointing out every student's fashion faux pas to her selected disciples.

Jessica avoided her like the bubonic plague... but she was difficult to avoid like the bubonic plague. Jessica kept her eyes locked to the ground as she rushed by her, but Sarah noticed her.

"Come here, Madison!" Sarah screamed.

Sarah had the practice of addressing individuals by their last name. She believes that addressing them by their first names risks humanizing them. As a result, she avoided surnames or labels like 'goth' or 'nerd.' Jessica was invisible in her social circle - at least until she needed something.

"Hello, Sarah," Jessica says, her voice brimming with excitement.

Sarah swept her beautiful blonde hair over her shoulder and snipped it short. "I'd want to borrow some of your notes. I haven't done the pointless reading, and I'm too hungover to even try." Jessica lied, saying, "I haven't written any notes yet I came up here to write them right now."

This seemed like a foolproof strategy to Jessica, but Laura had other ideas. With a smile on her face, Sarah hooked her arm around Jessica's and said, "Oh, that's fantastic; we can work together on this! We can be study buddies, if you will."

No way, no how! Jessica thought

Jessica tried to break away, but Sarah felt her fear and tightened her grasp on her arm. "Well that is going to be so much fun," Sarah chirped, and began dragging her toward her table like a predator taking its victim back to its cave.

Jessica finally gave in and followed her.

Because Sarah rarely studied alone, it was simple to identify where she was seated. Her Eleven closest followers accompanied her everywhere she went. These fans fluctuated from week to week, but they were all easily identifiable by their caked-on make-up, long manicured nails, artificial extensions, and fancy clothing. They were dubbed the "life Barbie" dolls by her.

They glanced at her cruelly as they reached their table. Sarah was keen to explain why Jessica was there. ' "Her name is Jess, and she'll be assisting me with my seminar work."

The Barbies nodded in agreement and greeted Jessica with phony grins at their table. Jessica took a seat among them, nervously. It felt like being a foreigner with a day pass into a hostile nation.

"So Jess, do you have any Halloween plans for tonight?" said one of them, attempting to strike up a discussion.
