The word hung in the air like a curse. There was a pounding in my ears, and my fork slipped from my fingers, clattering onto my plate.
How dare he? I seethed, swelling with rage.
Pasting a fake smile on my face was the only way to get through dinner fast.
It was only the thought of my mother's disappointed face that kept me at the table, nodding and smiling, pretending to enjoy the small talk. If she ever found out that I lost control at dinner, I would be in trouble.

I suddenly imagined wrapping my hands around her neck and smashing her head into the wall.
