After the call connected, Dr. Coleman didn't waste time on pleasantries. He immediately got to the point, knowing full well that Monarch's philosophy had long conflicted with that of S.H.I.E.L.D.
For example, when a monster like Godzilla appeared, S.H.I.E.L.D. would usually want to eliminate it, while Monarch would aim to capture and study it. But because S.H.I.E.L.D. had greater favor with the World Security Council—and far superior resources in terms of reputation, funding, and political backing—Coleman normally wouldn't bother calling Nick Fury.
But Godzilla was too important to them.
With no other choice, Coleman made the call.
"How can you even think about keeping that creature from us?" Coleman said through gritted teeth, already mentally preparing to bleed for this request.
"No."
Fury's refusal came swiftly and without hesitation.
"Why don't you just hand it over so we can study it properly? We need to learn where these monsters come from, what their genetic makeup is, and how to counter them. I promise—we'll share the research results."
"My Avengers already did a great job handling it," Fury replied coldly. "And frankly, I don't think giving that creature to your team is a good idea. Don't think I don't know about the egg you're hiding in Janjira. My advice? Just tell me the truth—this kind of monster is beyond anyone's control. Let's hope it doesn't become a problem, or we'll be the ones cleaning up your mess again."
While speaking, Fury glanced at the satellite feed of Godzilla, then picked up a file from his desk and continued his conversation. After the Tesseract incident, Fury had learned that some forces were better left untouched—hence why he let Thor take the Tesseract away. Now, he was firmly rejecting Monarch's request to jointly study Godzilla.
If Coleman were in the room, he would've immediately recognized the photo inside that file: the giant monster egg discovered in Janjira.
Hearing this, Coleman froze for a moment. He hadn't expected Fury to already know about the egg, despite all their efforts at secrecy.
Realizing the game was over, Coleman ended the call without another word. Monarch already had the monster egg. Fighting S.H.I.E.L.D. for custody of Godzilla now would be overreaching.
With a heavy sigh, Coleman turned to his assistant.
"Get in touch with Serizawa. Tell him to return to Janjira. This new creature… it may really be Godzilla, but we've lost our shot."
"Understood."
Once the assistant left, Coleman looked at the screen in front of him, where Godzilla—defeated by Superman—lay unconscious. He muttered under his breath:
"Let's just hope they don't figure anything out… and come crawling back to us for help."
Tokyo Bay
Although Godzilla appeared completely subdued, Clark remained on-site, waiting for Nick Fury's arrangements. After all, Clark had nowhere suitable to keep such a massive creature.
And more importantly, he was waiting for Diana to return. Before fighting Godzilla, Clark had left her to the side. Even though he knew Diana might not be able to handle a creature of this scale, he had no intention of letting her join the battle. After all, beautiful women had privileges.
While Clark was fighting, Diana had been helping civilians affected by the battle. When she saw the fight unfold, she made her way over.
"Is this another alien invasion?" she asked, staring at the monster—which didn't look like any Earth species she'd seen. Having just experienced the New York invasion, her mind went straight to aliens.
"I'm not sure," Clark replied, still looking at the unconscious creature lying before him like a mountain. Given that this type of creature had never appeared in the Marvel Universe, Clark couldn't rule out that this might be some butterfly effect of his own arrival.
What Clark didn't know was that Godzilla actually did exist in the Marvel Universe, although due to licensing issues, it was renamed Leviathan in the comics.
Soon after Clark and Diana reunited, Nick Fury called.
"I found a place for your pet," Fury said. "Remember that lake you created in New Mexico?"
Fury was referring to the "New Mexico Lake," a massive crater Clark had created while showing off his power—an explosion from his solar flare left a 10-kilometer-wide, 3-kilometer-deep lake where a highway used to be.
Clark now realized that location might be perfect: remote, vast, and uninhabited. The only issue was: what does Godzilla even eat? A creature that big probably had an insane appetite.
"Yeah, the place that used to be a road but is now a lake. Hardly anyone goes there anymore. I'll have our people set up a perimeter with warning signs. Your little pet can live there in peace."
"But one condition," Fury added. "You're responsible for its food and making sure it doesn't escape."
Fury wasn't thrilled about Clark wanting to keep the monster. From his perspective, dismembering it would've been far safer—no risk, and they'd gain valuable biological material to study.
He was especially curious about how the creature evolved so rapidly—its size had doubled in no time. Where did it get that energy? Cutting it open might yield some answers.
Still, Fury knew his limits. If Clark wanted it as a pet, S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn't be able to stop him. So instead, he gave Clark some friendly reminders: you own it—you're responsible for it.
"Don't worry. I won't let it escape," Clark promised. He had just secured a home for his new pet, after all.
But deep down, Clark was already imagining the day he could take Godzilla out for a walk.
"Alright," Fury sighed. "I'll send someone over to help transport it."
"No need," Clark replied with a grin. "I've got an idea."
